It is the "Baker" shot of operation "Crossroads" (25 VIII 1946) - arguably the most famous nuclear footage in the world. It was detonated 27 meters (90 foot) udder water and thats why it looks so spectacular. It was the very same 21-23kt design as the "Trinity"/"Fatman" and it's Soviet copy - "RDS-1"/"Joe-1". The underwater detonation caused a very contamination, especially to the target ships, but also affecting the task force, where the polluted water was partially carried by the currents.

I used to watch Spongebob as a kid. I didn't understand most the jokes until I watched it again years later. And I remember the episodes that used this footage. I didn't know what the footage was from. It took me until now to realize that was footage of the Bikini Atoll explosion. The island is how the term "Bikini Bottom" was coined. And Bikini Bottom is where Spongebob lives. Very clever! If only the new episodes were as good. :(
