  • Their trade-mark 4-part harmony - hard to beat, then or now.

  • This TV show segment is a great little time capsule. The dancers in the bathtubs are wild (and very 60s). But I wonder if there is an upload of this anywhere on YT where this can be heard right to the final note?

  • I was 9 years old when this was made. Yikes. Good tune.

  • Excellent... There is nothing like them today.

  • Love this band so much. (: That one go-go dancer, Crackhead McGee, looked like she was having a seizure. I was afraid she was gonna fall outta the tub.

  • I like how at some parts of the video Denny tries to imitate the dancers and then gets timid.. and then later Mitchy looks like she is mocking them.. it's all in fun.

  • buena cancion!!!!

  • i bet hoes from rap videos now a days cant dance as good as these girls in the bath tubes

  • Много раз слышал эту песню. Очень красивая. Только теперь узнал, что её поют такие смешные чуваки.

В ванне танцевать, наверное, не удобно...

Many times heard this song. Very beautiful. Only now has learned that it is sung by such ridiculous dudes.

In a bath to dance, probably, not conveniently...

  • @camebyjust Не говори ерунды, нормальные люди и хорошие музыканты, может и не вписываются в твоё представление о хороших людей, но они оставили свой след в истории и их песни слушают до сих пор, чем можешь похвастаться ты?

Bullshit. They are nice people and good musicians, maybe they cannot fit into your idea of "normal" people, but they have left their mark in history, and what do you have?

  • Pretty sure that's Gary Lewis doing the intro

  • I also need a towel after listening to that...

  • Fake vocals were even cool...what a nice time.

  • this is music the way it should be

  • Ahhh Denny :D

  • Man those were the coolest time ever. Even the Lip Synching wasnt so bad. Hullabaloo and thee guys and girls doing the JERK, AND THE MONKEY. To Cool.

  • Boy they sure had weird dance moves back in the 60s...

Course they'd probably think all our bumping and grinding is weird as fuck too if they traveled in time to see the clubs of today.

  • Alto flute solo by Bud Shank (1926-2009)

  • Are those the same bathtubs being used in Cealis commercials?

  • OmgI use to have white gogo boots as a tiny child, love the sixties!

  • Those guys who came out of tubs these scared me LOL...I love the 50's and 60's haah..but specially The Mamas & The Papas!!

  • Excellent.

  • At the time, this was America's answer to the British Invasion (Beatles, Stones...). Monster hit. Still being covered.

  • One of the best rock solos EVER, that doesn't use an electric guitar.

  • The album cover had them posing in a bathtub with a billboard covering the toilet with the titles of the 2 hits that were released from this album, this track and "Monday, Monday"

  • The album cover had Ms&Ps in the bathtub and on some issues of the album, the toilet cover was covered up with a billboard of the 2 main hits, "Monday, Monday" and this track

  • mama cass is so cool.

  • I like the speedy gogos !!!

  • Amazing melody. Found cool Mama's and Papa's stuff on a hysterical website called noveltyjoes. Check it out if you want to crack up.

  • Denny was a sweet, hot babe. ;< P

  • Michelle was a sweet, hot babe.

What's with the go-go dancers in the bathtubs?

  • @searcherboy

You're right Michelle was really beautiful.

The go-go dancers??? No, they are not really hot/.

  • @searcherboy She's still hot!! but then again I'm ol

  • @searcherboy It was a play on their first album cover. It's kinda funny to think that a picture of a band sitting in a bathtub was really a WEIRD thing back then, but you didn't put something as un-kosher as a bathtub or a toilet on the cover of a pop record back then. With that being said, it's quite a groundbreaking album cover.

  • why can't this generation have the same style and freshness as back then; the things that are cool,,,like the "Ugg" boots for girls...seem to be borrowed from back then

  • I love Ellen Cass Elliot. After Mamas and the Papas she had a great solo career.

  • Per Michelle, they often sang into live mikes over the tracks to the song. You can here it on this video. So, it's a combination of live and using a tape of the song. On other parts of this episode of Hullabaloo, they are singing live without any backing tracks, and it's gorgeous.

  • The bathtub dancers were probably on LSD...Allong with many others at the time !

  • the single greatest tune ever, right ml?

  • One great talent (Gary Lewis) introducing 4 great talents. It's all good.

  • this is lypsnced and not live at all, the only live thing is thier movements

  • shame its mimed

  • Check me out YouTubeLand,I was 2 days old March 14th 1966,anybody else have good music when they were born. This will take some beating!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just looked on Wikipedia. They are died relatively young. Looks like Michelle Phillips didn't party as much!

  • This is timeless. Best listened to whilst out driving!

  • I'm a huge metal fan, but I Love The Mamas and The Papas. There sound is awesome. Mama Cass was a True Talent.

  • sweet!! yaaaa!!

  • I get chills when I watch this. Chicks (and amps) 'shaggin' in tubs, the haircuts and clothing, and the whole vibe. Magic.

  • One person likes ham sandwiches...

  • Some of the stage design in those days was bizarre.

  • Not even HE had the cover with the toilet!

  • @coolsweetgroovy--Do you really believe Mackenzie? She has been on drugs since 14 and probably has had so much therapy she may be having false memories.Conveniently, these accusations were never made while John was alive!

  • I dig the gotee. I don't see too many of those in old-school videos like these. And of course the girl looks good. She's got a pair of eyes.

  • Thanks for uploading. Great that you got the entire performance. Such a shame YouTube went corporate - just don't need the Ads man . .

  • has anyone else watched this on magic mushrooms lmfao!!

  • 1:25 It´s thiller!!!!!

  • Thumbs Up if you think John Phillips lookslike a Pedophile so sad what he did to Mackenzie and Michelle didn't even know because he lied to her about being a loving man

  • this video is why they say white people can't dance.

  • DESPITE THIS SONG BEING ONE OF THEIR BEST (COMPARED TO SONGS LIKE "MONDAY MONDAY")WASNT AS SUCCESSFUL AS THE OTHERS (CHART WISE) IS QUITE A SAD SONG (DONT KNOW IT WAS WRITTEN BY ONEOF THE BAND MEMBERS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ABOUT HOME SICKNESS WISHING THEY WERE BACK IN CALIFORNIA ENJOYING THE SUN) DOES ANYONE KNOW THAT JOHN PHILLIPS FROM THE BAND WAS COMPOSER OF THE sCOTT MACKEZIE CLAASIC "SAN FRANCISCO - WEAR FLOWERS IN THEIR HAIR.

  • love this jam........damn why wasnt i born in the 60's :( i would of been a hippie........

  • Pay attention how all dancers REALLY follow the music, especialy at flute time!!!lolll

  • what about the satan church

  • why r there ladies dancing in bathtubs?

  • Michelle Phillips sure was a hottie back then. This is relaxing music.

  • I must admit, I find the backup dancers to be funny. Is this when the idea of "backup dancers" began? I thought they originated in the 80's.

  • I should it been born 15 years before this song, to be able to enjoy it as a teenager, not been born 15 years after this song :(.

  • she's hot as hell

  • it sounds just like the recorded song.......

anyway, its STILL an amazing song!

  • Телочка слева, которая высокая - прикольненькая такая, современная. А песня конечно же супер хит 20 века.

  • 1:40 the singer fall in love of the blonde dancer

  • I love that song but am I the only one weirded out by the fact that that guy raped his daughter and had an incestous relationship with her for years? and michelle phillips and mama cass and everyone knew about it? he certainly looks like a pedophile. It kinda ruined the whole band for me.

  • @LaSerpentaCanta have to agree. he looks like a wimpy pedophile. didnt know everyone knew though. all i know is it was a different era. love the song though.

  • @LaSerpentaCanta The incestuous relationship did not happen until Mackenzie was an adult. Mama Cass had already passed on. No one probably knew about it, except John and Mackenzie. I do get weirded out watching him, knowing his transgression. But the song is cool.

  • @strawberryseason If I recall correctly, according to Mackenzie the relationship began when she was still a teenager, and I'm sure everyone else knew about it which is despicable.

  • @LaSerpentaCanta Mackenzie does an interview with Larry King, available here on youtube, where she said it happened for the first time when she was 19. Then not again until 3 or 4 years later when they were out on tour together. I get the impression that she didn't talk to people about it until some years later.

  • @strawberryseason I jus checked and it's true but he also gave her cocaine when she was 11 and did drugs with her since she was a child, I mean the guy was a creep, a rapist and a pedophile. Who knows what other girls he raped or coerced into sex.

  • @LaSerpentaCanta I don't know if he was a pedophile (someone attracted to young children), but he certainly was abusive and he harmed MacKenzie. She calls what he did "rape,"; when it happened at first, she did not consent. He was a messed up person, which makes it hard to watch him on these videos without thinking of what he did.

  • lOVE THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS CALIFORNIA DREAMIN

  • @kerryk44

  • Where did these fu@#ing dancers appear from??? At least they could have at least tried to dance in time to the music.

  • So great that I can't imagine!

  • super

  • i like the song very much. i think they dont sing live here

  • introduced by Gary Lewis!

  • Вечная тема!!!

  • mueranse hipies hijos de la gran puta

  • they did not sing on the ed sullivan show watch denny's lips to the music it was all lip synced. if you want to see and hear them live watch the monterey pop festival movie. Many groups were forced to do this. Pissed the jefferson airplane off when they had they had to lip sync.

  • they did not sing on the ed sullivan show watch denny's lips to the music it was all lip synced. if you want to see and hear them live watch the monterey pop festival movie.

  • if what mckinzie says is true, pappa is a very baaaaaad dad.toooooooo bad.such good music

  • I think Michele Phillips looks stunning in this video

  • @612Crewz Michele Phillips looks stunning in every video

  • cass - best female s voice ever

denny - best male s voice and the cutest guy ever

michelle - like guys say one of the most beautiful women ever

    john - best songwriter ever

  • Music from back were very real touching, & meaningful! God I wish I was living during that time!

  • God I love music from back in the day! Some of the music out now is nothing but crap. Some of the lyrics to some of the songs today alwalys talk about money cars, & women degrading themselves by shaking their a****! I love this song and this band to death! God Bless'em!

  • I find this video somehow disturbing.

Shouldn't the bath tub dancers have been naked?

  • i want the notes for the flute solo, if not, i will have to learn it by ear :(

  • @Luckyesmiperro I think it's pretty easy to hear it all by ear, come on, if you're a good musician it would be pretty shame to ask notes for flute part...

  • @christopher60s

lol soo true but im kind of lazy, but i got a part of it in 30 minutes, soo yeah, i guess it will be an easy one

  • @christopher60s wow seriously? why so hostile? not everyone can learn by ear. Luckyesmiperro could still be a great musician if he/she cant learn by ear. Just him/her u dont have the flute notes, dont say its a shame...

  • @christopher60s Must I remind that just because you are a good musician doesn't mean that you can pick up on correct notes to play by someone else playing it. I've played clarinet for 7 years, piano for 6 and sang for over 10, and I still prefer sheet music. And frankly, getting sheet music saves a lot of time.

  • @christopher60s LMAO!!!

  • @Luckyesmiperro Stick with playing the skin flute.

  • @Luckyesmiperro

Try Guitar Pro software, there is a complete TAB for this song, drums, bass, even flute... ;)

  • so where are the drums and flute players??? lypsinc where's the amp?

  • @lova41 I told a lot of times, that instrumental is not live, of cause. They are just singing live on the instrumental track, like they did on Sullivan show etc...

  • @christopher60s The Beatles did it also

  • @lova41 The amp is in the tub. lol

  • so where are the drums and flute players??? lypsinc

  • Very nice....Wasn't expecting the bathtub dancers though! I think a lot of groups lip-synched, and their amps were turned off, during this era, especially on TV show appearances....I noticed that with the Who performance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour....The acoustics and technology weren't all that great

  • I won't get in on the "Live/Not Live" argument but few of these Hullabaloo or Shindig performances were live. Note the Gibson ES-335 guitar isn't even hooked to an amp.

  • @KC5E Yes, i've seen that John's guitar is not hooked to any amp... that's weird, seems that they're singing live only on backing track :)

  • @christopher60s It doesn't seem like they're singing live, thats a lipsync. They may be singing, but what we're hearing is a recorded track.

  • @christopher60s California dreaming on Hullaballoo is total lip sync. Not singing to a track.

  • @christopher60s they were lip singing its obvious. still great though.

  • Gary Lewis is a NATURAL BORN entertainer....he doesn't even have to work at it! Must be in the genes.....

  • Nice mustache child diddler.

  • Michelle is soooooo nice. Could there be anyone more beautiful?

  • @viderbabi

BEACH BOY LEADER,BRIAN WILSON was "gun downed" for Michelle and WROTE

    "CALIFORNIA GIRLS" as a tribute

  • Denny & John <333

  • I just caught this! About midway through the video (1:20) watch Denny. He's checking out the girl dancers from behind. He even jesters to John & makes some kind of comment. Funny!

  • I love the song!! The dancers can just make you crack up at their expressions and movements! lol

  • Oh my... Michelle was so damn HOT!

To those who say that's a lip-sync - you are WRONG. Listen to it once again...

  • Love this song! And I live in Denny Dohertys homeland! He came from Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is only an hour and a half from where I live.

  • All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray. Who doesn't know this song?

  • Now it is all of the USA: they are dreaming, while the Ismlamo-Faschism is crowling all over us.

Thank you Obama. You will be remembered as a great leader, because the History will be written by Muslim World Dictatorship.

  • They are still good to this day. This is timeless music. Our great grand children will enjoy it too.

  • wot a class song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's funny how everything from the 60's looks and sounds ridiculous except for the music which is immortal.

  • Look at all those chicks jumping out of the bathtubs,,,,,,,that surely makes it outdated.....but not the tune! Great tune!

  • it is lip syncing but they are singing over the track at times

  • This IS live!! Its sooo much different than the real track.

  • omg!!! love Michelle Phillips T.T :D T.T

  • *-*

  • The pop-up bathtub dancers...tremendously tacky.

  • 60's dancing is something to remember :D

  • I may be a guy but whenever I'm on stage singing people always ask me where I learned to move my feet the way I do. I tell them to watch Mama Cass!

  • @estupido7490 you Go

  • epic song

  • I wonder what dance were they doing?

  • The Frug.!!!

  • I was born in LA; I've lived in many different places, but it sure is nice to be here in LA

  • i love mama cass dancing

  • Yea exactly who cares if it was live or not, the song still kicks ass, and the babes were hot!

  • Úplne fantastična pieseň, prekrásna melódia, hlasy...

  • love the 60/s dancin

  • Denny's so cute!!!

  • excellent!!! Two thumbs up!

  • OMG..brings back a lotsa memories.

    thanks4upload.

  • WHO CARES if it's live or not?????!!!!! Geez, less filling-tastes great, less filling-tastes great!!!!!!

  • One final comment to the dummy who insists this is live...did you ever bother to notice the mics are props? Uh...you know...no CORDS?????? Duh!!!!

  • Anyone with an OUNCE of observatory ability need only watch their mouths and LISTEN to see that are lipsynching which was the way most pop groups handled live performances of this kind. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to duplicate the song exactly, but yet here you are, listening to the exact song. Some people WANT to be lieve this is live, go on then...but it is a STUPID way NOT to think...

  • This was NOT live. Play this along with the CD track and it is EXACTLY the same.

  • No you're really unright. You can exactely hear that it's live, you can hear phrase "California Dreamin on such a winter's day" sang with a different power, than in track, and Cass sings louder phrase "winter's day". It's absolutely live.

  • No I AM right. Use your brain and LISTEN to this track along with the album track. THEN, go read about how such shows were done. THEN, go read about how M&Ps often sang live along with the records...

  • LOL Hullabaloo does not allow live performances, its lip synced to insure no "out bursts" from the performers. Just look they are not singing in the mics, the guitar is not plugged in. If you want to see this song done live search California Dreaming Monterey Pop Festival! Now thats live! its a concert, oh yeah and 90% of all TV performances are lip synced, pre recorded, or done with a combo of the two ;)

  • @christopher60s This is live

  • @christopher60sI know exactly what you mean. I listened to a performance of Jefferson Airplane which was the same situation, the sound is like perfect, almost too perfect to be live, but still if you know the songs well you´ll hear small differences. I reckon either bands had this policy those days that they shouldn´t add anything when they enter the studio (much like bob dylan) in their songs, OR it is simply playback on some instruments and vocals on the song while they sing along in a mic

  • i would like to have kissed john at that time i was just a kid

  • he looks like he's jacking off at 1:17 ;)

    if the guitar wasn't there

  • haha, ur right

  • Boy this song brings back memories of happy days! Thanks for posting.

  • Maravilhoso!!!!

  • run forest ruuuuuuuuun

  • Seems to be lip-sync....but,still valuable...

  • Are you kiding? Can't you hear that it's live performance? Cass sounds little bit different while singing "And The Sky Is Grey". It was all live.

  • that dancing still makes me laugh
