German opera for the most part is pretty hard to get into in the first place, it just has a different darker atmosphere than italian or french, it's probably because of the somewhat abrasive quality of the language itself. But Berg takes it to the next level, I love it though.
I don't like this envisionment, it lacks the density, the filthiness and the darkness the opera has got. It's all too abstract to really express the image and atmosphere of Wozzeck. The music, nonetheless, is great, utterly great.
I remember reading a book about Stephen Sondheim which quoted an interview where he was asked about his musical influences; he named this work, adding that he doesn't like most operas, but this one was one of the few that he really liked, especially since the music was, in his eyes, perfectly integrated into the drama. Every note contributes to the atmosphere of madness, despair, and death of Büchner's original play.
@Tempodipiano: On the contrary, if you listen to JS Bach correctly you can understand Berg. Just as Bach's lines of melody are melodically independent but harmonically interdependent, so are the lines of melody of Bergs'. Of course within the context of 12 tone theory.
@wesleyan97 What I meant is that he implements tone-rows, and that the notes that make up the other voices running paralel to that melody are created to distinctly contrast the voice more 'forward' in the texture. That there is, in a sense, an ECONOMY to his part writing that is similar to Bach is the point I was trying to make. I know that in composing this opera Berg didn't adhere to the rigidity of Schoenberg's method. It still doesn't mean it isn't derived from it.

Wow i have to study this opera for music history, and in my opinion, this is just terrible. Like wow, i can't believe this is considered music. I know it's supposed to be like soo complex and modern but...it doesn't sound good. period.
When you are corrupted by society you will understand but I prefer you never will. But if someday you understand, try to forget, by listening JS Bach...
This music is pretty complex. It wasn't just pooped onto a page and then published. If that were the case, we probably wouldn't have productions of this and other similar 20th century works being made all over the world. You are right though, it sounds like jibberish sometimes but underneath it all it is incredibly complicated stuff.
actually, yes anyone can. That being said it will be people like Berg that are remembered while I assume if you ever attempted the craft you would be lucky to get school children to play your works.
haha, fair enough. though honestly Berg is one of the greats, I don't know your background, but I've spent a lot of time analyzing his music and there is much more thought involved in what he dose than you probably realize. This type of music is hard to write, but even harder to listen to, it requires much more from the listener than mozart does. To me the amount of work required to enjoy and understand this type of music was worth it, but it requires a lot of effort to get there.
berg is my hero!

@brandon71085 Wozzeck is not a 12-tone work. it's freely atonal.

I'm in the same boat as you (mchlcooper) is my professor. You just have to look at everything in the context of the time period that it is from.
