The reason they did a "title change" (which went to Macho Man Savage), Hogan was getting ready to take time off. He needed it, to film "No Holds Barred". Ironically, he wore a white WWE Title Belt, for that movie, so "Rip" would be WWE Champion. Ultimate Warrior wore that belt, when he was champ.
So this means that Triple H was never the first World Heavyweight Champion because the title was handed to him and Ric Flair is actually a 15 time instead?
I remember back in 1997 at a Livevent some teen kids were yelling at the curtain or "The Gorilla Position" they were yelling or making pig noises, (you name it) at Henry O Godwin (he took offense yelling back STFU) and out comes out of the curtain was Dave Hebner he yelled at me and told me I get ejected from the arena and the people behind me told Dave it was not him...it was those guys cause as soon the curtain open they ran off, long story short security caught them and was kicked out.
In Chris Jericho's book, he writes about this match. Back when he was as big a fan as all of us! He wrote of being devastated, not to mention missing the greatest moment as he chose to go somewhere else on the same night, so he was double devastated! Reading that made me look this old footage up again. I remember watching this on tv at the time and I was crushed! I didn't wanna go to school the next day! Has to be one of the best story lines EVER!!!
According to the Honky Tonk Man in a shoot interview, MDM was supposed to become WWF Champion at Wrestlemania IV - as he was digging his heels in over the dropping of the IC title to Savage and instead elevated Savage to WWF Champion instead, wanting to drop IC title to Warrior at Summerslam in whirlwind fashion to create maximum effect - of which it did of course, but robbed MDM the greatest ring general since Triple H the deserved chance of a world title run.
Ya know what, this was back before everyone who got in the ring picked up a hand held mic. and it was beautiful back then, the story telling was like something out of a Chaplin movie. So clear and easy to follow. classic shickanery.
since history proves that Jack Tunney was never in any position to make these crucial decisions (Vince MacMahon was actually in control), I think Ted Dibiase has a very good slander and fraud case here. He bought the title on good faith. He must have squandered a fortune on it cause now he preaches for mere pennies. Perhaps this debacle cost him a mortgage or other property....I'd sue the WWE for breach of promise.
@RSXemperor85 I disagree. The tournament gave fans the opportunity to see Hogan on the big stage with an actual on screen "chance" to win the title back, while potentially facing off against Andre in another blockbuster match. Vince squeezed every ounce of money from the screwjob he could and I don't think any WrestleMania variation without Hogan vying for to win "his" title back would have sold as well with the paying customers.
And thus, Wrestlemania IV was the big tournament. Macho Man went through 4 men in one night to become the new World's Champion by defeating Dibiase in the final. DiBiase again tried to buy off the tournament, paying off Andre to eliminate Hogan from the tournament and drawing a bye, but Hogan got his revenge in the end via a chair shot to DiBiase's back while the Million Dollar Dream was cinched into Savage, elbow drop, and the rest is history...
This screwjob was better than 1997. Too bad Earl was crooked to begin with. lol Dave was like Brian just i wish Brian didnt look like a race car driver.
I remember when this match happened. After the match and post match ref confusion, Hulk did like a twenty minute pose down and the crowd was nuts during the whole thing
if you look carefully they actually switched. they said the one who was in the match (dave in real life) was the phony but after hogan grabbed both of them then let go, they switched so the "real one (earl) actually knocked the fake one down and hogan threw the real one outside the ring lol.
@PeteMcD923 he screwed triple h after triple h push earl on his ass when triple h was wrestling chris jericho for the wwf title i think it was back in 1999-2000
This wasn't the first time Andre called the World title the tag team championship..I remember as a kid whenever he would say "Tag Team Championship" I would laugh my ass off..
Hogan crying like this...its not manly. You win some and lose some and somtimes its not fair. Look at the Hulkamaniacs...besides themself....there is always tommorow. Andre was a great man. Great angle but I never usnderstood why they made Hogan lose it like a child. Would have been better if he nodded, pointed and said next time. Agree?
man this was the glory days of wrestling ... story lines feel so real. not like today !!! and yes dibiase looksa really good with that belt !!!! love that laugh !! lol
OMG I HAVE 2 SAY THAT WAS GREAT. THAT WAS WHEN WRESTLING WAS @ IT'S PEAK. SO MUCH BETTER THEN. N I WASN'T EVEN A BIG WWF FAN @ THAT TIME EITHER BUT WE ALL KNEW ABOUT THIS IN SCHOOL
Why didn't DiBiase have Andre the Giant just lay down for him? All Tunney said was you must win the belt by pin or submission in a match. Andre lays down, Ted wins, he doesn't get stripped.
this was unbelievable that this happened back in 88 because hogan is the top face of the wwe at the time and he would not lose cleanly to a heal because hogan would only lose by a heal who cheats to beat him thas how it is with top faces at the time, and hogan had to lose the belt and this was the perfect fitting to have randy savage get the belt because hogan left to do no holds barred and get the belt back when he came back because he was portrayed as wwe champ in the movie so he get it back
I read in an interview with Dave that Earl got carried away with the beating and broke Dave's rib when he kicked him and Earl got his shoulder broken when Hogan over threw him to the floor.
Twin Hebners? That had to be one of the stupidest story angles ever invented for a wrestling match. However, how much of it was pre-orchestrated by whom will be a mystery for all time. Maybe Hogan knew he would lose and decided to "pay off" the twin in order to avoid jobbing clean to the Giant? What a good excuse for getting pinned. Still, he did get his arm up to avoid the three-count. It did not matter, of course, since the referee's decision is final, whether it is a good or a bad call.
If Andre and DiBiase had played their cards right, DiBiase would've challenged Andre for the title the following week. There's a bunch of hype. The match starts: DiBiase pokes Andre, Andre falls and gets pinned, and we have a new champ. Andre/DiBiase shake hands and mock the crowd, screwing them over. :)
@CrazyJustin2006 You're right...I'll just have to wait patiently until Nash challenges Hogan for the belt and merely pokes him to win the match and...waaaaaaaaait a minute! ;)
Amazing how this foreshadows Montreal, by almost 10 years no less. Course, whereas this was kayfabe, Montreal was 100% real. Oh Earl Hebner, you sly shyster.
LOL! I always thought that was what he said too. Can't believe he remembered to say that he "surrendered" the title when he was already confused as to which title it was.
You do understand that Hogan only acted like that because he was supposed to, right? That's what was planned all along. Yeah, it was a silly screwjob angle to get the belt off of Hogan so he could make No Holds Barred and take some time off. Hogan acted like he did because Vince wanted him to.
Kayfabe was alive and well! Same as when Earthquake "injured" Hulk Hogan in 1990, as I recall, he took that time off to make Suburban Commando. I was a kid at the time and even sent Hulk a get well card!!
I agree, it was rather silly looking back on it. But at the same time I suppose, Vince felt the need to keep Hogan strong, although I'm not really sure what a clean loss to Andre would have done to really hurt him. I don't think it would have done anything and they could still have done the storyline with Andre giving the belt to DiBiase and then the title being vacated for the Wrestlemania IV tournament. Thing is that Hogan was going to take some time off and they needed the belt off him.
It started when DiBiase complained that Andre was "cheated" out of a chance to win the belt. The Million Dollar Man had called the ref a "Hulkamoron." I laughed so hard when he did.
With Andre and Virgil at his side, DiBiase did seem too powerful for Hogan to handle. Talk about an insurance policy!
Hogan was outrageous as he balled over how he lost. What did he think would happen? He came out alone. Andre had DiBiase and Virgil in his corner. That told me Hogan would lose the match.
This has to be one of the most ridiculous storylines in the history of wrestling! Vince would do anything to sell tickets by setting up such soap-opera drama! Ridiculous. To make things even worse, that twin-Hebner angle was stupid beyond belief, especially when one began to hit the other. How laughable was that?
Was Tunney blind? He did not address the twin-Hebner issue! He could have ruled the entire match as invalid and returned the title to Hogan. Again, it was simply ridiculous.
@MarkieBhoy17 The reason i typed that and put in it in quotes is because the commentator says it. And it its funny to me because its so absurd. But dont worry kid, you'll get it someday.

Some storylines become too silly.

Simple, Dave and Earl Hebner are twin brothers.
leandar 2 years ago
I hate Earl Hebner because he was apart of the Montreal Screwjob.

He Wasw Paid To Screw Bret Out Of The Title. It Was Either The Montreal Screwjob Or Lossing His Job. Which Would You Chosse?

This has to be one of the most ridiculous storylines in the history of wrestling! Vince would do anything to sell tickets by setting up such soap-opera drama! Ridiculous. To make things even worse, that twin-Hebner angle was stupid beyond belief, especially when one began to hit the other. How laughable was that?
Was Tunney blind? He did not address the twin-Hebner issue! He could have ruled the entire match as invalid and returned the title to Hogan. Again, it was simply ridiculous.

whow was the real referee? Hulk should have won the match!!!!!!
PAtrick92123 2 years ago
That is a mystery which I do not believe has ever been solved to this day...

Vince sure has a thing for lookalike conspiracies...years later he'd do something similar with Kurt Angle, his lookalike brother and the Undertaker.

I must agree. I had always hoped the transfer of the title would have somehow been ruled as valid.
