I'm singing this solo in school for a Solo/small ensemble festival that's in a few weeks (Dec. 2, 2011) and I've only been working on this for a few lessons with this video and I already feel honored to do such a beautiful French piece by Reynaldo Hahn. Thank you for uploading this video in this key! It's much help for my high singing voice. :)
La beaute exceptionnelle de sa voix m'a fait pleurer. C'etait vraiment "l'heure exquise" pendant que j'ecoutais ce chant. Merci a Madame Susan Graham.
Truly beautiful.... everyone has different tastes, I can confess that I prefer this to either of the two (deservedly) much-lauded counter-tenor versions. Just a matter of personal preference. A song as beautiful as this deserves different interpretations and different voices
Lovely performance. I am no expert, but love good singers, so I quite like it when somebody recommends a singer I haven't heard, I've learned such a lot that way on Youtube, thanks.
Hi everybody, I am looking for sheet music for this song and for A Chloris, in soprano version. So in this key, Sussan in singing in. I cannot find in anywhere. Can somebody help?
@HoneyAndRue I know you've probably gotten it or given up by now but just in case the sheet music is included in The First Book of Soprano Solos Part 2 from G. Schirmer, Inc. distributed by Hal Leonard
I just discovered this song a few minutes ago. It really is exquise. The sheet music I printed out says "original key" and the highest note is a D sharp, which is mezzo or even contralto territory. Ms. Graham is singing an F. In any key, by any good singer, this is pure magic.
I used to think only a tenor, like Martyn Hill, could do justice to these songs. I had been listening to them for close on 20 years, and for me, Hill was THE interpreter. Then a friend played the Graham for me. Blew me completely away. I'll try the Vallin now that I know about it. These songs are desert island stuff for me - I don't care who does them, I never tire of them.
I don't understand why people have to always compare performances. All this " Listen to this " and " Such and Such is better" is annoying and pointless. . Why can't we just enjoy the different and lovely performances of the songs we love.
Well, I am nor so sure if it is really the "portamento-thing" that causes the beauty of Ninon Vallin's interpretation. But today I had a discussion with a student of a student of Ninon Vallin, and I guess there are many people, who agree that a special technique, taste and discretion has disappeared over the last decades. Graham does a good job, indeed, but I guess it is fair to say that American taste is not French taste! :-)))
Graham, no doubt, has a beautiful voice--but forget it, if you want to hear the real thing, and how personal this music can be, listen to Ninon Vallin. You will have the added, not to be underestimated, benefit that it is Hahn himself at the piano!

Yes, if you listen to Vallin you will hear immediately what is missing here. Vallin uses portamento, a TECHNICAL device that allows the voice to project forward and is completely misunderstood and ignored by singers today. There is no personal magic or charm with Graham and Vignoles; it's all careful, precise, calculated, and boring.
i'm not sure you understand portamento. i was taught that it's almost like a glissando between two notes, not a device that projects the voice... and if I misunderstood you and you are speaking about a version of a glissando, it's not "ignored" by singers today, it simply is outdated. It is used sparingly in opera today
Aaaahh this would have been so helpful back when I was studying this song! I met Susan yesterday at the Met stage door (amazing Donna Elvira - who would've thought?), and she was very sweet.
I just wish I could have as beautiful of a voice as hers.

Type in hahn, l'heure exquise and score or musicsheet, than find the free score. Usually it can be found on the first page of the results.
It is in the free domain, so no copyright.
Then print the PDF file. And sing!

@SOFunnyBFs Learn it until you don't need the sheet music. Listen to it regularly. Then once you've done your gig, let it go again.
