I watch the Kennedy Centers honor EVERY year. I used to set my VCR to record it and now it's on my DVR. In all of the years I've enjoyed this program I've never seen nor heard a more beautiful tribute to one of the honored recipients. Truly moving and breath taking. I replay this often to remind my self of the glory of harmony.
- Those little boys are sooo CUTE!! I think the Kennedy Center did a wonderful job honoring my hero. And what the hell is the big deal with Diana Ross handing Brian a beach ball? Why would someone get mad about that- she smiled at him the whole time she didn't mean anything bad by it im sure- I don't get it...
but anyways, i love each and every song that Tom had sung. i've been a die-hard libera fan because of him and i loved his distinctive voice! for some, he may not have sounded as perfect as his other live performances but man, he delivered! i think it was the (alto) lower voicing that irked me bec. it was too loud. who was it anyway?
mr. wilson must have been so proud to hear his own song being sung by a grandiose choir groups!
"Wispy" or "whispery" may be acceptable, even preferred, for some Libera voices, but not so much for Tom who has spoiled us to expect strong, clear, and well-modulated sounds from him. So, even tho' his "whispery" intro' on this song was not his norm, he was right on cue, in tune, in rhythm, and finished strong. Also some feel Libera didn't perform up to par. Considering the circumstances and audio glitches, they did very well. As someone said, "Cut the children some slack!". Congrat's Brian!
Er, I presume you mean Brian Wilson "The guy" the whole evening was about. And no he doesn't smile. He has a schizoaffective disorder, causing auditory hallucinations, depressions, bi-polar disorder etc... :-(
That background choir is really horrible. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but it is such a shame that you let a great performance be ruined by letting some enthusiast hobbyists without singing lessons join it.
I like the part when they try to lower their voice between 1:18 and 1:30. Josh's voice has a very distinct characteristic. It's like a kid within a kid.
Those of you that have follwed Brian's music from '61 to Love & Mercy, and have read his biog, will realise why there's not a dry eye in the theatre. A truly tortured soul.
I've just finished the book.

@alottaUtube You're welcome you can tell by watching his whole tribute and her's she's still only has eyes for Brian Wilson isn't cute that she's stiill holding on to that crush?
I have never previously heard of Libera so can't make comparison with their other work; I approached this as a fan of Brian Wilson's work over more than forty years! I loved watching Brian during this and I am sure that he was as moved as I was by this heartfelt rendition.
Regardless of the criticism below.. This beautiful piece was masterfully done and brings tears to my eyes. Thanks Libera...and thank you Brian Wilson for making this world a bit more beautiful place in my life.
Wow. I never thought I'd say "that was horrible" about a Libera performance, but there it is. However, it's not possible for the entire back-up choir to be off key as it is a couple of times, nor for the piano to go in and out of key as it does. All the clips of this are the same recording, so I think there's a problem with that recording, combined with Tom's voice cracking, and the sound engineer clearly messing up the mic settings (hopefully he hasn't worked since).
After listening this performance a couple of times I'm pretty sure the "bad sounds" are the sound-guy (whatever that's called) and the back-up choir's doing. Yeah, Tom's a little nervous at the beginning, but that's okay. That weird low annoying sound comes from the older boys' choir - at least that how it seems.
In any case, performing at such an event, in front of such an audience...if they remained all cool, it'd be weird :)
I think the only really bad thing about is at least two members of Libera had a bad performance! BUT I know that given the very high standards that they are all use to singing/performing then they probably felt quite bad about, without anybody having to point it out to them!
I will say this though, thankfully this does not happen to often, so WELL DONE LIBERA!!!!
The first singer seemed very nervous. His voice wasn't coming out right. This is what happens to me if I try to sing in public....but I had never seen it happen to that particular singer in Libera. He must have felt very intimidated singing in front of such famous people.
the first singer was very experienced, but this was a a high profile gig for the group, fair play 2 him he did well under the circumstances. listen to their cd version - note perfect!
oww man!!! where does the one tone voice, comes from.. some voice out there is really heard loud and its lost!!! woohoo, does it come from sam? its sam's voice, but not sure if it is...
The Boys who was singing the lower parts was...Sam, Josh, Zak and Liam. i think Sam and joshs mic was on 2 loud...Tom probably was just nervous cos who wouldnt be infront stars like that!x but to be honest, it was still a excellent performance compared to other choirs~* Plus Liam said on myspace tht there was little rehearsal time???x
It is incredibly moving to see Brian's emotion during this performance. He loved his brothers so much. Brian can always bring on fresh tears for me. Bless him...
I cried too, to see so many talented people who changed the world in such a good way. This was Dec 2 , 2007, Quite a feat for a young boy to make Diana Ross cry and receive a standing ovation from such luminaries of the music world !
I've added this to my 2007 playlist. 110 of my 400 playlists will take you back in time to the music of any year since 1900 with just a few clicks of your mouse . . . . . .
Yes, the alto parts were too loud, but whatever happens, I still love Libera!
And I'm really awed at how Tom gave it his best even though he was already fourteen in this video and his voice was maturing. He was still able to do it, and he sounded great! ^^
I'm sure they sing live in all their concerts because in their Crystal Cathedral performance, Mini-Ben sang the wrong lyrics for "Far Away," but he still sounded so angelic!
Ok just to be clear here to all of those that are trying to criticize this performances.....only 9 members are performing here with Many boys in the background who were from various Private and public Schools from around the greater Washington, DC area. All of the boys were thilled to sing for Brian Wilson , with President Bush in attendance. Though it is not up to Libera's normal standared, it is still a nice tribute that the boys will never forget.
the key is not friendly to them, and probably the mics were not adjusted as Robert Prizeman would have adjusted them....sam's mic was much too loud. Also, they are singing with another boys choir.
The last thing is the the monitors on stage weren't working too well...you'll notice the choir lags at the beginning.
"Love & Mercy" is Brian talking from his heart and wrapping a simple wish up in vocal harmonies once again. Maybe not the best song he ever wrote but one of the most honest!
they're so good, but this a terrible recording. the sound engineers should be fired. they ruined what should otherwise have been a phenominal performance
Oh, of course. Tom is just beginning puberty. He is one of my favourite Libera singers. It's a pity we're not going to enjoy his singing as a boy soprano anymore. He was always a great one, but now - it's the biology... Good luck Tom! God bless you!
Oh, just listen to him carefully. He's singing with a difficulty, not very good, not very clear, not loud enough - which is unusual for Tom, because he's very talented and a very good singer. And now how can I tell it - well, I was singing many years in a choir and I remember my own mutation - now it's the same with Tom. Furthermore - I'm a musician and I just hear such things. Sorry, this is not a scientific explanation, but fairly enough for me. Listen to previous Tom on other recordings.
Not at all . Blame the sound engineers. Listen to him on Sempiterna later. You will like seeing another fresh young face; a dark haired kid with green eyes.
Tom's voice hasn't changed yet! This recorded December 2007 and Tom was still going strong on their last album- he had a solo on "You Were There". There were issues with the performance though, I remember reading that the boys couldn't get any water and there other issues to with mics, but I don't remember what they were.
is it true that his voice has not changed yet? i heard from a source that it changed recently and that was the cause of him not going to the concerts that are to come.
I think he was just nervous. something went weird in this recording, the low part is too loud or something...their version on songs of praise is much better.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wilson's music, but I found this choice to be odd and funny and questionable. The open ing lyric is "I was sitting in a crummy movie with my hands on chin..."
Quite frankly, I don't think the lower part was out of tune. Granted, the arrangement could have been better, but the lower part was in tune. It just didn't work very well. The only suspect part is the low tune in the ending.
It may not be perfect in Libera's standards, but it's still pretty awesome. Especially the harmony in the middle.
People should look up the New Dawn version of this song. The arrangement is lovely and peaceful and the boys sing it to perfection.
Right, Libera this time they didn't perform as well as normally they do, but i think this was like "on the fly" perform, probably they didn't have enough time to practice with the band and the back up chorus, because the voice arrengement in the album "new dawn", is kind of different, and honestly the audio in the theater wasn't 100% profesional...(minute 1:12), but really, this boys are very talented, is too sad they look bad for an unprofessional staff.
I'm agree. Libera this time they didn't perform as well as normally they do, but i think this was like "on the fly" perform, probably they didn't have enough time to practice with the band and the back up chorus, because the voice arrengement in the album "new dawn", is kind of different, and honestly the audio in the theater wasn't 100% profesional...(minute 1:12), but really, this boys are very talented, is too sad they look bad for an unprofessional staff.
Gosh,I think ,maybe Libera really didn't perform well this time! at the beginning,Tom's voice wasn't as well as expected and then,at 1:12,it sounds really out of tune.
After the audio problem in minute 1:12, Josh sound kind of out of tune... am i right??... o it looks like his voice starts change, or just maybe the equalization.. can anybody give an opinion???
On the Libera My Space blog Liam said there was a lot of confusion back stage before the performance. Very little rehersal time & Secret Service checking their ID tags! Was that dumb. If they sang at 8:00PM that means it was 1:00AM, their time in London.Tom could still have drank a sip of water. He seams to breath through his mouth and if so could explain a dry throat.
what happen with tom??

I've just heard them in Dublin (31.7.09): absolutely live!
One year ago, I've joined their concert in London Qeeen Elisabeth Hall: Live too.
In their videos they would do what any singer does during a music video. That's normaly playback.
But again they really sing perfect live.

what happened? they sound...not themselves
jazzam747 2 years ago 6
the key is not friendly to them, and probably the mics were not adjusted as Robert Prizeman would have adjusted them....sam's mic was much too loud. Also, they are singing with another boys choir.
The last thing is the the monitors on stage weren't working too well...you'll notice the choir lags at the beginning.

Oh good heavens, this must be one of their worst performances! What happened!? They can do so so so much better!?

Great tribute to a troubled genius. I was stunned when I saw it on live TV.

"Love & Mercy" is Brian talking from his heart and wrapping a simple wish up in vocal harmonies once again. Maybe not the best song he ever wrote but one of the most honest!
oldstuff 2 years ago
That was truly beautiful. The entire tribute was. I enjoyed watching all of it very much!

It is a beautiful tune from an awesome man,
Just enjoy it's magic.

I think this is brilliant, but when i tried showing it to my best friend, he said he couldn't listen to it!!!!
He says it sounds aweful, but I recon it's just because in this recording josh and sam (altos) sing much too loudly...
I STILL LOVE IT! (L)

Beautiful and particularly touching is watching Brian wilson with his wife's hand on his shoulder. Very wonderful !!

Why does this performance sound so terrible? I really hope it's because of the sound recording or whatever technical difficulty there was.
ghotiinthesky 2 years ago 2
Yeah I think the lower voices were microphoned too loud, and the high parts not loud enough! So you've got Josh and Sam singing far too loud =(

can any one tell me who is that man? to who the people are applauding ?

they're so good, but this a terrible recording. the sound engineers should be fired. they ruined what should otherwise have been a phenominal performance

Oh, of course. Tom is just beginning puberty. He is one of my favourite Libera singers. It's a pity we're not going to enjoy his singing as a boy soprano anymore. He was always a great one, but now - it's the biology... Good luck Tom! God bless you!
skrybanymsnet 3 years ago 6
just out of interest, how can u tell Tom is going through puberty?
Sibadibdoo2 3 years ago
Oh, just listen to him carefully. He's singing with a difficulty, not very good, not very clear, not loud enough - which is unusual for Tom, because he's very talented and a very good singer. And now how can I tell it - well, I was singing many years in a choir and I remember my own mutation - now it's the same with Tom. Furthermore - I'm a musician and I just hear such things. Sorry, this is not a scientific explanation, but fairly enough for me. Listen to previous Tom on other recordings.
skrybanymsnet 3 years ago
ahh yes I can see what you mean now. Shame though, Tom had such a lovely voice.
Sibadibdoo2 3 years ago
Blame it on the sound engineers.
Listen to him a year later and then make up your mind.
ifuliki 2 years ago
Not at all . Blame the sound engineers. Listen to him on Sempiterna later. You will like seeing another fresh young face; a dark haired kid with green eyes.
ifuliki 2 years ago
Tom's voice hasn't changed yet! This recorded December 2007 and Tom was still going strong on their last album- he had a solo on "You Were There". There were issues with the performance though, I remember reading that the boys couldn't get any water and there other issues to with mics, but I don't remember what they were.
Libera36 2 years ago
is it true that his voice has not changed yet? i heard from a source that it changed recently and that was the cause of him not going to the concerts that are to come.
it's so sad that he won't come!

I think he was just nervous. something went weird in this recording, the low part is too loud or something...their version on songs of praise is much better.

@clam. I disagree the lyric is perfect.
depression takes your smile away why dont some of you try Love & Mercy a bit more as you blast through

The arrangement is lovely and peaceful and the boys sing it to perfection.
cclc312002 3 years ago 3
Right, Libera this time they didn't perform as well as normally they do, but i think this was like "on the fly" perform, probably they didn't have enough time to practice with the band and the back up chorus, because the voice arrengement in the album "new dawn", is kind of different, and honestly the audio in the theater wasn't 100% profesional...(minute 1:12), but really, this boys are very talented, is too sad they look bad for an unprofessional staff.
Pava21152 3 years ago
I agree. I think their voices were not blend together as they did in other video. Also, the solo didn't perform well. Quite disappointed.

the peoples behind them sound emmmm not as good as libera!

Pava21152 3 years ago
On the Libera My Space blog Liam said there was a lot of confusion back stage before the performance. Very little rehersal time & Secret Service checking their ID tags! Was that dumb. If they sang at 8:00PM that means it was 1:00AM, their time in London.Tom could still have drank a sip of water. He seams to breath through his mouth and if so could explain a dry throat.
Scheuermann 3 years ago
yeah it's out of tune, but you really can't expect them to have their high voices forever.
:( saddening
