The strongest earthquake ever recorded (9.5 magnitude) struck off the coast of Chile on May 22, 1960, causing tsunamis over 10 meters high, that traveled as far as Hawaii, Japan, and New Zealand, killing 4,000-5,000 and leaving over 2,000,000 people homeless.
