As an person with Asperger's, I have done a lot of research on this issue. The incidence of autism corresponds with the expansion of the definition autism to include Asperger's. That, combined with better awareness of higher-functioning autism and the usual faddish misdiagnoses explain why the numbers went up. Had my parents forgone vaccinating me, I would still have AS, plus a good chance of contracting polio, small pox, and a host of other nasty diseases.
Can you recommend a book about the history of vaccination? I have studied biology and have a pretty good grasp on immunology, but find it difficult to discuss the topic with "layman." In my own lifetime I have known several people my father's age that had a withered limb from polio. The only person I know in my age group (1960's) that had a polio leg is a friend that grew up in Siberia.

@MikeMarcin I don't expect any medical intervention to be 100% safe. I accept that vaccines involve weighing up risks & benefits, and to my mind the benefits of "herd immunity" outweigh the risks.
Even if you or your kids aren't immunised, you still get the benefit of the herd immunity of your neighbours. But if you succeed in persuading them to give up vaccines, you and your kids WILL be in more danger of catching these diseases.

I was born in 1954 and I feel so lucky that I was vaccinated against Polio, and other diseases. I recall stories told by my parents of friends contracting and dying (or worse) from Polio within hours of infection, and each summer swimming pools having to close. What a horrible, frightening time, and it annoys me when some misguided morons want to take us all back to it. What idiots!

@MikeMarcin Here's some evidence for you: Prior to the introduction of the Salk vaccine, paralytic polio cases in the US were 135 per million; afterwards they dropped to 26 per million. When the Sabin vaccine was introduced they dropped to 2.4 per million. They're now 4 per 100 million.

One main piece of evidence, which you can verify by looking out your window, is the noticeable lack of polio victims making their way up and down the street in their wheelchairs. Before the Salk vaccine, whenever there was a polio outbreak (btw, when was the last one of those?) this would have been a common sight.

We're talking about the 1940s, not the 1840s, polio wasn't spread because of open sewers or horse shit in the streets, hygeine wasn't much different back then than it is now. The difference came from vaccines.
The above graphs, are taken from Greg Beattie's excellent book "Vaccination A Parent's Dilemma" and represent the decline in death rates from infectious disease in Australia. They clearly show that vaccines had nothing to do with the decline in death rates.
So technically, looking out my window is not real evidence that vaccines are safe or effective.

1. Why "Death Rate" and not "Incidence"? Wouldn't we expect the death rate to drop as sanitation, nursing and doctoring improved? What about those people who survived the disease but were left horribly disfigured or crippled? A drop in Death Rate doesn't prove there was a drop in Incidence prior to vaccination (more)
2. The figures all start at 1880, but Polio starts at 1950 and finishes in 1964. Polio is an erratic disease with natural variations in incidence so why did he choose these dates? One conclusion is that he picked dates because the figures just happened to support his hypothesis. What happened with Polio from 1890 onwards AND WHY DOESN'T HE WANT TO TELL US?
3. Australia is a vast country which even now is sparsely populated. In 1880, its population was less than 3 million. Did epidemics spread the same way as more populous countries? What effect did the RFDS have on death rates from 1928?

I was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrom and yes I was vaccinated but you know what? I know plenty of people who were also Vaccinated and they are perfectly fine. Here's a question: did most deaths from this Rotavirus previous to the administration of the vaccine occur outside the West? Because I looked it up and I'm reading a PRO-vaccine site that says that only 20 deaths occur from it in the U.S. per year, and that the potential side-effects of this particular vaccine don't outweigh the benefits. As an person with Asperger's, I have done a lot of research on this issue. The incidence of autism corresponds with the expansion of the definition autism to include Asperger's. That, combined with better awareness of higher-functioning autism and the usual faddish misdiagnoses explain why the numbers went up. Had my parents forgone vaccinating me, I would still have AS, plus a good chance of contracting polio, small pox, and a host of other nasty diseases.

Can you recommend a book about the history of vaccination? I have studied biology and have a pretty good grasp on immunology, but find it difficult to discuss the topic with "layman." In my own lifetime I have known several people my father's age that had a withered limb from polio. The only person I know in my age group (1960's) that had a polio leg is a friend that grew up in Siberia.

@MikeMarcin I don't expect any medical intervention to be 100% safe. I accept that vaccines involve weighing up risks & benefits, and to my mind the benefits of "herd immunity" outweigh the risks.
Even if you or your kids aren't immunised, you still get the benefit of the herd immunity of your neighbours. But if you succeed in persuading them to give up vaccines, you and your kids WILL be in more danger of catching these diseases.
BTW, I've more mercury in my teeth than any vaccine!

I was born in 1954 and I feel so lucky that I was vaccinated against Polio, and other diseases. I recall stories told by my parents of friends contracting and dying (or worse) from Polio within hours of infection, and each summer swimming pools having to close. @MikeMarcin Here's some evidence for you: Prior to the introduction of the Salk vaccine, paralytic polio cases in the US were 135 per million; afterwards they dropped to 26 per million. When the Sabin vaccine was introduced they dropped to 2.4 per million. They're now 4 per 100 million.
I don't need obviously fabricated quotes from obviously idiotic web sites when the numeric evidence is overwhelming. Polio vaccines saves lives and prevent suffering.

One main piece of evidence, which you can verify by looking out your window, is the noticeable lack of polio victims making their way up and down the street in their wheelchairs. Before the Salk vaccine, whenever there was a polio outbreak (btw, when was the last one of those?) this would have been a common sight.

We're talking about the 1940s, not the 1840s, polio wasn't spread because of open sewers or horse shit in the streets, hygeine wasn't much different back then than it is now. The above graphs, are taken from Greg Beattie's excellent book "Vaccination A Parent's Dilemma" and represent the decline in death rates from infectious disease in Australia. They clearly show that vaccines had nothing to do with the decline in death rates.
So technically, looking out my window is not real evidence that vaccines are safe or effective.

1. Why "Death Rate" and not "Incidence"? Wouldn't we expect the death rate to drop as sanitation, nursing and doctoring improved? I was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrom and yes I was vaccinated but you know what? I know plenty of people who were also Vaccinated and they are perfectly fine. Its easy and maybe even sexy to point the blame on the medical establishment because thats almost every single movie cliche' we have ever seen. Including 1 of my favorite movies Resident Evil. Here's a question: did most deaths from this Rotavirus previous to the administration of the vaccine occur outside the West? Because I looked it up and I'm reading a PRO-vaccine site that says that only 20 deaths occur from it in the U.S. per year, and that the potential side-effects of this particular vaccine don't outweigh the benefits.
