Some compare Hitler to other great man. The truth is that he wasn't as great strategist as Alexander, Napoleon, Ceaser, Pompeus, Hannibal, among many, many others. In my oppinion, german generals, such as Rommel, had much more merit than Hitler.

In a position to slaughter the entires armies of Britannia at Dunkirk but sparing them, and then nearly at the gates of Moscow a year later with 2 Soviet Armies destroyed, 20+ divisions captured and/or retreating earns Hitler the same status. He wasn't the mastermind behind it and wasn't totally responsible for Germany's defeat albeit he gets the lion's share of the blame. It's just that history before cameras and radio tended to reward "just" the figurehead for planning.

For all the examples you named I would say that the wars these people started (as far as they actually started them) were evil deeds. The balance with their good deeds is just better.

@blackjamm cont'd: Also you shouldn't forget that the people you mentioned actually won their wars. It's a tired old cliche, but therefor no less true, that history is writen by the victors. Alexander is looked upon quite differently in Iran/Persia. Also, I'm sure the Gauls would have one or two things to say about Gaius Julius Ceasar. ;-)

@blackjamm Finally, I think ranking war and genocide on a scale of evil is a bit like comparing cancer and stroke. I see what you mean when you say that genocide is different from the simple fatalities of war (in that one is deliberate murder where the other is 'collateral damage'), I just don't know if the distinction is very important.

@pmirhs Also, a lot of the people killed in WWII died in China and SE Asia by Japanese hands. The plurality were Russian, who died by Hitler's soldiers but on Stalin's orders. Hitler was not entirely responsible for everything that happened in WWII, but he was totally and utterly responsible for deliberately killing millions in a plan to exterminate undesirable, non-German elements. And that is what made him evil.

1) The essence of a war of conquest is that you go to your neighbour to tell him that, from today, he works for you and if he disagrees you will beat him, rape his wife and kill his children. Not very nice at all.

2) Even if one is not wholly and singly responsible for something one can still carry a lot of guilt. Not literally everything in WWII was Hitler's work, but starting (his) war of aggression was, and that was bad, very bad...

@blackjamm Don't get me wrong; it is probably impossible to ever brand a historical figure entirely 'good' or 'evil'.

Genghis Khan established a great and diverse and reasonably tolerant empire which knew peace and prosperity for some time. He was also the biggest killer since the Black Death.

Alexander was known as Great, not 'good' or 'perfect'; he was an inspired leader, a benevolent ruler ánd a ruthless conqueror and psychotic murderer (, not least of which, of Cleitus).

But Alexander was great. Back then, it was glorious for lots of killing to be done. Alexander wasn't a man of our time, he was a man of HIS time! Also, he admired the Persians and the Indians. He did have that vision, have you read Arrian? He wanted to unite the world in peace. If that's true, then he was a man before even our own time. But the Mongols and the Nazis were nothing less than destructors of freedom and cultural variety. But no question : Alexander was a great emperor and he had great and good plans.
