@ChaosAD187 Yager is flashy, and he did okay at the start of TUF, but I think it was a pretty weak season. I think with his personality, his exposure from tuf, and his unique look you'll see him around some of the smaller promotions. Maybe he buys a treadmill and fights his way back to the big show :)
Wow, it takes a lot to step in the cage and fight but damn these guys looked like had no training at all and wtf is up with the head gear its mma. In Texas even the amatures only wear 4 oz. gloves and thats it. Horrible...
@cottontalk ...in a smaller promotion and make some good money doing it. He may develop into a solid gate keeper, and there is no shame in that. But who knows maybe he will become a world beater and have the title in 3 years, I just think it is unlikely. There is no shame in not making it as a regular in the UFC, because they're the best of the best, and only so many are
@cottontalk I'm actually watching TUF right now on spike, and Jamie Yaeger (epic fro or not) is not a UFC level fighter for instance. He probably made it on the show because of how he looks and because they knew he would be a solid heel on the show, and now he is on the main card of the finale tonight because people care about Yaeger one way or another. He will probably be out of the UFC within 3 fights because his cardio isn't that good, and he sort of chains flashy kicks. He'll end up...
@aclapp777 well he's out after 1 fight. I actually thought he would do well - I mean did you see those first 2 fights? KO's in the first round - then he just turned to shit by not having decent cardio
@aclapp777 Yeah, I have heard the same things about the quality of people in that season compared to other seasons. But that was the first season i 'watched', and Yager seemed to stick out above them. Then I heard he was trained by some Chute Boxe guys from some source, so I immediately had high hopes for him.
@cottontalk TUF is a way to analyze fighters and prospects, and actually started out unearthing some good guys, but its really more about good tv (which it more or less is) than good fighters. Generally there are somewhere between 2 and 5 legitimate fighters coming out of TUF, and the rest are there probably for entertainment. Any way you look at it they get good exposure, allowing fans to make an emotional attachment to the fighters, and it looks great on a fighters resume. I'm very pro TUF.
@cottontalk While watching fighters in these smaller promotions, and seeing their progression over a series of fights they can spot potential in many areas of their game, and project what kind of fighter they will be. In addition they give extra credence to fighters from other combat sports with a high pedigree in things like wrestling, jiu jitsu, or boxing (much like James Toney would've had 20 years ago). This is how they spot most of their legitimate young prospects
@cottontalk nope I actually like TUF alot. The quality of prospects has taken a big hit though lately, because they're already signing a lot of good prospects without them needing to be on TUF. With the upcoming season though (12) it was an absolute prerequisite to have 3 pro fights to even be able to try out. The UFC would ideally (and generally does) look at fighters from good feeder promotions such as Ring of Combat up in Jersey, Jungle Fights in Brazil, and other shows such as Bellator...
Wow.... not since Harold Howard's infamous flip kick thing at UFC 3 have I seen such a useless and humorous technique used in a supposed mixed martial arts event.
@crankatorium ....maybe one day..... but dude if you don't know Harold Howard you are definitely missing out, he was this Canadian guy with an outrageous mullet. He put the Karate aspect back into Jiu-Jitsu lol. Go look up the Harold Howard tribute video
Head gear, shinpads and shitty fighting. I thought this was a Heavy Hitters Fight Series Promotion at first then I saw that they had a crowd so no chance of that.
@KahtoMahte if either one of these men ever made it to the premier mixed martial arts organization in the world I would lose faith in humanity and pick up boxing..... dear god Kimbo and James Toney are bad enough...
@cottontalk he fights at ufc 118 in the co-main event in August I think making his debut against Randy Couture. If anything in the world makes sense he will be promptly submitted or at the very least controlled throughout the fight
@aclapp777 What's with the bias against him? Let them compete before you condemn him. I don't understand the anger towards fighters like Lesnar,Toney and Kimbo. They started their competitive careers some where else just like everyone else in the UFC. It's called "work history". You can't just walk in,fill out an application and become a UFC fighter.
@cottontalk I agree with everything you are saying, but not in the UFC. The UFC is the world's premier mma organization. If he is serious about wanting to do mma he should fight in king of the cage or a smaller show, prove what he can do, and then if he is good the UFC could sign him. The UFC shouldn't sign 0-0, 40+, out of shape boxers just to get a pay day which is exactly what they're doing. They're throwing him in with a top 15 (they say he's top 10) 5 time champion who should....
@aclapp777 I disagree,I think he should work his way up in the UFC. Why keep him down This is about marketing the fight that will make the most money and grab headlines. Your bias is what the UFC wants. They want you to hate him and want to see him get crushed because you will buy the ppv just to see it. I want to see a great fight,it really doesn't matter to me.
@cottontalk man I'm not a zuffa zombie, I watch local fights, bellator, m-1, and pretty well anything I can get my hands on. I even watch some k-1, boxing, grappling and the components of mma individually. I'm just a fan of the sport, and I think it hurts the sport having sideshow co-main events. What the UFC wants is just what you're talking about, they want to sell fights. What I want is guys that deserve the co-main event (real mma fighters) to have that spot.
@cottontalk and I don't hate James Toney, Brock or any of those other guys. I actually kind of like Kimbo in a weird way. But, you're fooling yourself if you think Toney (who will be 42 when he has his first fight) is going to develop into a legitimate mixed martial artist. If he really likes mma and wants to do that, great, I think thats awesome. But he's gotta be in this for a payday, there is just no other way to look at it. He's done as a boxing contender and he wants to get that paper.
@aclapp777 I watched Toney's boxing career and I don't expect him to have a good MMA career. I think he is lazy when it comes to training but all it takes is a good punch. This is a payday for the UFC as well so don't just blame Toney. They made the offer and he took it, I can't blame him.
@cottontalk I completely agree with you. I'm angry with the UFC not so much James Toney. That was my point to begin with.... someone said what if these guys (in the video) were in the UFC, and I'm like I would watch another sport, because the UFC has no business signing such people, much like they should have never signed Kimbo or Toney.
@aclapp777 You can't judge a fighter until they actually fight. There are many fighters in the UFC who were signed based on limited history in the sport. The only difference is they are telling you about it with Lesnar,Toney and Kimbo. Based on what you are saying,I can only assume you despise the Ultimate Fighter show and all the guys from the show.
@cottontalk .... completely destroy him, and for what? To prove to the world that boxers with no mma experience can't do mma? For a payday? Whatever the reason it isn't to show the best mma fighters in the world to compete against each other which is what the UFC should be doing. I don't hate on Lesnar so much because he is a huge physical specimen, had elite wrestling credentials, and he was at least brought along on a progression (albeit a steep one, but he excelled when tested)
@cottontalk as far as Kimbo goes, he never belonged in the UFC, but he went through TUF just like many other mediocre fighters, showed commitment going to an excellent MMA camp, had a fairly poor showing against Houston Alexander, then got beat by a 1-0 fighter and got cut. I am much less critical of the Kimbo experience than most, I think he was handled relatively well
@aclapp777 I think Kimbo was just to old when he started MMA. If he had started 10 years ago he would have been much better. Everybody talks like he walked in got punched once and the fight was over. Kimbo is not some chump and he has improved since he got fame. I want to see him get another chance because despite all the hate,he kept training and tried to improve. He kept a positive attitude and I respect that.
@cottontalk Like I said, I kind of like Kimbo, but the dude is not a UFC level fighter. He will continue to fight in MMA in Dream and is destined to meet the likes of Minowaman and Marius Pudzianowski, so you can probably soon find him on HDnet if you really want to see him. He did get ktfo by Seth Petruzelli (who I also like, but is not a ufc level fighter), he was ultra tentative against Houston Alexander, and he got dominated on the ground by a 1-0 fighter in Matt Mitrione.
@cottontalk and Kimbo carries a great attitude, and I really think he wants to get better, he just isn't very talented. He's big and strong, but his striking is sloppy, he doesn't know how to check a leg kick, and he hasn't shown any sort of a proficient ground game.
I thought the fight itself was a fail.
