I am an American and have been working and living in Sofia the last year and a half.I speak the language near fluently. Yes the country is poor but at the same time it is not. You have to give it to Bulgarians, They went through a lot of harsh times before and after the 90's and they are getting no their feet, slowly but surely they are getting better and better. The amount of development in Sofia is amazing. I just love walking the streets of Sofia and admiring the new and the old architecture.

Yes the roads may not be the best, it may not be the wealthiest country or the cleanest but they are trying and they are moving forward. There is originality in Bulgaria you will not see anymore in any part of Europe or the world and sadly, as Bulgaria is westernizing, the originality is disappearing. Bulgaria does have its bad points and these people are right but at the same time the people that speak highly of Bulgaria are right to because Bulgaria has so many nice points as well. I work at the Business park here in Sofia, make 4,000 Levas, which I can safely say is equivalent to a middle class American salary, but I make it in a country where the cost of living is twice less so yes, I do enjoy living here and I am happy here.

Oh, I was in Bulgaria this summer. This road is quit good. If you want to crash your car, please try the road to the Greece border to Burgas. Please remember: never cross the Bulgarian cities. The Bulgarian roads in their cities are worst roads I ever see.

Be sure that all their roads are the same. Don't risk your security - dam with their touristic offer. It is against your security.

i never said that bulgarians arent honest and warm but its a fact that almost the whole government consist of ppl who were in the STASI. and ive interacted with LOTS of bulgarians during my work and they arent happy with the circumstances at all. its cool that u like bulgaria, I also do, but I still say that its still got a very long way to go. nevertheless, the pupils i were able to teach were fricking awesome kids and full of ambition. far more ambitious than our pupils.... :/

Aspects may have improved but the country has a GNP of 2,740 dollars Per Capita. Where is this improvment? A life expectancy of 68. Please show me evidence of improvment.

first of all, get your info right. Bulgaria's GDP per capita(nominal)is around 4.400 dollars. Second of all, I never denied there are a lot of problems in BG but the situation is totally different in comparison to what we had back then in the 90s. Yes, there's still corruption and organized crime, but MUTRAS no longer have the leading position in our society and the control has improved due to many factors combined.

and, you said it- the political and economic crisis, combined with hyperinflation and the bankruptcy of the banking system did happen 11 years ago and all Eastern Europe went through similar, although definitely not that hard times. Well, it's 2007 now and the macro frame is totally different. It is high time we started constructively thinking about Bulgaria's quick recovery and I can assure you, the basis has already been achieved, despite ongoing corruption.
