What a loss for Fairport Convention... Judy sounds amazing! And she had such a cool attitude! I'd love to see her knitting at the bottom of the stage as she was known to do in the sixties!!
Agreed. I love this vocal, song, and that entire first Fairport album from start to finish. One of my all-time favorites. By the way, JudyD9 who posted below is THE REAL ONE AND ONLY Judy Dyble! Go show her some love and subscribe to her channel. Judy is a true music legend who is still putting out amazing music to this day!
It might be well to list the writer of the song, too. However, I'm not sure if it was Jim or Jean Glover, as my LP only identified "J. Glover"--it was originally on the _Changes_ LP from Jim & Jean--I've seen it attributed to both of them, separately.
i love this version . . Everytime i listen to it it's like the first time . . I played guitar on one sure thing 2008 conspirators version. . . This was my first introduction of fairport and have since been greatly influenced by rt's unique guitar style . . And judy's vocals are amazing!
Brings back nostalgic memories of seeing the 1st Fairports lineup in '68/'69. See Judy's MySpace page for recordings this decade. Included is an acid-folk version of "See Emily Play". Redolent of Linda Perhacs.
I would give an arm and leg to have seen Fairport live back then. It was a very interesting era for the band. Too short of a period, but brilliant nonetheless while it lasted!
Great track off their first album! Just listen to young Richard's imaginative guitar solo. Love Judy Dyble's restrained vocal approach. Thought 'What we did on our holidays' was great too but , sacriligious?, I went off Fairport when they got heavily into English trad. music.
I can partly understand why you might have gone off them but, it's a shame as there is some fantastic traditional folk music. It's not just about the music either, it's history, it talks to you about the people who originally sang it. They actually helped me to get into the real folk music world.
This track is just fantastic, haunting and heartbreaking. For "he" write "she" in my case.

it was written by Jean (Ray) Glover (who was married to Jim Glover and who were collectively 'Jim & Jean') and Harvey Brooks.

I love this, I also love the traditional folk stuff that they did, but this first album was quite different to me.

Must get some more Judy Dyble on YouTube. Sadly overlooked fact that there was life before Sandy Denny. Great gutar from Richard Thompson.
