Actually, EMG proves that a grip at roughly shoulder width elicits the maximum possible response from the triceps. You can't see exactly where his hands are in relation to his shoulders, however.
Yeah, it's close grip. His regular grip was substantially wider. Close grip for powerlifters is usually about as wide as the torso, not any closer. If you go any closer you don't get any added benefit, but you set yourself up for serious wrist injuries.
If you trained for a long time with a wider grip, you'd get better at it. A lot of people are good with a narrower grip at first. Almost all of the kids I coach start out with a grip that's about as wide as what Ed uses in this video.
@Ludichris8531 i started out benching with a wider grip, used it for about a year. then i decided to try close grips for a bit to help out my bench and found out im actually stronger on them. no idea, i feel tighter with it and feel stronger when i dont feel that stretch in my chest. i use both wide and close now as part of my training
man i would disagree with you man i do alot of the same exercise but for the bench and alot of my exercise i will change them for the bench i change the triceps and bench workout and go from suit squats to raw but i feel you need to change your exercises now and again not only is it boring but your muscles get used to the same thing changeing it keeps you growning even changing the order
im guessing because he has a plan and isn't going for maxreps every workout. alot of people max out too often and don't make progress because they arent willing to take one step back to go two steps forward.
The chest is very engaged at the start of the press. Most powerlifters don't like to admit it, but it has been proven in studies. Ideal situation would be less involvement from the chest, and more from the lats, etc., but it isn't so.
Is that why powerlifters always do fast heavy flies for rear delts? I am new to power lifting, and I have heard that before, but I never understood fully why it was important for rear delts to be strong. If you could explain, thatd be awesome. Thanks.
Rear delt flyes are to make sure there is not an imbalance in the shoulder girdle, which happens to most lifters, and can cause injury and take pounds away from your bench. The rear delts stabilizie while the front delts mobilize.
Lats play a large part if you do it right its chest shoulder triceps lats and the way i do it on my tipy toes i feel it in my front quads and lower back in the press part

Let me educate everyone including Ed Coan and a hundred other elite lifters.
There are reg grip bench, close grip bench, and narrow grip bench. most power lifters will benefit from narrow grip bench as the allow you to use more weight and hit the triceps, without beating up your elbows.
most power lifters do narrow grip benches and call them close grip.
I get my hands a lot closer together when i do close grip bench..... close grip is way harder then normal, but my normal bench press is about the same as the guy in the video to be honest... if im wider it's not by much at all

Actually Ed did get done for steroids. Even today there is great divison over whether or not Ed was a true great, or a cheater who damaged the sport's reputation.
I can't stand ignorant comments anymore! All you dip!@#&s that blast these lifters for steriods. I admittedly have never used drugs yet am approaching a RAW bench, but drugs or not these guys are sweating their balls off like the rest of us. Ed Coan is as much a legend in this sport as Babe Ruth, Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Pele, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Quit your ignorant spewing on these guys b/c of juice, it's a choice and a known FACT that "ALL" the tops guys use - SO WHAT!!!
damn right dakchad74! its always the bodybuilders and lifters who get steroids comments all the time, people completely ignore the fact that performance enhancers are used accross the board when it comes to sports, don't see anyone slating world class sprinters for the same reason do we? Shame can't write a mass message to everyone on youtube that wants to put "ooo, ooo, ooo, steroids!!!" under every single fucking weights post there is.
what amazes me on here is why a bunch of nobodys are gonna question a champion and a ceritified legend about his technique, now that to me is fucking amazing
the grip isn't that close but remember close grips aren't as much about where your hands are as they are where your elbows point when you lower the bar, if your elbows are pointing downwards towards your feet as opposed to out to the sides that's considered more of a close grip bench in todays powerlifting circles.
Shit I just thought getting this off the stand and having it rest on me for a couple secs was a feat of strength...this guy is beast.

It also depends on technique and stuff, and your strength and size of your other muscles, but chest is very active during benching.
That's probably why when people start lifting, their chest is one of the first things to get big.

You don't want your front delts to take much of the load. Your rear delts should take the load as far as your shoulders go.

A powerlifter uses his back, shoulders and triceps when benching. There is very little chest involved.
