Once you know the behaviors of the infected a bit, the hunting rifle is a weapon of mass destruction. It instantly kills hunters and smokers with headshots, and boomers with chest shots, and I think it ignores the damage resistance the infected gain in advanced and expert, though I'm not sure about that.
