If you want to hear "the real" Genesis, go to Musical Box when they portray the Peter Gabriel era. As far as I am concerned, Phil Collins is a terrible front man compared to Peter. I would have had more respect for Genesis if they had broken up when Peter left. If they preferred to play more after that, better had done under a different name and line up altogether. As it is, they turned out to be the fake Genesis with a second rate front man.
I loved Phil Collins' drumming with the early Genesis (the one with Peter Gabriel in it). However, when Phil Collins started singing Peter's parts as lead vocalist, I developed a hatred for him. This was especially true when P.C. put out his first solo cd. The selling out had begun. The amazing lengths to which Genesis would go to sell out their musical integrity so that they could make hit records was sickening. Putting it another way, P.C. ain't no Peter Gabriel nor ever can be.
@chungiemunchin I pretty much agree with you except Phil actually had a smoother voice. Phil just did not sing with the emotion and story telling during later concerts doing Peter era songs. Peter had a brilliant way with theatrics and emotional power especially Supper's Ready, The Musical Box,Firth Of Fifth, Cinema Show and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight among countless others. Phil saved the group, but after W&W Prog was dead and they went for the cash.
The use of bass pedals during this time frame of Genesis live was beyond belief. Saw them many times in the 70's and every time left feeling like I just witnessed something so few will ever experience. watching it here is good but to see them live was just holy.
I was behind the fucking Iron Curtain and I was some 14 or so and somehow I got this Seconds Out double. And I took it into my open reel tape thing for I had to return the LP to the guy who gave me it for a night.
I was listening listening listening listening listening listening listening listening to it ever since. I still do it, today. CD, of course.
while the audio is definitely improved from the original, i think you have the highs a bit too loud compared to the lows. they're completely overshadowed by it. still good.
wow 3 different looking Jesuses on the stage !!! :O 1 behind the drums and miceophone, 1 behind the keyboards and 1 with a bass/guitar! :) God I love Genesis!!!
If you enjoy pre-Duke Genesis, you will never tire of this one. Keys, guitars and drums are brilliantly played and make Firth one the band's most admired songs.
Thank you for posting this. This is one of the greatest guitar solos ever. Steve Hackett is still touring (I have seen him twice in the past year) and is still playing Firth of Fifth. He has now reverted to the original 'Selling England' version. He is a virtuoso. Check out his new material. Absolutely brilliant.
Selling England by the Pound для меня был и остается лучшим их диском, который можно слушать бесконечно..и запись по моему не уступает студийной. Класс
so is this the real last great genesis solo? and don't say abacab either. i think it is the best guitar solo in genesis canon, and guitar solos are rare in this group
Although I prefer the Peter Gabriel era, Phil sings this song quite well if not even better. Mike's incredible bass pedals, Steve's beautiful melodic riff's. Tony's virtuoso key's.Phil's powerful yet soft voice.Chester and Phil's awesome and time keeping drumming. Truly an awesome group if not the best ever. They were always incredible live.
This display of skill is what 99% of musicans wish they could play like live! No dubbing in those days! This track has taken me through marriage, divorce, pregnancy and life's ups and downs. It's simply wonderful. X
@julie36food Liked to read about your life story, which was similar to mine. The instrumental part climbs to a climax at the Hackett's solo with Rutherford extended bass. I used to live in a wooden house at the 70's and the whole house was resonating at the climax.
@julie36food just had to reply to your post. favorite song..ever. it has taken me through 30 years of living as well. saw genesis live in early 80's - they played this, i was 13.
the piano is my ring tone...and it moves me to tears every time i listen to it. i don't know any other women who listen to vintage genesis. so...it's nice to know i'm not alone.
@julie36food Thank you for the comment Julie! I have never seen Genesis live but if I had a time machine this is one of the shows I would see! They compliment the the human spirit! I will try and see Peter Gabriel to see a touch of what I missed back in the 70's - was too young to appreciate the feelings it gives me now!
Steve Hackett is great on this. Darryl shreds too much and does not have the emotion that Steve extracts from his guitar. I'm not saying Darryl is not good. He is very good. Just that Hackett is more melodic due to his Classical style where Darryl is more of a Jazz style Guitarist. Incredible performance. Thanks Tommygun.
Genesis without Gabriel and Hacket is not Genesis..! Collins did an ok job filling in for Gabriel, but when Hacket left, Genesis' end was a fact! .. After that Collins should have changed the name.. Exodus mayhaps? Or Dis-Genesis :p
in fact, I didn't mean there is some relationship between the no intro-version and the change of the lead vocalist. I made two different observations.

Woah! Let's not go nuts here... Great (and I mean REALLY great) drummer. Adequate (and certainly his own) vocalist, but no Gabriel. I'm not qualified to comment on the acting!
nah, great vocalist, eve n gabriel himself has said that, the guy is what i call a genuine star\talent and i actually prefer his voice to gabriels.i think they are both fantastic singers....
@bauhaus1957 You're absolutely right! Genesis was never the same after Peter Gabriel left. People, listen to this with Gabriel singing, what a difference! And look what a difference in career. Collins is so commercial, while Peter Gabriel is still a very intelligent and extremely talented musician and singer. Steve Hacket is always great...
@KCOtutti1 Ive got to say that i enjoy genesis like 2 different bands. One from 67 to 77, and from 77 and out. i mean, obviously, their gabriel period was the best, but look at a trick of the tail or wind and wuthering. its not bad, is it? When it comes to their later career, theres a lot of bad stuff, but look at Mama, Land of Confusion and Abacab. Its not genesis, but its not terrible either. Thats my opinion, anyways...
Nonsense. The Gabriel-versions weren't anywhere as good as this. Phil's really whomping those drums! This version has the needed muscle. I've been listening to it for years, probably before you were born.
@bauhaus1957@bauhaus1957 I agree the without the piano intro the song is less effective. However this is NOTHING to do will Phil being lead singer. The piano intro requires a grand piano which was completely impractical to tour with at the time.
Peter Gabriel asked Tony Banks to cut the piano intro during the Selling England tour as Banks screwed up and Gabriel had to cover for him. Check out this link to see a rare performance with the intro on electric piano-sounds terrible!
TY - so many, many memories - and this version in the beginning SO demonstrates why Phil was able to take the band to the next level.
Additionally, it shows the virtuoso of Tony Banks, who actually wrote most of Firth - no question that it is his contribution to classical music in the longer term.
Hackett's guitar is good but actually the Rutherford's bass melody behind the guitar solo gives me goosebumps. It's hard to hear the bass on this video though.
@angusyoung98 why? this is this fantastic and Collins rips the drums waaaay better than on Selling England by the Pound... but, they are both great,, I think..
One of the best songs I've ever heard, and one of the best guitar solos ever. Living proof that one does not need Yngwie's speed and technique to be a brilliant guitar player. Too bad most kids nowadays listen to Lady Gaga and some other crap, rather than this kind of classical rock.
@smartcatxxx I agree with you, today's young generation, listen to Eminem, 50 Cent, and others and don't know what for example Deep Purple is!!! I'm also fourteen years old but my dad wants me to listen for good music and I love it.
''Kids those days'' listened to The Archies and other bubblegum pop. It's easy to complain about the present because so much crap gets filtered away through time.
Brilliant, just Brilliant! Classical rock at it's best. This has always been my fav. track of Genesis. I saw them live in Sydney many years ago and to see them perform it live again sends shivers through my spine. Just awesome! Thanks for uploading.
I've always loved this song. I also like how expressive Phil was in these older live performances. Anybody know what this song is actually about. When I was much younger I listened to "Seconds Out" religiously. My cry as a teenager was when I die, bury me with my Yes and Genesis albums.
Sadly I must confess to the same affliction because I turn 50 on 31 Dec. Seeing these guys play live (in Dundee on 13 Jan 77) when I was still a kid was something I'll never forget. Best concert I'd ever seen and I haven't seen anything to match it since then (including seeing Genesis themselves later in about 1981). I think they lost their magic when Steve Hackett left and they decided to change their style.
Just incredible - if only the uninitiated, could be un-uninitiated, then they might realise that Genesis was/is not a noodling, boring 'prog-rock' dinosaur group, but a band that was frequently capable of transcending any known form of music and operating on a genuinely higher plane. Music of The Gods, to be enjoyed for the rest of time.
Wow Tommy Thanks so much. My favorite song, if I was forced to pick one. I do miss the piano as well ,all the progressions of this song are magical. These are treasures to have since I was only a kid in the early 70's without a chance to see them. The guys may find this strange but as a woman I love working out to older Genesis. Getting lost in the music is a great way to forget you are sweating on a treadmill. If i owned six hours live I'd be in incredible shape! Beautiful work Tommy keep it up!
Genesis was by far one of the best stage bands ever in the history of progressive rock music...this was a perfect example of their unlimited talent and stage presence
At 5:50 when Hackett flips the selector switch on his Les Paul... that's when the power pours out & passes right through bodies

TY - so many, many memories - and this version in the beginning SO demonstrates why Phil was able to take the band to the next level.
Additionally, it shows the virtuoso of Tony Banks, who actually wrote most of Firth - no question that it is his contribution to classical music in the longer term.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had more close-up shots of his hands in action?

Hackett's guitar is good but actually the Rutherford's bass melody behind the guitar solo gives me goosebumps. It's hard to hear the bass on this video though.

i prefer Peter Gabriel's version much more

Beautiful sound quality Tommygun. Have not heard anything as good as this on YouTube.

Tony Banks is a musical genius.
Genesis - one of the best bands ever, their music is so amazing, and I like how they changed the style of their music as the years went on.

NakedSnakeIta hai ragione, peccato non sia il grande Peter Gabriel e non quel pirla di collins

Tony always looks so mellow on keys. Steve's guitar is haunting. A-1 stuff here.

Dopo questo brano, la musica è decaduta; una simile perfezione non si potrà mai più raggiungere.

Genesis was by far one of the best stage bands ever in the history of progressive rock music...this was a perfect example of their unlimited talent and stage presence
garyraybuckner 3 years ago
The Aristocracy of Rock. Arguably, the greatest progressive song ever written (see "The Cinema Show" , "The Musical Box", "Supper's Ready").
