@fucut00b Everyone doesn't use a green screen. Typically for video one uses a green or blue screen because software for video has the functionality to remove that color for an Alpha (transparency) channel. Alot of our clients do take the photos into video---but if you don't have that software then this is one way to extract in Photoshop. Typically, for just photo's we shoot on a white background and then the process is simpler in my opinion.
These techniques really aren't designed for greenscreen removal. Extract and Eraser tools just don't work professionally. The true way to do it is in the channels. You can see how it works at photoshop-illustration(dot)blogspot(dot)com. The tools you mention are for more complex backgrounds, but greenscreen is used precisely because of how it works with the channels. That's what the pros use.
@wazupsam Totally agree about low res images, not much of anything works as well on a low res compared to a high res....that's why you should always edit on a copy of the high res and than downsample if needed.
your tutorial was really beneficial for me and for others i truly respect the work you did howover though....arm I don't know why alot pros do this but is this a beginners tutorial or a pro tutorial the background should be a bit more challenging...i mean its not all person will be able to take pictures in white backgrounds or one color background...most of them are looking for tutorial that would cut multi-color backgrounds...i think you should make a vid on how to extract hair..just a suggest
@novado32 The best advice I can give is that if you KNOW you are going to extract, then put your subject in front of a background that is simple and provides a clear difference between the hair color/ and the background color...otherwise extracting will become a very long process because you'll have to zoom way in and hand paint the mask...in other words, you will be drawing the wisps in. There is no magic to get a brown haired girl out of a similarly colored patterned or textured background.
CS3was quirky with its workspaces-- sometimes it hides menu items, make sure when you click a top menu to look for an item in the drop down list that says "Show All Menu Items"and then look
A white background is much easier, as you don't have to compensate the edges of the subject for color contamination, as u do wth the green. I have more recent ones on extractions in CS5, but currently my hands are full with helping one of my daughters out with her new born twins..and i'm out of town, to boot. But remind me again sometime in June 2011, when I'll be back home .
Are you back? I'm waiting to learn out to do an extraction with a white background. I'd like to do a silhouette, but my subject has white/blond hair and is in front of a white wall.
This is easy the best tutorial on how to do this I can find, great job! But I was wondering, a lot of people shoot on a white background, could you maybe do a tutorial on how to do this on a white background? Cause making a mask and selecting is a bit more difficult if you have a white background and some highlights on the face!
No need to get condescending justinz36! Color Range is another menu command I show how to use in OTHER tutorials. I am trying to give the community a basic "tour" of the features and functions of Photoshop, as there are many!
Looked a few tutorials about how to do this and this one is by far the best! It is time-consuming but the results are worth it. Thx so much. @shinkosai While that works in some instances it doesn't in others. Objective is to acquaint folks with several of the tools in Photoshop. Using just the Green Channel in this instance only partially masks what needs to be masked plus because of the overspill of green contaminating the edges, it really is not the best choice for this image.
@photoshopmama makes sense I guess like most things in photoshop there's normally more then one way to do something, I hope they make a masking version of this tool that would be awesome. I've used photoshop a while now but this is my first time looking up this subject, thanks for the prompt reply :)
@shinkosai Actually, CS5 has beefed up its Refine Mask, Mask Edge dialog box to include different views plus a "Smart Radius" Tool for Edge detection. It's pretty good, but one still has to know some basic techniques (old school) for refining the edges of the subject and be able to isolate just certain areas for the refinements, as not all edges are or should be hard or soft throughout.
@photoshopmama I actually went into Calculations and was able to use the Red and Green Channels to produce a merged partial mask, but had to do several copy/paste over that channel and fade commands using ColorBurn mode to finally get a good mask...but it certainly produced an equally good mask.
@moaawyah It is 31 minutes to TEACH someone to remove the background when someone has lots of wispy hair, which makes things tricky. I'm sure if Mama just did it on her own it would take closer to 5.

I was wondering though, how do you extract the photo and move it onto a digital back drop? I've tried and it just won't work. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
you rock mama! Only problem I had was when painting over for hair color, my image had pitch black hair. The hue would add a tint of magenta hence i went with Normal blending mode with much reduced opacity. That ended up giving a pastelly look on the edges... any suggesstions?
Depends on the color/contrast of the wallpaper vs the subject; sometimes you can get a great start on a selection viewing the Channels or using Calculations. But more than likely, you'll have to add some hands on masking to fine tune it.

Possibly one of the best hairdressing training course we've ever seen. At the price they're offering, you'll be crazy to pass this up. ToniMoretti dottttttttttttt TK
I'm a YouTube Partner, so I'm allowed to upload long videos. Also to keep the file size down, I use Camtasia Studio 6, capturing a 1280x720 area of my screen and in production after recording I save it at the same size, with 6 frames per second in the .mp4 format. Hope that helps!
Also in post production I choose a basic Express Show Template, Customizing the Video quality setting to Encoding mode: Quality 75% and Key frame every 10 seconds. For Audio I choose a Bitrate of 128 kbps.
Once you set up your Customized Flash Options, noted previously, you can save the production setting as a template, so that you can create consistent videos. I think one of the most important factors is to make the initial capture at 1280x720 to keep files size and production time down.
Even though you can capture larger sizes in the same aspect ratio, I notice a quality degredation and longer production time and higher file size when downsizing the video in production. Keeping the original capture size and output size the same is the best outcome in my observation.
Thank you thatnk you sooo much, im not using a photo on a green screen but with a black and whiteish backround, it was a bit longer todo than it was in the video but then it would be with all the diffrent shades of colour i was freaking out on how todo this ! 5*

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all this you have no idea how helpfull this is and how easy it is to understand even for me :D ~i'm not known for how smart i am~ *hugs* wish you and your loved ones all the best
Did the eraser tool automatically correct the colors, and then you went and threw it away by moving the mask back to the original image?
I don't know if it corrects colour or not, as I've never used Photoshop, but in theory it has all the information it needs to correct the color on its own.
We know the background color we're erasing, we know what colour the pixel is, we know how transparent it is, it's just a little math to find the original color:
The eraser is used only on the copy layer and only erases pixels from that layer. I think you're confusing that layer with the underlying slip layer which is only there so you can see contrast of the hair layer above it. You are NOT erasing any orange. There is no equation and no need for even knowing the color percentages. We are dealing with tolerance not opacity to control how many similar shades of green are erased.Erasing does not color correct. We use Opacity controls for blending of modes

Excellent tutorial, thank you so much for putting this up! I love your matter-of-fact style and it's great that you're showing us how to spot mistakes and tune the tools.
If you are using Adobe Phototoshop Elements, this is not for that program at all, but if it is the real Photoshop version 7, there's not too much difference and all the same tools are in that version, too!
I'm really having difficulty with this.. my background is not green, and extracting around hair is hard. How do you get the green screen to start with?
Its shot on a green seamless background, but truly using a neutral gray or white background is better. It all depends on the background. I have other tutorials with different extraction methods for different backgrounds. If it is a busy background just use the pen tool.
My picture is very similar to this.. I really want to cut her out and all her hair to place over new background, but, this method without her being on a green background is impossible.. if the background has various colours how can this be done? please help mama shan xx

how did you upload a long video (30min) with HD?
MrKaramjbara 1 year ago
I'm a YouTube Partner, so I'm allowed to upload long videos. Also to keep the file size down, I use Camtasia Studio 6, capturing a 1280x720 area of my screen and in production after recording I save it at the same size, with 6 frames per second in the .mp4 format. Hope that helps!
photoshopmama 1 year ago
Also in post production I choose a basic Express Show Template, Customizing the Video quality setting to Encoding mode: Quality 75% and Key frame every 10 seconds. For Audio I choose a Bitrate of 128 kbps.
photoshopmama 1 year ago
Once you set up your Customized Flash Options, noted previously, you can save the production setting as a template, so that you can create consistent videos. I think one of the most important factors is to make the initial capture at 1280x720 to keep files size and production time down.
photoshopmama 1 year ago
Even though you can capture larger sizes in the same aspect ratio, I notice a quality degredation and longer production time and higher file size when downsizing the video in production. Keeping the original capture size and output size the same is the best outcome in my observation.

Example:
We're erasing the color green: [0%, 100%, 0%]
The pixel we're erasing is a dirty yellow: [70%, 70%, 0%]
The thresholding function assigned an opacity of 75%.
Using the equation before, the original colour must have been [93.3%,60%,0%], which is a pretty pleasant orange.
For sanity, verify that drawing orange with an opacity of 75% over the green background results in the dirty yellow the pixel originally was.
smariot 2 years ago
Did the eraser tool automatically correct the colors, and then you went and threw it away by moving the mask back to the original image?
I don't know if it corrects colour or not, as I've never used Photoshop, but in theory it has all the information it needs to correct the color on its own.
We know the background color we're erasing, we know what colour the pixel is, we know how transparent it is, it's just a little math to find the original color:
original=(bg*opacity-bg+pixel)/opacity
smariot 2 years ago
The eraser is used only on the copy layer and only erases pixels from that layer. I think you're confusing that layer with the underlying slip layer which is only there so you can see contrast of the hair layer above it. You are NOT erasing any orange. There is no equation and no need for even knowing the color percentages. We are dealing with tolerance not opacity to control how many similar shades of green are erased.Erasing does not color correct. We use Opacity controls for blending of modes

Thanks. I don't think I'm confused, just wandering too far into theory and a little out of sight of reality.
I tried making a video to better explain what I was thinking about:
/watch?v=tY9DfXZHkn0
I wanted to post it as a video reply, but apparently I'm not allowed. All well, live and learn.

I am SO frustrated as you are doing this in CS3 and I have adobe 7. I am literally pulling my hair out!!!!!
peghearty 2 years ago
If you are using Adobe Phototoshop Elements, this is not for that program at all, but if it is the real Photoshop version 7, there's not too much difference and all the same tools are in that version, too!

very very very very nice and detailed tutorial!! :)
but waaaaaay to long. it would be great to have the different steps in different videos to be able to "jump around" easier.

Your methods are incredible and work, but I have to agree with greatbeartiling. How do you get a subject off a background with Multi-colors?
Thank you for sharing :)

I'm really having difficulty with this.. my background is not green, and extracting around hair is hard. How do you get the green screen to start with?
greatbeartiling 2 years ago
Its shot on a green seamless background, but truly using a neutral gray or white background is better. It all depends on the background. I have other tutorials with different extraction methods for different backgrounds. If it is a busy background just use the pen tool.
photoshopmama 2 years ago
My picture is very similar to this.. I really want to cut her out and all her hair to place over new background, but, this method without her being on a green background is impossible.. if the background has various colours how can this be done? please help mama shan xx

This is a great video but time is money
I have found the fastest way to remove green is use photokey 2 and then you can add backgrounds in Photoshop of PK2
the combination Rocks
