  • Thank You for posting this My Father is the piano player Nat Pierce I was way to young to appreciate what it was that he did for a living ,,,,,now that he is gone it's so nice to see him RIP dad

*The JazzWest cover lists only 3 Tpts: Bill Chase, Dave Gale, Billy Hunt

  • real swell man i is digging this daddio smooooth

  • All of the Herman videos are after the Bill Harris era. He played the best tronbone ever and was such an interesting character. I wish I could find more info on him.

  • Thanks for posting this music from a great band & such a great man !

  • One of Woody's best pieces, from what is surely his best album, "Woody Herman - 1963." That Bill Chase chart swings like a ten-foot chandelier and jumps like a swordfish.

  • I've never noticed anyone's neck expand the way Bill Chase's does. Man, he must have put put every ounce of energy into that horn! BTW, what does Sal find so amusing? Cracks me up!

  • maybe you can help me. I JUST heard a Woody Herman song on the radio. It was from the album "Keep the Torchlighht Burning." It had a lot of scat and vibes toward the end. Any idea what song this might be?

  • @toonsmyth I think it's "Lemon Drop", from the December 29, 1948 session.

  • Is it correct that Bill Chase arranged this?

  • billy hunt is good friends with my jazz band teacher.. they play shows together and because of that, i now own two of Billy Hunt's personal trumpets.. A Getzen ''Doc Severinsen'' and a Bach Strad.. two amazing trumpets with history..

  • Fantastic video. I am Jerry Lamy's cousin and have been trying to find him. If vegaskissme (Jerry is his/her dad) sees this comment, please contact me. Thanks a million.

  • During Bill Chase's electrifying solo, Woody - in background - calls to the mind the Steely Dan lyric in the tune Gaucho: "Snapping his fingers like a fool...."

That said, I'm a huge Woody fan - probably bought at least 20 LP's, over the past @# decades. And, of course, the Thundering Herd is featured prominently on StradMan37 & davidpockettrpt Big Bands Playlists here!

    Thanks for posting!

  • Cool I saw Sal Nistico at the theatre in Victoria London with woody herman. He was fantastic then and so young too! Dusko was the bestest of the new trumpet players..If hes still alive give him my best huh?

  • he's got a dizzy gillespie style trumpet o.o

  • Bill Chase lead trpt.

    2 trpt?

    3 trpt?

    4 trpt?

    5 trpt?

  • 2 trpt - Jerry Lamy (MY DAD!)

  • Jea,man...

My teacher name is Dusko Gojkovic.....

He playd with Your dad...and Bill Chase,Don Radder,Bobby Shew!

  • Yeah, vegaskissme, your dad, Jerry Lamy, was an awesome trumpet player! Most people (even diehard Herman fans) never knew he split the lead and played on top of that powerful section while Bill Chase rested. I understand he retired here in Vegas to drive an airport limo for a living...Wish he would have kept playing...I would have loved to play in a section with him! I think the others were Paul Fontaine, Billy Hunt and Dave Gale on this video. Dusko came in later, after elaving MF's band in '65

  • does your dad still play??

  • This is the tune that got me into jazz! I was a beginning sax player in 1966 and stumbled on Wood Hermans album of 1963 in my grandparents record cabinet. When I heard this song and Sal's solos I knew there was more to music and have spent the last 42 years going for it.

Thanks for the video of a tune I have listened to for the last forty-two years.

  • @saxhonkinhogger I too am a recovering saxophoner & feel your pain. I remember listening to Woody Herman records on my grandpa's console stereo. I had the privilege of attending a clinic at Del City High School when I was in Jr. High in the early 70's. It was one of the high points of my musical life for sure. It was nice that someone as famous & great as Mr. H. gave back like he did. I always had extra great respect for him after that. Thanks BCDS for keeping his music alive & accessible.
