I am an indian and I did not enjoy the film for another reason. The reason is that the film was made in english language. And I think that is why it failed to express real emotions of the characters who normally would not speak english. In india when you speak english you necessarily belong to a class of people different than one shown in the film. And I think that is why many indians could not identify with the film. Other than that it was a good film but a little overhyped.

I went to India recently and most people there thought this movie was more like "OK". They prefered their own movies, remember Slumdog Millionaire is not Bollywood or Indian, it is completely Hollywood/American but made about Indians. The real train stations I saw in India were far worse and slummy looking then the cleaned up, aimed at Western kids music video scenes in this movie.

Guys, us "westerners" aren't trying to insult your culture. A lot of us think your culture is beautiful, but we don't understand it. We have slums in America as well, though a lot of ignorant Americans would like to deny it. This is just to give a much-needed sense of context to us. There are people less fortunate in the world, and it's depressing what others go through. The same movie could have very-well been based in the Bronx, or London, or Beijing.
