Judo guys tend to be physically much stronger than BJJ guys. This allows the Judo guy to take superior positions and dictate where the fight goes (also w/ their superior takedowns which is 75% of Judo). What a lot of ppl don't understand is Judo also has a lot of submissions. many submissions used in BJJ originated from Judo and Japanese JJ. Some forms of Judo only focus on throws and trips, while others focus a lot on submissions as well.

He is a combination of Kodokan and Kosen.... in end, he is a true and pure Judoka that has unbelievable nage-waza (standing) and ne-waza (ground grappling). Yoshida can be compared to sensei Kimura for the balance of 50/50 (standup / ground) that is taught to pure Judokas.

In Judo we learn to let go of choke once person goes limp. if you never been choked out you would not know. if one is not protecting neck or fighting back it would be insane to wait for a person to tap if they may be dying.

I learned that same Gi choke from my Judo instructor when I was 10years old, in 1980. BJJ was nowhere to be found in the USA. It was all Japanese & Korean arts! Even KungFu was taking a back seat to JeetKuneDo. Japan has always taken other cultures and adopted them as their own for centuries, including Chinese martial arts. Sure, the Gracies have added a few techniques, but what grandmaster you know hasn't done that? I have known 5 grandmasters personally, and that is what they do.

In conclusion, it appears the referee made a mistake, albeit the safe call to protect Royce, You can't blame the ref for erring on the side of caution, and if it was a good choke I count almost 15 seconds of application.

NOT FAIR!! for those of you unaware of the ancient arts BJJ has contributed to Kosen Judo and this video is evidence of it. Royce clearly applies the technique of 'pretending to be unconcious' and then follows that up with a swift "complain like crazy after you lose". Kosen Judo never had either of these techniques before BJJ came along and there needs to be recognition of this.
I think that the anniversary of this fight is a day of mourning on the "Bullshido" site--after all in their religion, there are only two valid martial arts, Thai Boxing and BJJ.
I watched it closely he choked him out. See how Royce's legs weakened making Yoshida pass guard. Royce was stopping him in halfguard see closely. Yoshida got his weight in the choke. There is no clear way or leverage to sweep more so pretending then a swift. Choke would be tighter and position of Yoshida would be in a more dominant position.
Why the Gracies talked trash about Judo when their style is Judo (Kosen) I'll never understand. They paid here. The Gracies either duck all serious competition like when Royce exited the UFC instead of fighting Severn again, or Don Frye, Coleman in his prime, Maurice Smith, etc...etc...Rickson ducked Ruas, Bas Rutten, fedor, Gokor, (even though Bas publicly called him out in Pride?) Then they say BJJ doesn't take strength and Royce pops for DECA?
Reguardless of who is on whos side and whats better... in this particular instance the referee made the correct call. Royce could not escape and was showing no sign of doing so. Chokes can go on in around 5 seconds and there was no way for the ref to see how tight it was. He stopped the fight when royce relaxed. IMO royce relaxed to slow adrenalin and decrease oxygen need for his body so he could last a bit longer but he should have at least made a signal that he was ok
I still believe that was a fair victory for Yoshida. And it was a hammer choke, not a gi choke. He would have one hand go over the other with a gi choke.
This video shows us who the true masters of the art of grappling are. Pay some fucking respect to the Japanese for creating "your" art, Gracies. I think the BJJ logo should contain the words "Made in Japan".

He is a combination of Kodokan and Kosen.... in end, he is a true and pure Judoka that has unbelievable nage-waza (standing) and ne-waza (ground grappling). Yoshida can be compared to sensei Kimura for the balance of 50/50 (standup / ground) that is taught to pure Judokas.

@skate4life890 He got choked out. I had this argument and discussion with my BJJ Gracie friends, if you been choked out you wont know it that is why ref is there. In Judo we learn to let go of choke once person goes limp. if you never been choked out you would not know. if one is not protecting neck or fighting back it would be insane to wait for a person to tap if they may be dying.

I learned that same Gi choke from my Judo instructor when I was 10years old, in 1980. BJJ was nowhere to be found in the USA. It was all Japanese & Korean arts! Even KungFu was taking a back seat to JeetKuneDo. Japan has always taken other cultures and adopted them as their own for centuries, including Chinese martial arts. Sure, the Gracies have added a few techniques, but what grandmaster you know hasn't done that? I have known 5 grandmasters personally, and that is what they do.

I also never see his limbs go limp, his hand does seem to relax, possibly as a result of one artery being cut off (makes you a bit dizzy) also notice his foot pointing up to and flexed, maintaining a 1/2 butterfly guard of sorts. In conclusion, it appears the referee made a mistake, albeit the safe call to protect Royce, You can't blame the ref for erring on the side of caution, and if it was a good choke I count almost 15 seconds of application.

LOL, funny how the Gracie's say that their system is the best, but as soon as they fight another submission fighter and lose they say its because they know Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Gracie family got famous fighting a bunch of bums who don't know how to grapple. I don't think Royce Gracie is even that good, I mean the only time you see him do well is against bums and when he has his gi on. Which should not be allowed in competition because it can be used as a tool to submit opponents.

NOT FAIR!! for those of you unaware of the ancient arts BJJ has contributed to Kosen Judo and this video is evidence of it. Royce clearly applies the technique of 'pretending to be unconcious' and then follows that up with a swift "complain like crazy after you lose". Kosen Judo never had either of these techniques before BJJ came along and there needs to be recognition of this.

I watched it closely he choked him out. See how Royce's legs weakened making Yoshida pass guard. Royce was stopping him in halfguard see closely. Yoshida got his weight in the choke. There is no clear way or leverage to sweep more so pretending then a swift. Choke would be tighter and position of Yoshida would be in a more dominant position.

Why the Gracies talked trash about Judo when their style is Judo (Kosen) I'll never understand. They paid here. The Gracies either duck all serious competition like when Royce exited the UFC instead of fighting Severn again, or Don Frye, Coleman in his prime, Maurice Smith, etc...etc...Rickson ducked Ruas, Bas Rutten, fedor, Gokor, (even though Bas publicly called him out in Pride?) Then they say BJJ doesn't take strength and Royce pops for DECA?

Reguardless of who is on whos side and whats better... in this particular instance the referee made the correct call. Royce could not escape and was showing no sign of doing so. Chokes can go on in around 5 seconds and there was no way for the ref to see how tight it was. He stopped the fight when royce relaxed. IMO royce relaxed to slow adrenalin and decrease oxygen need for his body so he could last a bit longer but he should have at least made a signal that he was ok
