Aircraft designed to land on carriers are built to land hard. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong. They don't flare b/c they have such a small landing area that they need to hit in order to trap. You can look & compare how bulky the landing gear looks from Navy & Marine planes to other planes that have less bulky gear since they don't have to land on a ship. Other planes flare when they land to soften the impact & they can b/c they have a much greater margin for error for their targeted landing area

They don't flare because of the large amount of stress that gets put on the landing gear when they land. If they would flare then the rear landing gear would collapse and they would crash. They need the gear in the front for equal weight distribution and if they caught the wire while the nose gear was still up the gear would slam onto the deck and damage it or destroy it.

I've been on a carrier. If you flare on landing and your tail hook catches a wire with more then 50% of your landing gear in the air, you run the risk of what we call a "running engagement". Your aircraft is literally yanked out of the air and slammed onto the carrier deck. Seen it twice, very scary and very costly.

Ive seen a documental about this. When you aproach to the carrier, you dont put off the engines to not crash if you miss the cables... They put the engine in max rev but not making it accelerate and if they miss, they put it to accelarate in that moment, so they can live to tell it another day.
