  • A very sad advertisement, remember watching this with the same contempt I hold for terrorism now.

  • Oh yeah, I remember this. Happily everyone involved was released 6 years later under the terms of the Good Friday agreement.

  • and you are still arguing

  • Comment removed

  • hey kinghen08 the ira may not have killed any one in a pub but wat about the innocents they killed when they walked into a church during a sunday service and opened fire at least the hunns had repect enough to let the ra have there mass in peace

  • can anybody tell me the name off the guy at around 1 minute 15 sec who opens fire in the bar..

  • well said world 8, its assholes like this that had this country in the state it was in for over 30 years, now some people still cant move on, dont forget it was the people that voted for peace, now the fuckers who caused all the trouble to start with are terrorising there own people these are the few who voted "no" to peace...

  • awesome

  • Very powerful ad and importantly it is impartial

  • were all human there enough pain in the world why do us as humans hate each other why dose race culture were we live etc matter .greed power money life more important what about love kids friends whats more important what ever god you worship its peace not main point

  • and by the way before u say anything i give 32 yrs of me life to these troulbes???

  • so much hatred still in people isnt it a wonder we cant move on

  • this ad scared the shit out of me.i was 7 when it was released..was always terrified everytime i went into norn iron..

  • All this bull shit for what? You finally got what you a share of the power, now that the people minds want peace the rira goes back to knw what it only knews fucking every thing up, they want the British army back on the streets and have the people hate them once again. Thank god I'm from the South Ask any south person! We don't want your trouble nor do we want the north let the British goverment deal with the mess!! We had a change to take it in WW2 but thank god we didn't take England offer

  • I can't believe there are idiots arguing over whether this ad is aimed at unionists or nationalists. Its obviously aimed at the murdering thugs on both sides. Had it been aimed at one side only then I see no reason for a subtle approach given the serious content.

  • The ends justify the means.

  • warishell09.. what happened 2 nights before kingsmill 6 innocent cathilics gunned down in their homes!! an yas wonder why kingsmills happened!!!!

  • aye but they ra fuks can blow up entire parts of cities eg omagh? BLAMELESS THINK NOT CUNT

  • I just want peace

  • so do I, and the majority on this island.

  • this vid is a direct result of loyalist scumbags its not about the troubles its about scummy huns going into pubs and killing anybody.........dont be fooled by this shite of the troubles in norn iron........the RA aka freedom fighters didnt walk into pubs and kill any1 there

  • Fuck you, the IRA murdered innocent people all the time, look up Kingsmills, La Mon, Tullyvallen, Darkley, Coagh, Bayardo bar, Enniskillen, Trillick, Birmingham, Harrods, Warrington.

Keep your fucking bullshit lies to yourself mate.

  • Fuck you, the UVF murdered more protestants than the IRA ever did and when they did kill a nationalist it was a civilian!

How do I know this, the scumbag police informers killed my da!

  • no the ra planted a bomb mate that blew many a pub up with innocent people inside......................Bloody Friday is a prime example.

Or kingsmill where protestants were dragged out of a work van and blasted to death.......................

most 'hun' gunmen went into pubs in retaliation of 'ra' sorry 'freedom fighters' bombings. the troubles were a cycle of tit for tat. I wouldnt expect you to understand that with you not even from northern ireland and all that.

  • @kinghen08

Fuck You you ignorant piece of shit. This ad is obviously aimed at both sides. Your sickening defence of Republican terror is an insult to the civilian victims of Claudy, Birmingham, Ballykelly, Warrington, Bloody Friday, La Mon, Enniskillen. The list goes on.... 'Freedom Fighters' ?............ bad joke.

  • @kinghen08 lllf no they didnt have the balls 2 look their victims in the face they stuk bombs in the doorways or under cars!!!

  • @1LOYALIST Yeah and on the other hand y'all were going around brutally murdering and torturing innocent people. Get over it. People need to realize there were two sides in this disaster and move on.

  • Remember it very well.....

  • fuckin brit propeganda this was

  • I was only 13 but it still strikes a place as I lost a friend over there

  • great ad, will never forget it, i was only 7 in 92 an still remember it well

  • Fuck me- that takes me back.

  • i grew up in northern ireland and sorry guys they tried but didnt suceed i aint biased.both sides are as bad as eachother after all we are all of the celtic race .proud to be a celt with no religous beliefs.remember it was english who started this shit not scottish or anyone else.still love ireland north and south and love being there when i wish and would move back in a flash.

  • I am 22 years old and that is one TV add that I have never fotten. Its very sad to think things like that really did happen..Lets all look ahead and never look back.

  • Agreed, One TV ad you cant forget back in the day

  • i remember this so much, scares me

  • Looking at this video, i did 14 yrs of life sentence, 79-93. wont say what org, dosent matter. Do we want to go back to this? I lostthem yrs as my daughter grew up.

  • Good words hope you and your daughter are now a family and you now enjoy your grandkids by the way your country on your profile gives away the organisation but i like to think we have moved beyond all of that crap best wishes ian

  • @getzls well said mate, lets never go back to the bad days of the troubles.

  • Yeah, because Northern Ireland was so great in the 70's & 80's! Wise yourself up. I'm proud of my upbringing & think it probably made me a more rounded person but I look forward to the day when the complete history of troubles are tought in schools as a cautionary tale!

  • very true and not just one side like i was taught but now i am adult enough to realise bad on both sides and now i dont have any religous beliefs and a greater respect for the human race.

  • I dont fit the right criteria to join the PSNI, my parents are married! :D

  • Looks like it, an Uzi was a loyalists favorite, and what looks like an mp40 or stirling maybe in what could be a greysteel or loughinisland reconstruction...?

  • How do you know that the advert is about loyalists?? Did the IRA never shoot anybody before lol

  • Ah come on, a blind man on a galloping horse can see that the bar scene is a direct reconstruction of loughinisland or the rising sun in Derry, But the ad has to look generic, hence the simple black gloves on the coffin, no flag or hint at political persuasion.

  • But the attacks on the rising sun and Loughinisland were a lot bloodier than whats depicted in the advert, 8 people were killed in Greysteel and 6 in Loughinisland. It also states in the box to the right that the advert was first screened in 1992, the Greysteel attack didnt take place to 1993 and loughinisland til 1994.

  • nice post . that was some secterian shite talk right there

  • dat stuf is just disgustin eeugh! babys cute though!!!

  • your man spraying the bar reminds me of michael stone-that was dfo a loyalist, that's all those dim witted muscle monkey men could do

  • Hmmm, what about the Darkley Massacre? Think that was some of your heroes!

  • no they would be idiots as well but lets be honest this type of thing was more related to the loyalist side eg greysteele

  • Claudy, Birmingham, La Mon, Enniskillen, Shankill, Omagh (the list goes on, and on, and on ....) spring to mind. The only difference is the weapon of choice. All murdering bastards.

  • Nothing wrong with being proud of being Irish, thats your right in a free society just as I'm proud to be British. Just be careful who's mast you tie your colours to!

  • My social psych lecturer was from Northern Ireland. He specialised in prejudice because of what he saw and experienced as a kid, and he showed us ads like this in class.

  • This video shows the power of advertising. I'm 29 and this was shown in my youth and it affected me greatly. Now we have peace in Northern Ireland. I truly believe it played a powerful part.

  • It does remind you that joining the IRA is bad for your health - fucking scumbags....

  • all war is brutal i remberer seeing this on utv in hospital after a beating from the ruc for the crime of hitch hiking. still peace rules

  • I'd forgotten how powerfull this ad was. It was such an important ad campaign and we wouldn't have had the cessation of violence and peace process had it not been for the way in which these adverts challenged what people believed. Thank God its just a memory now.

  • nice cortina!!

  • Wow. This was the first song I ever learned how to sing (age 4 maybe?) but I never saw this ad. (I'm in the US, so...) But wow. Powerful stuff.

  • informer hotline....lol.

  • Its funny(in a sad way) that on TV in most countries you see adverts that tell you not to drink and drive, smoke, etc because they are bad for your health, but in Northern Ireland we had adverts telling us to to do terrorism because its bad for your health

  • Fucking rocks - I remember seeing this on English TV - Tarrant on TV of all places and its a fantasic ad. At least it doesn't take sides and the people in it could be from either side....an important message Id say.

  • Completely agree with the poster, this is the best advert evere!

  • im 18 and remember this add when i was wee...still goosebumps!

  • why is it we could make hard hitting films like this about ireland, but now we have people trying to blow planes out of the skies of all western countries and we cant even lable them as muslim. Sad times. Good movie

  • good choice loved these videos

  • This advert scared the shit out of me when I was wee.

  • i mind this add from wen i was wee and it still has the same impact on me even now.

  • yeah definitely i always associated the song with the ad, and the memory of this ad has stuck with me for years and i still remember when that ad was on tv, i mustv only been about 6 or 7. its realy effective and thought-provoking!

  • loved it!

    :) the music was awesome.

  • the best ad put on television.... the northern irish are more creative than the rest of the uk and ireland AT LEAST... because of the troubles made them able to come up with such provoking, accurate art like this. how everyone including me remembers it so many years on is testament to that.

  • who's who doesn't matter in this case. it was ment for all sides of the divide.

funny thing, i was christmas shopping in bangor and noticed a LOT of police there.. and yes i honestly thought there was going to be a return to the bad old days.

    not funny at all !!!

  • its great because it applies to both sides

  • Not quite sure I understand the story of this one (can't tell who's who), but it's a powerful ad. I still can't hear this song without thinking about guns and kneecappings ...

  • Absolutely brilliant video, very emotional, even in this present time with peace. Anyone know the artist covering this particular version of cat's in the cradle

  • Harry Chapin

  • havnt seen this add since i was a wee lad love the song and it always reminds me of this video really gets ya thinking

  • Just heard that song on the radio, instantly thought of being a 7 year old seeing that ad. Probably the most powerful ad ever considering that I still associate that song with the ad every time.

  • I was just telling my mate about this ad the other day its a classic ad i was about 5 years old when i saw it..... Chilling and always stuck out in my mind

  • epic. this scared the shit outta me as a kid.

  • This is the reason there is peace in northern ireland

  • grew up with this ad myself, loved it, gr8 song aswell this is what i think of everytime i hear it...its so strange now tinking back to the 'old days' and im only 22 myself....thankfully times have changed and its alot more peaceful!!

  • This was a powerful ad and certainly highlighted to people how evil terrorism is. Just a shame it didn't play on the hearts of the blood thirsty killers. Hopefully all this is behind us, but we should never forget the 3,000 plus who were slaughtered in Northern Ireland since 1968.

  • Good advert, although I am English, serving in Northern Ireland will always have an impact on me.

  • i remember this add. it sent chills down my spine then and it still does now. if ads were as shocking as that now things would be so different. (speeding, anything to do with driving, drinking anything)

  • reading all of these comments, makes me very proud to say my dad was involved in the making of this ad and the others in the peace series, he worked for the ni govt and with McCann Ericson in belfast i think you can all understand the impact they had and how brave they were to put them out. I was fortunate enough to travel to the north coast to watch parts of the days like this ad (two boys from diferent religious backgrounds becoming friends)also worth watching

  • God I've been looking for this for years, brilliant adverts.

I remember when they first aired when I was at secondary school.

Any chance of the one where the chap gets shot while fishing? Just like most Northern Irish public service ads these are bloody well done, our road safety ones are far more powerful than those you get on the mainland.

  • I'll second that..been living in england for years now and the ads come no where near as shocking as those back home.. too much pc ism over here.

Prefer the one's they make in Northern Ireland where they aren't afraid to hold back on the issue

  • I despise "Terrorism" but can understand the troubles although I never withnessed them first hand being so young. I was to young back then to know much execept killing was wrong. This add was and will always be a reminder of my childhood and my first introduction that irish and english were killing alike in a cuase that was left with remorse on both parts. I just hope this add led to the reason why some choose not to support violence as an answer.

  • a brilliant advertisement would love to see the others as well grew up in NI and remember this advert would love to be able to show my own kids what it was like

  • I remember this being on when I was a kid. Just watching it there gave me shivers up my spine. I lost an uncle who was in the army to an IRA hit and it turned our family upside down, and this advert (and the other one) always drove it home for me. When growing up I always had respect for the job the army and police had, fighting a faceless entity like the IRA and even UVF, UDA etc. Here's to a free, peacefull democracy in Northern Ireland.

  • love that song! never saw the ad though thanks for sharing!

  • A little cheesy, but a strong message. Shows the cowardice and deception that is terrorism. Heck of a long ad if it's a public service announcement, though.

  • wow. Used to remember this being on tv all the time here late 80s / early 90s. Still gives me goosebumps.

This version appears to have a sound sync issue?

  • I remember being on tour in Belfast when this was on tv it realy hit it all home for all the squaddies that tour peace out to all over there

  • wow...powerful stuff

  • Do you have your kids only wknds, or are you full time family man? If full time, that would make it even tougher to leave for duty in Ireland. I absolutley respect people who do and did serve in the military, at least for the good countries where service means something honorable.

  • Oh i'm full time but wasn't back then can't do family and army plus was only a young lad then

  • What do you mean at least for the good countries?

  • Yeah I saw it on Tarrant on Tv as well, got it on tape somewhere. Very powerful Ad !

  • I saw that episode where they finished on this add. Powefull stuff indeed

  • wow, haven't seen this video in years, by the time I was 9 I knew every word to this song, shame the quality isn't better

  • Wow remember this from tarrant on tv from years ago and its always stuck in my mind

  • I was 12 when I first saw this ad, It always stuck with me.

  • That brings back memories. God the hair are sticking up on the back of my neck even now

  • Remember it so clearly when I was growing up, thank god a lot has changed since that advert was made

  • Always remember watching this when growing up in the middle of it. Always makes the hairs on the back of neck stand. Thank God its all over now.

  • likewise berty, i always think of this advert when i hear this song. will always remember this advert, and the other one with the protestant and catholic kids playing in the sand on the beach and they exchange pins with each other. anyone remember that one?

  • i saw this on tarrant on tv. thankfully i never lived in N/I

  • very moving, remember seeing pt on Tarrant or something simlar

  • thank the good lord its all over

  • yes have been looking this for ages, remember it form when i was a really wee kid

  • Looking for this for ages -cheers !

  • Im a big fan of PIF's. been looking for this on for ages.

  • Anyone remember or have the other one, with the man gettin shot while fishing? "2 women, one married to the victim of crime, one married to the prisoner of crime!" when i was like 14!!

  • i remember it but i dnt have it! itz called 'lady' if that help. shows wedding etc right?

  • Yeah, and the guy fishing gettin shot, the guy in jail, and the 2 wives bumping into eachother in the florists, Jees iv a good memory!!! "2 women, one the victim of violence, and the other the widow of violence!" etc... :-)

  • datz it uve got it.... 2 women, 2 traditions, 2 tragedies! lol! ive jus dun dat recently 4 ma cw!

    lol

  • that advert had an affect on me when i was young, any time i hear cats in the cradle, it always reminds me of it

  • Same here. its the first thing that comes to my head when i hear the song

  • YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

Sorry, been looking for a while.

  • Excellent mate! I've been looking for this for a long time now. I remember it being shown in the NITAT package, prior to deployment to the Province. Thanks again.

  • Its great to know those days are over!

  • Indeed. Those moustaches were awful.

  • Jesus that brings back a few memories!

  • cheers matey great stuff! shame about the sound! cheers!

  • if you have any idea where i can get the video of this please let me know!

  • Go to google video an enter this number in the video search 8023755040190189384 its called the confidential telephone advert.

  • mate i have to say quality. i remember watchin that adveert when i was about 15 on tarrent on tv! one of the best well thought adverts ever!
