The ones already used have been crimped to fit a bottle and therefore do not work well for flattening. It's best to get unused ones.
You can flatten bottle caps with a hammer but the results are not as good and requires you hammer several times to get them flatten. Some people I have heard buy a tortillo press like an IMUSA Cast Iron Tortilla Press. Also for chokers & other bottlecap supplies to make necklaces a good place is bottlecapzone . com

I have a bottle cap but I don't want to ruin the paint on it when I flatten it, would the pictre still be safe?

Can you do this with like bottle caps that have been used? like a twist off, off a bottle? and with out the thing? like with a hammer?

They are new bottle caps (never used or crimped to go on a bottle).
