God this song is amazing!! Check out my advanced piano cover of it! Comment to let me know what you think :) please give me thumbs up so people can see my cover :D
Anything better than a Gershwin song? A Gershwin song.... As Oscar Levant said" George if you had to do it all over again would you fall in love with yourself?"... Love it..
we're all indebted to the Gershwin brothers for providing the World with fantastic musical compositions, which have been used by countless thousands of musicians eversince...especially Art Tatum
I do hope the original film is well preserved and buried deep inside some climate controlled mountain somewhere ....With a TOP SECRET on the location!
Great footage of Gershwin performing - he does make it look easy! Thank you for posting. Considering what a great artist Gershwin was, it's amazing to me that the film/recording industry didn't produce some high-quality footage of him performing his own works. It could be that he simply didn't have time.
hey people.. pianomasterbrandon actually has a video of him playing this piece and its not bad at all.. its just much more simple than this arrangement obviously..
@wolfthehunter65 Ira was foremost a great lyracist who had a nearly-perfect symbiosis with his brother, George. They fed off each other's strengths to produce great songs. Ira did not read musical notation. George did not write lyrics. So your comment is somewhat idiotic.
The sheet music for this notates the part from 0:45 onwards in the key of F. In this video Gershwin plays it in G flat. Is it possible the video was sped up?
(Nothing against Gershwin btw -- his technique was fabulous. Just curious)
@cubsfan334 Two different cameras were recording at different speeds. The second was recording at a faster speed than the first. There used to be a video posted on youtube with the differing speeds corrected, but due to copyright violations or some crap, it was removed a little over a year ago. I have yet to find it elsewhere.
@cubsfan334 Re your comment on pitch change: the original video (the source of this video) which I was kindly given by Gershwin's biographer Edward Jablonski, has this same pitch change. It's caused by the two sound cameras running at different speeds, with an edited-in 4 bar repeat to try to disguise the awkward pitch change. You can see the original, unedited version with corrected pitch by searching "Gershwin plays I Got Rhythm (New York 1931)"
@pianomasterbrandon1 I find your statement incredibly dubious. You strike me as a kid with a mediocre talent at the piano who is trying to sound like a precocious, awe-inspiring child prodigy by down-playing the true complexity of this music, all under the veil of anonymity of youtube. If I'm wrong, please, show me and post your own video of you playing.
@pianomasterbrandon1 You miss the point; the thing is that not only did Gershwin write this piece and perform it with a lot more rhythmical verve than is common nowadays, but he seems to have added in a lot of improvised elements in this particular performance.
@pianomasterbrandon1 Don't even think for a nanosecond that your rendition comes close. You have a long way to go, and an inflated ego will not be your greatest asset.
@mcgoergl Gershwin had a brain tumor that went undiagnosed for a long time. By the time it was discovered, ti was too late to save him, as it was too far advanced.
This interpretation is amazing as a solo or instrumental. Although, C3POmeetsData has a point about this being rushed (If there were vocals included). In this setting, I think George's arrangement and energy are perfect. George Gershwin was heavily influenced by the jazz of the day; which on a piano would be stride. This piece, and many others of his, are perfect templates for stride piano.
Don't get me wrong, This is a beautiful interpretation, but it's not disrespectful to think he is not the best interpretor of his own work. He himself said that jazz and showtunes should not be rushed. Is a play-write the best actor in his own plays? Is an automotive engineer the best driver? How many famous song writers are there that were made famous by other people singing their songs? I'm just saying, this song would sound better on a different style.
@C3P0meetsData I agree. When you consider the history of this piece in totality, Merman, in her lyrical interpretation, is also a great force in making it so popular.
George and Ira produced some legendary tunes including this one. His piano playing on this is great. It's like Jerry Lee Lewis at times! :-) Really looking forward to the "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" CD in August as Wilson and Gershwin is fabulous combination of musical genius from different eras.
Wow, it's the first time I've seen video of Gershwin at the piano, what a treat! As with Rachmaninoff, there's just something special about hearing the composer play his own works.
@antoniodcz, I agree with you. I was mesmerized when I saw that the picture was actually moving! I have never seen him play, just heard him (I am a VERY big fan and I listen to him every morning) and I knew this was really rare!
