Ben Gibbard uses his voice almost as if it were an extra instrument, hitting different notes and different tones/pitches with each word, so I think that in this specific example Pete made the right choice and sang it as close to Gibbard as possible, but I agree that people need to understand what a cover is, and that they need to sing it their own way.
