@zombeboz1 no, i got that i was disguised ... but as my OWN team! The reason for doing this is so that if a player does see you they don't know that your team has a spy. Ideally your cloaked ;) My problem being that I hadn't switched to the enemy disguise before sapping.

you disguise as your OWN team so they don't know you have a spy. They were ALL engie and all inside their intel room. An engie outside would have been obvious. So if they see an approaching enemy demo they back off and get ready to defend they're sentries. But instead a spy sneaks in and then they don't constantly spy check ;)

I use that technique of disguising as a friendly player on Dm_Duel and using the dead ringer. To get into the enemy base, you have to go along a lot of beams up top, and there's always snipers waiting for you o_O
