Thing is...Olivia was raised catholic. She said so back in 2007 when confronting Jeffery with the rape. She may have closed the door to her faith, but with Natalia....she was willing to give faith the benefit of the doubt.
When this first aired and I watched it, I thought that Olivia was meeting a lesbian named Anne, not a nun. LMAO Not quite sure what made me think that!!
There is so much good writing in this story, it's actually difficult to pick a favorite. I love the lines about 'God is love'. But I also like how they keep the humor in this bit by making us think that this was a date at first. The whole exchange about 'you're not what I expected' and 'we come in all shapes and sizes' is so funny. A definite nod to the LGBT fans. But much funnier since we are actually talking about a nun & religion instead of a lesbian & dating. This stuff is just so good!
I think for Liv, she felt that once she got Nat to marry Frank all of her feelings would stop. Instead, her desires have seemed to continued almost increased. "I need to not want what I cant have!"
Olivia wants to know the definition of 'good and bad' from the nun- funny that is what Natalia keeps saying she needs to be sure about what is 'good and bad'. Olivia is looking for the 'parameters' in religion... whether there is a 'loop hole' somewhere to 'condone' her feelings for Natalia and vice versa. Maybe if she finds out, she can talk about it with Natalia and 'make all her troubles go away'. if only it was that simple she thinks
"The more you give, the more you'll have". I love how by the end of their conversation, it wasn't that Olivia needed to take a class, or read a book to understand, but to know that God is love. Love it!
This is the first conversation Olivia has had that she hasn't shut down. Makes you wonder? Could Olivia be returning to the Catholicism of her youth to relate to Natalia more?
Olivia tells Sr. Ann that she does not understand why Natalia talks to the statues of Mary...but notice that now she is starting to do it too! Of course in her own way..... "What are you looking at?! [I think Mary will overlook her tone of voice and help her out]
Olivia has now kinda come out with about 1/2 a dozen people about her in-love feeling for a woman, and she hasn't even had a real kiss with Natalia. She's able to talk to everyone about her feeling except the one that really matters.
All roads lead to CC's eyes...she has beautiful eyes and the things she can do with them...bows to the Goddess. If only I could join the religion of the Goddess, Dimples and Jellybean - Amen. The Otalifarian Order. ;-)
I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one confused at first. I didn't think it was a date but that the woman might be with a gay rights group or maybe a lesbian therapist.
CC was brilliant as usual!! When she said she needed to not want what she couldn't have I wanted to reach thru the TV screen and hug her.
*in her best operatic voice* "Cliimb eeevery mountain, search high and looow, follow eeeeevery rainbow, til you find your dream". Follow that rainbow Olivia coz you alreadty found your dream! Don't throw it away! (ps if anyone were to do a Sound of Music/Otalia fanfic I would luv you forever!)
hersupremepinkness - you are the funniest! Now I can't get the image of Mother Abbess and Maria von Trapp out of my head. Frank as Baroness Elsa Schräder? :-) No...as I recall she actually realized the Baron was in love with Maria and bowed out gracefully. Natalia as Baron von Trapp!! Nice genderbending imagery.
Yes! And Frank as the Baroness Schrader! Can't you just see him in that red taffeta gown (ew, maybe not), the feisty Olivia and Emma dressed in 'some old drapes' and Natalia as the Captain hiding her emotions behind routine and bottling her feelings up! Where is that damn pine cone when you need it?!
Alan Spaulding as one of the evil Nazis! Doris could play a double agent Nazi who turns out good in the end! Otalia the Musical!! Lol! They had a Bad Girls the Musical - never saw it unfortunately!
LMAO, I love Olivia, she cracks me up: 'oh, i don't want to be a nun, i love sex!' hahaha, so funny...
And I do agree, at the beginning I thought it was like a blind date too, I was like WTF?? cheeky writers did it on purpose :) but I did like how it came out, her talk with the nun..it was touching.
Ha ha, anyone notice the eyes widened in shock when Frank told Remy and Christina "the good news"! LOL..Nat told Remy like two weeks ago, that she didn't love Frank and had meaningless sex w/ him..and of course Cristina is a regular at the FoL...loved their reaction..
"REALLY?!?..let me see the ring!(what do I say now?)"
Anyone else think Olivia was on some sort of date with the nun? There was strange flirty tension or something going on. I was so extra confused! I run on the treadmill when I watch the show and just about fell off because I was yelling at the screen, "wtf! what is this?! what's going on?!" Actually, this whole ep had me falling off from yelling at the screen... I'm frakkin' sick of seeing Crazy Eyes Furter touch my Natalia... bleck!
i couldn't believe she said that but it was too funny lol:) but olivia has a knack for doing and saying funny yet unpredictable things:) only she could pull that off and it not be like she's going out of her way to shock the nun lol:)
See, I'm just like Liv. All I think of when someone mentions religion it's the judgmental aspect that I immediately revert to and completely separate myself from it because of that. I'm learning though...and I hope that I can find faith in something and be comfortable with it.
I think Olivia went to see that nun for Emma as well as for Natalia b/c of what Phillip said about her not getting any of the sweetness/kindness from them. I think it was a little bit of Emma and a lot of Natalia as to why Olivia called the Nun.
I agree allison6071 that what Phillip said about Emma really moved Olivia and tore her heart up in pieces all over again at the thought of losing Nat.
Okay I really thought for a moment there that Olivia was on a date with a woman but talking to a nun well that was new. Notice how Frank just wants to shout the exciting news about him and Nat, I am really going to feel so bad for him when Nat and Liv come together.
Ooops GL's first mistake the nun is wearing a ring that looks like a wedding band in 4:14. Nuns can't get married or is there a new nun handbook I don't know anything about?
Nun's are married to Christ. Depending on the order, Women have a 5 year probationary period to live and serve as nun. During this period, they wear a silver band. After that period, if order and the woman herself choses she can officially become a nun. During the ceremony, she recieves a gold band to signify her devotion and comittment to Christ.
Wow I just finished watching this scene completely for the 1st time and I'm actually tearing up! I SOOO wish someone had told me that when I was struggling w/my love for a woman. Coming from such a religious background this would have saved me so much pain and heartache! This is my all time favorite scene so far. This is truly amazing! I wish I could personally thank the writers for this scene. I'm definitely calling tomorrow to the cbs hotline to let them know how wonderful it is!
I am repeatedly blown away by the care that is going into this story -- amazingly sensitive and astute writing, attention to really subtle details, and of course consistently good acting.
So many of you have already spoken so eloquently about this. I'm not saying anything new -- i just wanted to add my voice to the chorus!
Thx, Allison, for re-posting the Guiding Light call line -- 866-695-1859 . You're right -- we know what kind of awful calls they are getting, and with Proctor and Gamble's underwriting in limbo, it's probably crucial that we call early and often :)
You're welcome I heard the number in the podcast over the weekend. I think Destini and her team have had a hand in helping w/this s/l's popularity and I am so appreciative for all they do. You are so right I'm sure they are getting all the negative calls so we need to blow them up w/our calls about how much we love Otalia. We need to have an Otalia conference...lol
"God is Love, Olivia, and so are relationships, especially the worthwhile ones." Is that pretty little nun telling Olivia that Love trumps EVERYTHING? Olivia go rescue your fair maiden; she loves you too! GO NOW!!!! LOL
haha a nun lol.......I love the nun's face when she said what are you confused about Olivia......omg when she said "I just need to not want what I can't have" wow CC did some amazing acting there 'cause that voice just broke my heart.....it was so sad and desperate but in a good way not a pathetic way.....that nun is way cool.....damn she's the only one that fictional town who can tell Olivia is hurting
not sure i'd agree, she was pretty candid with doris, she just ran away when doris tried to help her feel better about her feelings.
if she was more open with the nun, it was probably because the nun wouldn't know what she was really talking about... at least that's what liv might assume. though i thought the nun did know.
i do hope Natalia finds out about Olivias visit to the nun. that's definitely love. especially with how Olivia used to make fun of Natalias faith. What a scene that would be. Olivias making all the changes because she wants too and it feels right and frank is reaping all the benefits cause he's a guy. not fair. well really all liv has to do is speak up like frank did...He told Natalia He loved her. Olivia its your damn turn.
Okay I am so addicted I watched again. When Olivia says, "I don't want what I can't have." Oh my heart breaks everytime. CC is the best, and the writing is inspired.
Great fake out! They totally had me going there for a second.
Boy is Liv looking at Natalia through rose-colored glasses here. Nat's faith isn't exactly helping her do the right thing in this case--marrying a man she doesn't love.
i love that they TOTALLY played us with the nun scene. they stretched out the possibility of it being a blind date for as long as they could! hilarious.
yes, that was the dialogue...except that Anne looks and dresses just like every single nun I know [ which is quite a few]...and even the hair style and lack of makeup and jewelry is spot on. [Except in real like she prob. would have a cross somewhere - nun iconography]. When she walked in I thought "what is a nun doing at Towers?' It is kind of what people think lesbians will look like. Then I thought - "wow maybe she is a psychotherapist". That was a more shocking thought to me!
WOW. CC is breathtaking AND amazing! In just one scene she portrays Olivia as funny, reflective, vulnerable and loving. The writers handled this scene with care. Anne is clearly not entirely comfortable with Olivia's admission, but she is also not all about hellfire and damnation either.
You know, nuns deal with this kind of thing all the time. When someone thinks they have a vocation to be in a religious order, they spend a great deal of time examining their own feelings about it. They spend several years as a novice b4 taking a final vow. No small number of women over the years have entered a convent to try to escape lesbian feelings they can't cope with. Nuns know to look for that. It is "not the right reason" to join, as Anne obliquely said. She knew what was up.
Also, some lesbians have a genuine vocation and become nuns for the "right reason". They agree to be celibate just like their straight sisters do. [It must be really tough though]. Ann herself could be one of those for all we know! She was pretty cool.
I think this might be Olivia greatest show of affection toward Natalia to date--Liv's willingness to learn about her faith is a very big deal and, should Natalia ever find out, it's going to mean a lot to her. That is love.
Oh great the "couple to be"... I guess they want to share the bad news with everyone! Hee hee! Wow! Olivia is looking radiant in that black and white outfit! Totally yummy!! A NUN?? DAMN I WAS HOPING SHE WOULD BE A LESBIAN!! Ha! You know Olivia next conquest... ;-)) Yeah! And that nun has quite a 'shape and size!!" She's a knock-out!! And I should know because I went to Catholic schools! Well I guess if Olivia is not getting nun/none...Why not become one?! Ha! Great advice she gave her too!!
Love this scene. Up there with the Doris one as my all time fav. Writing/acting - amazing. Liv is just so beautiful in this. The writers are going for it. How can Nat not love this woman completely?
Frank is the door being shut on Olivia's foot! Now her attention is focussed she can stop holding back and fight for Nat.. Even the nun said love is worthwhile relationships! Come on Olivia, she gave you a green light from god!! :)
Liv had weight off her shoulders after that because the way she spoke to Nat about not having a friend like her, like she was having a 'in' joke between her and Nat and not apologising for it, or running from it, or even thinking about Frank. Not that he'd notice!
Wow, simply wow! I'm never going to be able to give up my addiction to this storyline if they keep producing such quality material. Bravo GL. Off to write another letter to the TPTB.
You know there's a GL callback line! It's 866-695-1859 we all need to call everyday from home, work, cell heck even pay phones to let them know how much we enjoy this s/l b/c I'm sure the people who are against it are calling and writing and we definitely want to out weigh them so we can keep Otalia on this road of couplehood and good writing. So EVERYONE PLEASE CALL!!!
I called GL. Thanks for the number. The lady on the phone was so sweat. I also wrote to them, TWICE. I can't believe that I have actually called and wrote letters to a TV station about a program. That is so out of character for me. I guess like Olivia, love has taken OVER.
Wow the scene between Liv and Anne was absolutely brilliant. The part about the foot in the door is exactly the right way to describe the Otalia situation. The door is being shut but they have the power to keep it from closing. Liv should have ran home and flung the door open to the FOL and then flung Frank off Nat. But I know, wasnt going to happen, but we all know Otalia is.ENDGAME *says in giddy TOEPICK tone* For those of you who know the movie The Cutting Edge. Random throwback I know.
Just after saying "What are you confused about?" the nun paused before saying Olivia exactly the same way Doris did when she said "are you lesbian... Olivia?"
Olivia asked the nun what was "good"..using the same word Natalia used on the night she said yes to Frank. Funny to see Olivia drink coffee instead of a martini! Great scene between the nun and Olivia....she definitely is pointing Olivia in the right direction. Thank you Otaliafan for the uploads :-)
Omg, I'm tearing up... That was so sweet and loving. Olivia has truly been transformed by her love for Natalia, and the writing in this scene was beautiful. I think the Nun knew what Olivia was really saying and to state what is the best thing about religion, "God is Love" was such an inspiring msg.
GL should so win a GLAAD award. The writers are taking the best parts of religion and love and showing the hopeful and loving side, and not going for the obvious scandelous judgemental view.
You are so right, the writers are handling this SO well. They are going to help a lot of religious conservatives come to a better understanding of same sex relationships and families. And people of faith in such relationships. I'm raging atheist but even I think God is Love after all this GL!!! Otalia is Love!!!
I don't like to read the spoilers so I didn't know about the Nun. My first thought was that Liv was on a date, and I thought , OH GRREAT!..... Another dimwit to get in the way of THE PERFECT UNION! :-/...... Then I watched the rest and my blood pressure went back down :-D
Good grief! Is GL in some competition today for Most Sexist Episode of the Year?!? On the flip side, the part with Olivia was unbelievably poignant and beautiful. One of the best written scenes I've ever seen about the subject. How amazing to see the depth of Olivia's love this way - actually seeking out a nun to better understand and care for Natalia. My heart's a-fluttering over this one....
Yes, the conversation between Olivia & the nun was enlightening on many levels--it spoke volumes in its brevity. It was subtle & lacked a preachy tone, & the "L" word was never mentioned (but understood). And, it also showed a side of the clergy that is human & in touch with its flock. Very tastefully done.
Haha, yeah the script made it sound like some variation of that...but here's something I never thought I'd say, I love this nun! This is a really good conversation for Liv.
Thing is...Olivia was raised catholic. She said so back in 2007 when confronting Jeffery with the rape. She may have closed the door to her faith, but with Natalia....she was willing to give faith the benefit of the doubt.

"God is Love, Olivia, and so are relationships, especially the worthwhile ones." Is that pretty little nun telling Olivia that Love trumps EVERYTHING? Olivia go rescue your fair maiden; she loves you too! GO NOW!!!! LOL

CC is WOW in this scene the way she talks about Nat.
niktiera 2 years ago
haha a nun lol.......I love the nun's face when she said what are you confused about Olivia......omg when she said "I just need to not want what I can't have" wow CC did some amazing acting there 'cause that voice just broke my heart.....it was so sad and desperate but in a good way not a pathetic way.....that nun is way cool.....damn she's the only one that fictional town who can tell Olivia is hurting
xcountrygrl 2 years ago 9
you're forgetting doris... she knows all too well how much liv is hurting
bosyeux2 2 years ago
that's true but I think Olivia was more open with the nun at least emotionally if not verbally
xcountrygrl 2 years ago
not sure i'd agree, she was pretty candid with doris, she just ran away when doris tried to help her feel better about her feelings.
if she was more open with the nun, it was probably because the nun wouldn't know what she was really talking about... at least that's what liv might assume. though i thought the nun did know.
bosyeux2 2 years ago
i do hope Natalia finds out about Olivias visit to the nun. that's definitely love. especially with how Olivia used to make fun of Natalias faith.

CC is the best, and the writing is inspired.
giasony99 2 years ago 5
Great fake out! They totally had me going there for a second.
Boy is Liv looking at Natalia through rose-colored glasses here. Nat's faith isn't exactly helping her do the right thing in this case--marrying a man she doesn't love.
attagrrrl 2 years ago
i love that they TOTALLY played us with the nun scene. they stretched out the possibility of it being a blind date for as long as they could! hilarious.
leftistliberalfreak 2 years ago 4
yes, that was the dialogue...except that Anne looks and dresses just like every single nun I know [ which is quite a few]...and even the hair style and lack of makeup and jewelry is spot on. [Except in real like she prob. would have a cross somewhere - nun iconography]. When she walked in I thought "what is a nun doing at Towers?' It is kind of what people think lesbians will look like. Then I thought - "wow maybe she is a psychotherapist". That was a more shocking thought to me!

nctodc...great comment...I agree completely that her trying to learn more about her faith is LOVE

I think it's cool that the nun knew she was talking about wanting Natalia...and gave her the okay

Crystal looks stunning in this scene...I love the detail of Olivia dressed in black and white to meet the nun.

This is so beautiful ..writing and acting
Olivia so soft and in love
SunEarthEva 2 years ago 5
WOW. CC is breathtaking AND amazing! In just one scene she portrays Olivia as funny, reflective, vulnerable and loving. The writers handled this scene with care. Anne is clearly not entirely comfortable with Olivia's admission, but she is also not all about hellfire and damnation either.
abbysmom77 2 years ago 9
lol to me it seems like nun anne knew EXACTLY what olivia was going through..she was completely tearing up at one point..
ashval08 2 years ago 2
You know, nuns deal with this kind of thing all the time. When someone thinks they have a vocation to be in a religious order, they spend a great deal of time examining their own feelings about it. They spend several years as a novice b4 taking a final vow. No small number of women over the years have entered a convent to try to escape lesbian feelings they can't cope with. Nuns know to look for that. It is "not the right reason" to join, as Anne obliquely said. She knew what was up.
jbear43000 2 years ago
Also, some lesbians have a genuine vocation and become nuns for the "right reason". They agree to be celibate just like their straight sisters do. [It must be really tough though]. Ann herself could be one of those for all we know! She was pretty cool.
jbear43000 2 years ago

Stephanieml33 2 years ago 2
Love this scene. Up there with the Doris one as my all time fav. Writing/acting - amazing. Liv is just so beautiful in this. The writers are going for it. How can Nat not love this woman completely?
tottie007 2 years ago 6
Frank is the door being shut on Olivia's foot! Now her attention is focussed she can stop holding back and fight for Nat.. Even the nun said love is worthwhile relationships! Come on Olivia, she gave you a green light from god!! :)
Liv had weight off her shoulders after that because the way she spoke to Nat about not having a friend like her, like she was having a 'in' joke between her and Nat and not apologising for it, or running from it, or even thinking about Frank. Not that he'd notice!
scoop909 2 years ago 3
I think they could make out in front of him and he still wouldn't notice.

GL surprised me with Olivia seeking a nun out for a serious talk Having Olivia do that instead of Natalia was brilliant.
tvcat1 2 years ago 10
The great GL nun scene - will go down in soap history for sure...
03hazelfish11 2 years ago 8
I'm sure Olivia would have much rather had coffee from Natalia had she not been ushered out of the door by the doe-eyed buffoon that is Frank.
But regardless, I enjoyed this conversation. It was very...earnest. And haha, I thought it was a blind date too.

So EVERYONE PLEASE CALL!!!
allison6071 2 years ago
I called GL. Thanks for the number. The lady on the phone was so sweat. I also wrote to them, TWICE. I can't believe that I have actually called and wrote letters to a TV station about a program. That is so out of character for me. I guess like Olivia, love has taken OVER.

is there part 4?
kokikoki19 2 years ago

Olivia?"
Intentional?

"Oh noo.. I don't want to be a nun. I like sex."
I couldn't stop laughing for 10 mins. She said it so seriously!
I also thought it was a blind date.
gheekchik1 2 years ago 3
Olivia asked the nun what was "good"..using the same word Natalia used on the night she said yes to Frank. Funny to see Olivia drink coffee instead of a martini! Great scene between the nun and Olivia....she definitely is pointing Olivia in the right direction. Thank you Otaliafan for the uploads :-)
renville68 2 years ago
Omg, I'm tearing up... That was so sweet and loving. Olivia has truly been transformed by her love for Natalia, and the writing in this scene was beautiful. I think the Nun knew what Olivia was really saying and to state what is the best thing about religion, "God is Love" was such an inspiring msg.
GL should so win a GLAAD award. The writers are taking the best parts of religion and love and showing the hopeful and loving side, and not going for the obvious scandelous judgemental view.
giasony99 2 years ago 17
You are so right, the writers are handling this SO well. They are going to help a lot of religious conservatives come to a better understanding of same sex relationships and families. And people of faith in such relationships. I'm raging atheist but even I think God is Love after all this GL!!! Otalia is Love!!!
hersupremepinkness 2 years ago 5
I don't like to read the spoilers so I didn't know about the Nun. My first thought was that Liv was on a date, and I thought , OH GRREAT!..... Another dimwit to get in the way of THE PERFECT UNION! :-/...... Then I watched the rest and my blood pressure went back down :-D
bcg2203 2 years ago
Erikatica 2 years ago 11
Yes, the conversation between Olivia & the nun was enlightening on many levels--it spoke volumes in its brevity. It was subtle & lacked a preachy tone, & the "L" word was never mentioned (but understood). And, it also showed a side of the clergy that is human & in touch with its flock. Very tastefully done.
