I heard this song in the background at a market in Daylesford a week or 2 back. I recognised it as a song from my chilhood and it's been bugging me that I couldn't remember what it was called or the artist. Thanks for putting it up nzoz1960s. I'll see if it's on i-tunes now.
just discovered this, hav'nt seen these for 40 years?,what a lot of memories .was a great time the infancy of pop in oz,lots of fun as i remember it,doug was the only kiwi, and I was the ryth/guitar,doug and I founded the group.I did form "pig iron bob" 10 years ago now ,left 5 years ago and doug is playing with them.we both now reside in central west and play together occasionally, going to record a solo project of my railway songs.thanks for your kind words james wynne
I really LOVE this video, but something happened to it. It plays too fast, and you only get 0:27 seconds of the song. nzoz1960s, could you fix this, or reload it, or explain to me what went wrong? I really, really LOVE this song, and would LOVE to find a full copy of it! Thanks!
Hayride and La La both appeard on the self-titled debut album in 1969. As previously noted those songs were not typical of the stuff that the band was playing at that time, which was country-rock heavily influenced by The Byrds - there were 3 Byrds covers on that first album.
.
I have just uploaded the three original songs from that debut album, all written by Doug Rowe.
@moth3rfck3r , try a site called midoztouch and search for the group or Prepared in peace the album. the site has a treasure trove of older ozzie music no longer in print, you wont be sory and its safe
They made it big in Australia but ..... they were originally a Kiwi band. Also, Hayride and LaLa were seriously atypical of where they were at and everything else they played.
i cant believe i found this site. I grew up with this band and best friends with one of their sisters. Fantastic, i feel like i am back in the 70's. good on you fr putting this on youtube.
I only know this song from "The Boston". It was the A-Side and the B-Side was "Bang Bang Lulu". The Cover featured a pink apple. I miss this single dearly.... HELP!!!
You can get this song. Download a freeware sound editing porogram called Audacity and just record it dirctly from this video. Set the program to "wave out mix" and you can record whatever is playing on yr computer.
Even if Flying Circus didn't have any hits in the U.S., it sounds like they influenced the sound of several bands and artists from both the U.S. and other countries (mainly Britian) that would be making music that would be very popular in the U.S. shortly after this vid. was released (I'm thinking Ron Dante's The Archies & Cufflinks, Christie, Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, Mungo Jerry & even Three Dog Night).
I was one of the few people privalged to here the first recording of Hayride. I worked with the abss guitarist Jim( cant remember his last name) he used to be a commercial artist. He bought the cut into work and said it was Tiny Tim. He was a real character aand a great guy. Love bubble gum.
I took my sweet heart to their show at Albion Park hall, that was fine, but then her parents heard this song.. making love in the hay.. told not to go around there anymore, but I fuck her anyway
wow cute song! I remember it well as a kid.....very cute A bit like the George Baker Selection Tres Boppy and nice (accent on that E*) I believe it was an Aussie band
From memory, I somehow (very vaguely) recall this fantastic song from the "Uptight" TV show (Ross D. Wylie, host). Tho I might be wrong on that. I can't recall this film clip (my memory is too fuzzy, hazy, these days, I guess; sometimes age DOES catch up with you) Albeit fairly simplistic as rock music goes, this song was nonetheless a bright, happy, catchy, 'singalong' one , v. typical of those great times of the 60s. And as I recall it was, quite justifiably, a huge hit for Flying Circus.
I remember this song a a nine year old in Kalgoorlie W/Aust and can still see my mum bopping to it all these years later.......Great memories of a better time
I saw Flying Circus play at the Merryland's RSL Community Hall, the band arrived in a back of a van. I also think another band was playing that night called Aeosops Fables. Hayride was banned in New Zealnd at the time cause of the lyric "Making love in the hay". It was great to see Aussie Bands doing suburban gigs
Oh boy my fave Aus band from the late 60s. They won the Hoadley's Battle of the Sounds in 1970, beating hot favourites Autumn and Zoot. I have a signed copy of "The Flying Circus" LP when they did a concert in my town - line up was Doug Rowe, Terry Wilkins, Colin Walker and James Wynne. Their Byrds stuff out-Byrdsed the Byrds (if u know what I mean....). They were a top band....and this song does not do them justice, IMHO....but it is still great to see it posted...thanks.
Well I'm an oldie. I used to work with Jim the bass guitarist who was a commercial artist but can't remember is last name. An I can recall him telling me about them using the recording studio to make "Hayride".
They did win the battle of the bands and went Canada. "Hayride" was #2 on the charts, being only topped by Obli do Ob li da. I went to few of their concerts. I also screeenprinted their tee-shits for their apperance on 'Bandstand'
Wow, memories alright,I went to Terry Wilkins (lead singer)wedding at The Wayside Chapel. He married my girlfriend's cousin, Leonie, that's the only reason I got an invite :) I was only 16 and man did I get smashed at the reception at Tilly's Winebar. What a blast, rubbing shoulders with a 'who's who' of pop and rock dudes of the time... eh there was Darryl Cotton and... ehh, oh yeah, Darryl Cotton :) Best thing about knowing Terry was free tickets to Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath, thanks Terry
No I don't, the last time I saw him was when Flying Circus played at Sunbury 73. They all 'relocated' to Canada, no idea what happened with the band, or Terry. I know some 'personal' stuff, about Terry and Leonie, but it's not appropriate to mention here.
Because if that guy had turned out to be a friend of Terry's, he might have messaged me 'privately'. The 'personal stuff' would have been 'of concern' to a friend, he didn't message me so I didn't pass on the info.
Flying Circus's hits were bubblegum (who can forget - are even better remember - the horrid "La La"), but they mostly played Byrds-like country rock. Great band, underapprecieted then and now.
Don't knock 'La La'. That was on the radio when I was going out with my first girlfriend. Ah, memories. Actually, FC hated it and Hayride ... they saw themselves as a serious country rock outfit but, as with so many Aussie bands at the time, the record company had an armlock on them when it came to recording. The next single, 'Run Run' was better. Too bad they had to leave the country to be themselves.
you know this songs special to me cos it was the first song i ever heard on the radio when we emigrated to Australia from the Uk on 11th June 1969..now arn't you glad i told you that... cheers thankx for sharing.
historically fantastic; musically appalling. the flying circus were a hell of a lot more than this doggerel or even being a "byrds tribute band". if ever you see a copy of prepared in peace (with the scary die-cutcover) grab it. it's brilliant.
Flying Circus were more than bubblegum, they were also probably Australia's first tribute band, doing Byrds covers, dressing the same, using the same instruments.
What's happened to the rest of it ????
There used to be the full clip of this on YouTube. Don't tell me they have taken it down for whatever reason.
Does anyone have the full clip ??

@Nuggniffer Not atypical at all; there's considerable similarities to Vanity Fair's song "Hitchin' a Ride."

They were not a bubblegum band. they were very much country rock. Hence the song was atypical for them, though not for the top 40 at that time.

Fully agree. Their single releases were just catchy commercial stuff but their albums showed a wide repertoire of covers and originals.
They were influenced by Byrds material and their interpretations of it were good.
