25 July 1946, Baker underwater detonation from the "Operation Crossroads" series of nuclear tests (2 shots) using the same type of weapon as the one used at Trinity (Jul 16, 1945) & Nagasaki (9 Aug 1945). Little was known (then) about the extent of residual radioactivity & fallouts. The explosion lifted a 2-million ton core of water & sand in the atmosphere. The sound track was added since this clip was used over & over in various press/TV/film releases because of its spectacular appearance.
That was Mr. Krabs blowing his top after walking into the Krusty Krab, and found the boys,( Sponge Bob, Patric, & Squidward), re-modeling it into a western gay bar.
Lol... wow... showing the age difference here... first cartoon you some of you thought of was Spongebob.. I thought of Rocky and Bullwinkle "No bikini atoll"
It is the "Baker" shot of operation "Crossroads" (25 VIII 1946) - arguably the most famous nuclear footage in the world. It was detonated 27 meters (90 foot) udder water and thats why it looks so spectacular. It was the very same 21-23kt design as the "Trinity"/"Fatman" and it's Soviet copy - "RDS-1"/"Joe-1". The underwater detonation caused a very contamination, especially to the target ships, but also affecting the task force, where the polluted water was partially carried by the currents.
to all you idiots making jokes,we're not the only game in town anymore fellas.might wanna keep your bugout bag handy, and stay away from densely populated areas..uh huh.
I am sure someone else already pointed this out, but that isn't hardly Hiroshima. That is Shot Baker of Operation Crossroads - a 21 kiloton device detonated 90' underwater off of Bikini Atoll.
I'm not following the Hiroshima conversation anymore lol, but I'm just going to stand firm that its wrong to kill millions of people with a bomb. Also, Danebake, I'm not saying you're a bomb throwing madman lol, but you know... George bush... I wouldn't be suprised terribly if there were bomb throwing madmen in congress this very moment.
I used to watch Spongebob as a kid. I didn't understand most the jokes until I watched it again years later. And I remember the episodes that used this footage. I didn't know what the footage was from. It took me until now to realize that was footage of the Bikini Atoll explosion. The island is how the term "Bikini Bottom" was coined. And Bikini Bottom is where Spongebob lives. Very clever! If only the new episodes were as good. :(
The Bikini Atoll is in the Marshall Islands. Many of them migrate to the US mainland, due to poverty and nuclear radiation. Most of them come to my town. Every single one of them are fucking annoying. (Hint: Let's get rid of the rest of the problem ;D)
@lupes707: No. It's essentially the same bomb dropped on Nagasaki (Fat Man), only suspended underwater. In Bikini Atoll, not Hiroshima. Look up Crossroads/Baker.
Thats video not of Hiroshima. Its of Shot Baker. Part of a two part test we did in the Bikini Atol, during Operartion Crossroads. Shot Baker - we set off 90 meters below water, Shot Able - we set off 1,000 over the island.
The US Army didn't have to do this, BUT, it was the fastest way to end the war and could have saved millions of more lives then it took away in the bombings.
@legoman5188 Yea, kill them nips, wtf. Who's gonna miss a few 100k civilians? War is easily rationalized when it ain't you dying. If you lose both legs, an arm and an eye, and we win the war, is it good? $2200/month for ever and ever. Jackpot! Lotto win.
@55DepotStreet You're an idiot, if the war continued.. more people would've been dead.. A peace negotiation was impossible, either they surrender or the U.S. was going to bomb them in to oblivion... If I was the President I would rather sack 100k people and save potentially millions.. The bomb was only used as the lesser of two evils.. This was a case where there is no good option.. Next time when you open your mouth learn a little something about history.
@LordKrinkow This. Also, it wasn't just 200 thousand, it was millions of others that died afterwards from radiation and hundreds of thousands of babies and children effected after that from contaminated survivors.
@TheDragonrage25 They had signed a peace treaty, and fucked us over with pearl harbor, and it continued so the US was like "Fuck this shit," and A-bombed them.
@iamgodforreals the funny part is that a lot of these "commenters" didn't even realize that the Japanese attacked pearl harbor for absolutely no reason whatsoever.. What was the reason for the attack again? Oh that's right, the japnese didn't have any... They just wanted to drag the U.S. in to the war for lulz.. I bullshit you not, check your history..
@TheDragonrage25 Exactly, they deceived us by establishing a truce and acting as if they were our allies and they stabbed our backs and fucking killed thousands of soldiers at P.H.
@iamgodforreals: The death count was slightly more than 2400, 300 less than the twin tower attacks. What "truce" are you talking about? All of 1941 was a mounting policy assault on the west, that culminated in Pearl Harbor. Their only "stabbing in the back" was their not being polite enough to give us a two week warning.
@TheDragonrage25: That's just a bit deranged. They thought that knocking back the US would keep us out of their hair while they went and gathered up the pieces of their co-prosperity sphere. They didn't do it for 'no reason'; they very definitely had a plan.
@TheDragonrage25 I don't think so. This is not a matter of saving 'potential' lives. Its a matter of showing 'who's the boss' to the new upcoming enemy.
@TheDragonrage25 i hope you realize there is something called historical interpretation. revisionism has pointed out that the U.S more than likely dropped the bombs as warnings to the USSR antecedent to the cold war.
@TheDragonrage25 No. 200 thousand innocent people were vaporized instantly and 2 million more killed by radiation. Only 10 % or less where actual millitairy people.
@ElderadUlthran cool story.. but hydrogen atoms decay very fast, as a result.. within 24 hours after the bomb was drop, the radiation level was roughly 80% as powerful as the initial drop. This many years later, the presence of radiation is as minuscule as radiation from your tv.. In other words, stay in school.
Also that fact doesn't change history; Hundreds of thousands of people died in the initial dropping and then millions more in the years after, along with child deformities and death for years after that. Japanese killing 20 thousand or so people during the entire war does not give us the right to do that, with the addition of constant non-atomic killings and bombings the U.S. treated them to. Also, miniscule numbers actually died at pearl harbor...
@ElderadUlthran You should probably tell your parents to teach you a little more about chemistry.. the nature of hydrogen after a nuclear explosion will not allow the highly dangerous radiation to be sustained for longer than 5 months tops.. Therefore it is impossible for deformities and death to extend many years afterwards.. There should be absolutely zero presence of abnormal levels of radiation at the bomb sites due to half life decay of hydrogen...
@TheDragonrage25 Are you kidding? If somebody suffers radiation exposure then the chance of their offspring having deformities increases vastly, and then their children, and so on... Because the exposure was quite large and acute the statistical nature of studying the after effects is difficult however decades later it is undeniable that the small exposed population do suffer more from thyroid cancer (a very radiosensitive organ) and there are increased rates of birth deformities.
@TheDragonrage25: Ye gods, and you're asking him to learn more chemistry? Wikipedia is worlds ahead of where you are. The problem isn't hydrogen; it's neutron-activated things around the bomb and the plutonium fission products. The exposure can be immediate and also long range, the damage to life can be somatic (cancer and radiation sickness) or germ (mutations in offspring). Hydrogen radiation is minor, compared to Na24 (in sea water), K40, I137, Cs134 & 137, and so on.
@ElderadUlthran numbers killed at PH is irrelevant. Japan started the war, Japan could have stopped and surrendered at any time...we finished it. The fact that we "won" has nothing to do with how many Japan killed in the opening bell. You dont go around hitting someone bigger then you then cry that he hit you too hard back!! idiotic
@TheDragonrage25 ... Compared to the number of Japanese killed. According to Howard Zinn, the Japs were also going to surrender soon, so there was absolutely no reason to drop the bomb. On top of that, there was essentially no other combat on U.S. ground after pearl harbor! They tickled us so we went on some insane bloodlust path through Asia slaughtering un-counted thousands without stopping till the bomb dropped. Jap's never touched us again.
@ElderadUlthran Not really both japan and the allies couldn't reach an agreement.. Toyoda actually wanted to test the allies gut to drop the bomb.. The war needed to end swiftly due to the fact that maintaining an active and mobile army is extremely expensive.. Japan could've stalled forever and caused global economic issues.. Also we didn't go through "Asia" per-say, went went through Oceania islands to get through to Japan.. Also with your comment it sounds like you're anti-american..
@ElderadUlthran I would hardly call the unprovoked slaughter of 2,000 Americans a "tickle." What I can never understand about the guys who argue we should never have used the bomb is the fact that so many ignore what would have happened had we not. Yes many innocent civilians died, but think about how many more would have died in a largescale invasion of mainland Japan. Do you know what Japanese schoolgirls were trained to do in the event of an Allied invasion?
@parkourDrew4745619 What justification? It's called reasoning.. Whether you understand it or not is your own problem.. If you were the U.S., what would you do instead?
@TheDragonrage25 Yeah because killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people who had nothing to do with it is the smart choice you must of been brought up on sour milk
@parkourDrew4745619 Ok moron, what was the optional choice? Air raid, land raid, and order bombardments on Japan? That would totally work, but that would demolish several Japanese cities and not just Hiroshima and Nagasaki.. Japan would not listen to reason, remember they attacked the U.S. first.. They were determined to defeat us at all cost.. Hell a full on military assault on japan may not even work and may cost both sides massive unprecedented losses.
@TheDragonrage25 whilst the Russians invade & occupy the North of Japan, severly weakiening the US strategic position in the Pacific for the next fifty years of the up & coming Cold war, too. maybe.
@ellbo2 irrelevant as Suzuki refused to meet any of the allies demand.. He was literally hell bent on crushing the allies.. Even if the entire Postdam Declaration was written on a stone tablet in Japanese characters and dropped on his head, he would've still disregarded it and continue to fight the war..
@TheDragonrage25 at everyone, really, I didn't mean that killing 2000 Americans in P.H. was right, but obviously, even on the cold basis of numbers, killing 200,000 wasn't the best response. Yes I am anti-American. Yes I believe the price of war needs to be slashed enormously. Yes I believe we don't need to kill hundreds of thousands of people and millions more afterword to stop the war.
Also you don't seem to understand that that bomb cost hundreds of millions of dollars...
@ElderadUlthran: Ehhh? You "believe the price of war needs to be slashed enormously"? I don't. Raise it. Raise it to the skies, to the cost of maintaining a fleet of a thousand space shuttles, with launches at $500 million a pop every day. That is perhaps the only way to force "we can win this!" types to think that sometimes, sometimes there are more important considerations, and better, cheaper means.
seeing this any sane peace loving person will ask who would build something deadly destructive device like this? sick sociopaths with a god complex....or the DEVIL with a lot of vampire helpers

ElderadUlthran 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 No. 200 thousand innocent people were vaporized instantly and 2 million more killed by radiation. Only 10 % or less where actual millitairy people.
ElderadUlthran 3 months ago
@ElderadUlthran cool story.. but hydrogen atoms decay very fast, as a result.. within 24 hours after the bomb was drop, the radiation level was roughly 80% as powerful as the initial drop. This many years later, the presence of radiation is as minuscule as radiation from your tv.. In other words, stay in school.
TheDragonrage25 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 I'm homeschooled...
ElderadUlthran 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran You should probably tell your parents to teach you a little more about chemistry.. the nature of hydrogen after a nuclear explosion will not allow the highly dangerous radiation to be sustained for longer than 5 months tops.. Therefore it is impossible for deformities and death to extend many years afterwards.. There should be absolutely zero presence of abnormal levels of radiation at the bomb sites due to half life decay of hydrogen...
TheDragonrage25 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 Are you kidding? If somebody suffers radiation exposure then the chance of their offspring having deformities increases vastly, and then their children, and so on... Because the exposure was quite large and acute the statistical nature of studying the after effects is difficult however decades later it is undeniable that the small exposed population do suffer more from thyroid cancer (a very radiosensitive organ) and there are increased rates of birth deformities.
Andyman20k 2 months ago

You dont go around hitting someone bigger then you then cry that he hit you too hard back!! idiotic
edsmale 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran Also nice numbers.. they almost look like facts from propaganda.. or from being home-schooled.
TheDragonrage25 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 ... Compared to the number of Japanese killed. According to Howard Zinn, the Japs were also going to surrender soon, so there was absolutely no reason to drop the bomb. On top of that, there was essentially no other combat on U.S. ground after pearl harbor! They tickled us so we went on some insane bloodlust path through Asia slaughtering un-counted thousands without stopping till the bomb dropped. Jap's never touched us again.
ElderadUlthran 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran Not really both japan and the allies couldn't reach an agreement.. Toyoda actually wanted to test the allies gut to drop the bomb.. The war needed to end swiftly due to the fact that maintaining an active and mobile army is extremely expensive.. Japan could've stalled forever and caused global economic issues.. Also we didn't go through "Asia" per-say, went went through Oceania islands to get through to Japan.. Also with your comment it sounds like you're anti-american..

@ElderadUlthran discussing further against someone who has such extreme biases would be a pretty big waste of time...
TheDragonrage25 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran I would hardly call the unprovoked slaughter of 2,000 Americans a "tickle." What I can never understand about the guys who argue we should never have used the bomb is the fact that so many ignore what would have happened had we not. Yes many innocent civilians died, but think about how many more would have died in a largescale invasion of mainland Japan. Do you know what Japanese schoolgirls were trained to do in the event of an Allied invasion?
danebake 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran Lie. Plain and simple lie.
edsmale 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran: Show me some proof of the 2 million radiation deaths.
puncheex 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran care to back up those numbers with evidence? You know, something official that was published? Because 2 million is fantasy.
edsmale 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 you 2 are idiots to throw a nuke isnt ne right solution to win a war. amaricans and japans were stupid!!!!
Tirismystyle 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 That can't be justified no matter how you put it.
parkourDrew4745619 2 months ago
@parkourDrew4745619 What justification? It's called reasoning.. Whether you understand it or not is your own problem.. If you were the U.S., what would you do instead?
TheDragonrage25 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 Yeah because killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people who had nothing to do with it is the smart choice you must of been brought up on sour milk
parkourDrew4745619 2 months ago
@parkourDrew4745619 Ok moron, what was the optional choice? Air raid, land raid, and order bombardments on Japan? That would totally work, but that would demolish several Japanese cities and not just Hiroshima and Nagasaki.. Japan would not listen to reason, remember they attacked the U.S. first.. They were determined to defeat us at all cost.. Hell a full on military assault on japan may not even work and may cost both sides massive unprecedented losses.
TheDragonrage25 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 whilst the Russians invade & occupy the North of Japan, severly weakiening the US strategic position in the Pacific for the next fifty years of the up & coming Cold war, too. maybe.
RonnieJamesable 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 What if in the Potsdam declaration the US made their intentions with the emperor perfectly clear?
ellbo2 2 months ago
@ellbo2 irrelevant as Suzuki refused to meet any of the allies demand.. He was literally hell bent on crushing the allies.. Even if the entire Postdam Declaration was written on a stone tablet in Japanese characters and dropped on his head, he would've still disregarded it and continue to fight the war..
TheDragonrage25 2 months ago
@TheDragonrage25 at everyone, really, I didn't mean that killing 2000 Americans in P.H. was right, but obviously, even on the cold basis of numbers, killing 200,000 wasn't the best response. Yes I am anti-American. Yes I believe the price of war needs to be slashed enormously. Yes I believe we don't need to kill hundreds of thousands of people and millions more afterword to stop the war.
Also you don't seem to understand that that bomb cost hundreds of millions of dollars...
ElderadUlthran 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran: Ehhh? You "believe the price of war needs to be slashed enormously"? I don't. Raise it. Raise it to the skies, to the cost of maintaining a fleet of a thousand space shuttles, with launches at $500 million a pop every day. That is perhaps the only way to force "we can win this!" types to think that sometimes, sometimes there are more important considerations, and better, cheaper means.
puncheex 2 months ago
@ElderadUlthran so brainiac, here is your choice. NO WAR is not one of them because Japan already started it. #1 use
