He Didn't finish the race , He was going to win but he turned around and went around the world again. i think he finally stopped in the Tahitian islands

No. I'm not sure he even crossed his outbound track (until he went round Cape Horn again). Not that it really matters, as he did do it partly to "keep going" and also, as he put it "to avoid losing his soul" by going back to a life on land that held no attraction for him.

Actually, tubelogin1 is correct. Moitessier started out 3000 miles behind Knox-Johnston and was rapidly catching up to him.

Moitessier crossed his outward path in the South Atlantic before abandoning the race. Knox-Johnston never crossed his outward bound path before he returned home to England - so technically, Moitessier beat him to it.

By Knox-Johnston's own admission in his book 'A World Of My Own', if Moitessier had stayed the course, it would have been a very close thing.

what i liked about him was he used traditional wayfinding skills- the lost art of pure navigation in an age of reliance on technology- he saw beyond it and realized that true sailing and inner guidance were the true ways to navigate. I heard from somewhere that he smoked pot..- this would be disappointing to me because i look up to him as pioneer in modern wayfinding. and smoking pot to me would not be purity- also a lost art...
