@PeterGartner You a hardcore drug dealer or something? Unless you are then you speak with 0 authority. Furthermore I sense you and I have a few disagreements about what makes a 'man'
Dukie is an example of the realities of living in these kind of socially broken areas. Some people say that it is up to you to get out of the projects and do better. But Dukie is obviously someone with lots of potential, the most out of all of his friends at least, and he ends up the worst at the end out of all four boys. Namond was a spoiled brat, and a jerk most of the time, and was handed a better opportunity at a better future. Poetic justice doesn't exist in real life- not always
life is real we hav to remember how sm pep. live its easy to forget if u never lived in a place like that sm pep. jus need help but who will save the ones that can be saved?
Because to give up is to demonstrate the tendencies you yourself described as deplorable. By knowingly condemning people to a life of violence, how does that make one any less a violent sociopath than an actual murderer? One can pretend to be high and mighty because they didn't actually pull the trigger, but that doesn't make it any less excusable; they were just as responsible for the lives lost if they could have intervened in an otherwise troubled child's life.
Promoting kids to high school when they're not socially ready just so it looks good on the stats. The school system's as bad as the corners. Eating em up and spittin em out
@jonb3917 It's a problem of student numbers and funding. There's only so much space in a school, and the resources to help kids who are struggling are not there. The system literally can't hold them, there's no space. That's what is really behind "social promotion", at least in the inner city.
If somebody like be would be in Dukies position I would becaome a hard ass nothing to loose desperado style dealer. I would really fuck up a looot of people...
Yeah thats really fucked up. Immigrants in Europe are waaaaaaaaay better off then those guys who you see on this show who were born in America. This really looks like some backward third world country...You guys have a lot of work to do there in the US.
i'm really torn on whether Marcia Donnelly's philosophy is the best 4 her school. on one hand, u don't wanna b so shook over the shit 2 many of these kids experience that it effects ur performance. however, the ability 2 relate & be compassionate 2ward the pain & misfortune of others is human! by being so guarded & putting up walls, it no doubt helps the assistant principal go about her day but is she really able 2 better serve her students by hardening 2 their life struggles?
@htownhomie06 As a teacher, I can tell you that Dukie's story is fictional, but typical. At the same time, education has to be a pririty instilled by the family, and with many poor people, black and white, it is not a top priority. Their priorities involve immediate survival and getting by...by damn near any means necessary. I have several 15 year old 8th-graders. They love middle school because they are the BMOC. I'm for social promotion. Schools cannot and will not save everyone. Self reliance
@wallyworld776 great to hear your inside perspective. but my question becomes as a teacher aren't you pretty irrelevant to the lives of the very students you're trying to "help"? agreed schools can't save all nor is it their responsibility. however, i still see social promotion as part of the problem. also agreed priorities start @ home but we've reached critical mass where those w/out "ideal" homes are suffering. i still believe schools, like other facets of society, can do more to help.
no, dukie did have 2 big things going 4 him: real friends & he wasn't stupid at all. it's just that the one thing he valued most was bascially being taken away from him (home run with his boys). u gotta think back 2 junior high days & remember what that was like. cliques & peer groups were the whole world. most kids didn't step outside that comfort zone. U think Dukie would've reacted the same way if Mike, Randy & Na were going with him?
He a marshmallow in da game. A nigga like him don't have the potential for dis gangsta shit. He should be in college, raising a family and livin' in da burbs. Not da hood, cause the nigga had potential just like Wallace.
Step off you faggot ass muthafucka. If you think I'm about to argue with you over the internet about some TV show, then you're mentally retarded. Stop talking shit over the net like a lil bitch
cosign the way she was runnin that school how sum kids only had 2 go like 2 days n cutty was like school is school thats a fucced up way 2 run school 2 let kids u kno ditchin let them ditch as long as they come so u can get yo money i mean if u got truant officers use them dont use them for the kid 2 meet the status quo
@gauchebag If by "smart" you mean physically intimidating and emotionally hardened, then yeah, Dukie wasn't smart. If he had received the opportunity that Namond did, Dukie would have had a bright future. I think the storyline involving these kids is what gave the Wire its real weight. Underneath the "cops and robbers" entertainment, people - children - being thrown away like they were trash.
