I appreciate a good story and this is one of them. As an artist half of you knows the likelihood of such a thing happening to you are rare, but the other half clings to the belief that it can. I love Sunday Morning and am so glad they aired Wayne's story. Helps to inspire those of us who keep trying.
Marcel Duchamp responded to a question about alchemy saying that he used alchemy in his art the only way a person could - without knowing it. Wayne Thiebaud is a student of Duchamp, even though he faults Marcel for "abandoning" painting. You can sense their kinship in Wayne's spirit and his art illustrates his admiration for the existential prankster.
Sunday Morning did an excellent job on this; the opening cake frosting was inspired. Very glad they interviewed Allen Stone. Thanks to whoever for posting.
Such a great inspiration. I can't help but feel so much influence from his work. The colors, the composition, it makes me challenge myself in my painting.
How can I laugh when I want to cry, I was a grad student in 69 at UC-Davis and Wayne bought one of my sculptures at a review when I could have traded him. Now his work is at 1 million and I'm on food stamps, ah the life of an artist. Back then he was getting his suits from the Sally, bet now they are new threads. It is GREAT to see Great Artist get their due or is it dew ? He is one of them of our generation for sure. He takes the cake !
@SHUNNESON1946 OMG my sympathies - but still, to have him buy one of your sculptures!
I also have regrets re: Thiebaud - I went to Davis in 1970, saw Thiebaud's art, which I wanted to eat. I couldn't get into his classes as an undergrad, I only took his theory class. He berated our generation for trying to always be "cool" & the area bcuz of no good restaurants so he might move to SF & he wore the best, most whimsical ties - u prob saw those. Then I stupidly transferred to Berkeley.

Love Thiebaud's work, especially the landscapes. He seems very modest here, fact is he has a rare genius for mood and composition.

Nevertheless... this chap has done well as an artist...thumbs up.
