Forgot to mention her persecution of Catholics in her own country (Majority of the commoners at the time.) Or the fact that the Church of England was a political tool her father used and that Elizabeth used for oppression of her own people. England became a police state under her monarchy. Mary the I had nothing on Bloody Bess. But, years or propaganda have written her as some great Queen. Honestly it's been centuries, can't she be represented as something beyond the "perfect" Virgin Queen?
We watched this movie in our History class today, and I was impressed by the production quality. It was the only video in History that I actually enjoyed watching!
How selective is collective memory! Britain's slave-labor based colonies in the west saved her economy. Britain's participation in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade enriched her at the expense of Blacks and Indians. These same protestants argued that Blacks and Indians had no soul to justify their abusive and depraved treatment. How could anyone make a movie about her reign but NOT address how colonization and slavery saved the British economy. Elizabeth inherited an empty treasury!
@SisterMotown I don't wish offence to you but the u.s. government has really suckered black americans with that narative. Many americans were at the forefront of slavery. And once the first american civil war, or american revolution, was won against britain and her indian and freed slave allies, the american settelers continued to spread accross america, with slaves, wiping out the indians as policy. In england we are far more self critical than anyone else is prepared to be on these issues.
@itsinmynamechap Sir I do not need a 'constructed narrative' designed to induce patriotism fed to me. This is my family's history. I know exactly who was a slave under the English, the Dutch, and the Spanish in my family. The British ran slavery here on the east coast for over 200 years before the revolution! They did not evacuate all they promised freedom to. My family had to run to Michigan and into Canada. It is you that has bought truth for a mean price. We have English names for a reason.
@SisterMotown I'm not denying english involvement which was very considerable and disgraceful. However, at some point before the 'revolution' the same people that were running the trade and keeping slaves on the american side no longer considered themselves english but american. Some american presidents even owned slaves right? If britain was built on slavery then the u.s.a. certainly was. If your family had to run to canada then that was precisely because they were offered refuge there? Or not?

@ImperialEarthEmpire You are glad your ancestors were raped, killed and deprived of human dignity? self-hate is a terrible sickness. Get some help sweetheart.
@backto1960 You look at any other empire, you will find that in comparison the British were a lot more peaceful than others. What about Genghis Khan? The Roman Empire? The Persians? The british colonies like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, america all colonized themselves, not the empire. India was got by trade, hong kong by war. Africa was Colonised by either yes, war or Converting them to christians. And any island we come across seems to automatically become ownership of the Empire lmao :)
@Wisdomfanatic2011 compassionate monarchs who enslaved most of the world and ignited conflicts that will last an eternity. Compassionate monarchs who treated human beings as animals and had no regard for human dignity. Compassionate monarchs indeed. If there is a hell, the British empire is rotting in it.
@Wisdomfanatic2011 Hah, yeah, Henry the 8th was so selfless. And England switched between being catholic and protestant numerous times. I have nothing against england, and i respect a lot of its history and people, but you sound a bit cocky/prejudiced with your comment.
@Wisdomfanatic2011 ultra nationalistic dick, the history of your country is plagued with bloody revolutions as well. Also while the people of your country were "prospering' your monarchs went around the world inflicting atrocious genocidal policies upon indigenous peoples of other countries for centuries, somewhat still today but america has taken on that role now.
200 hundred years has passed since the last great battle between Britain and Spain and you brits still put down the spanish people by hiring mexican-gipsys alike people in order to play as spaniards. I guess the Black Legend didnt die. Your chauvinism is frigging hilarous! :-)
She was a virgin because she was so ugly that no man wanted to have sex with her. Horrible movie, have changed the story and characterization of Spanish is a shame.
@1994cordobes the movie's portrayal of the Spanish was unambiguous. What is, in your opinion, been a more historically correct characterization of Spanish?
What a waste of time, what a pity, spaniards and british insulting each other for something that happened almost 500 years ago. The truth is both of our countries are living a time of social crisis, we should be united in our common interest, western europe, the good old values, the enlightmen ideas, europe as the icon of the civilization all around the world. What those chimps are doing in Tottenham, Bristol and LIverpool right now is a fuckin disgrace. Go UK.! Greetings from Spain.
Can you tell me if "Elizabeth" and "Elizabeth: Golden Age" are different films? One is from 1998, second from 2007... Because I don't know which of them to download...
@maryo94 yes they are different versions...if you want this one, you want Elizabeth: The Golden Age .....which in my opinion is the best version.....period.
@maryo94 They are essentially two parts of the same story. The first film is of the young Elizabeth up until she declared herself the Virgin Queen, married to England. The second film is of her time after that, with religious turmoil, and up to and including the battle against the Spanish Armada.
@erzen how could she be a dictator? She was Queen it was common sense back then to have one strong powerful leader who made all the decisions something like democracy would've been unnatural
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Elizabeth, whore fucking bitch. I hope you're burning in hell. This movie has fabricated the story, 90% of the movie is false. The best thing is Cate Blanchett, great actress. ¡Viva ESPAÑA!
...The famous or rather infamous Hawkins though, I am a direct relation myself, not the infamous John Hawkins though, I'm a direct decendant of his younger brother William hawkins, cousins of Sir Francis Drake. It's a shame that John pretty much started Britains involvement in the slave trade.
@TheMarrification King James I was the first English ruler to legalize slavery in the U.S. Colonies in 1619, 16 years after the death of Elizabeth I who'd outlawed the idea. Slavery was never practiced on English soil. Hawkins worked with Spanish slave traders. He'd stolen 3 Spanish Ships in the Armada for use in the slave trade, and was exiled from England in 1589. He'd become a full-time slave trader for the remaining 6 years of his life.
I love hearing about the armada, coming from where I do, it was always taught to us all at school here all about Drake, Wraleigh etc. We've got all the famous history where I am, lol. We'd go on outings to The Hoe and historic Barbican and that. Who streets are named Armada Way, Mayflower Street and a whole area is called Drake...
@ fortunaimperator1 I've studied years on this subject and queen Elizabeth did not have scabies as you stated and to all the rest ... The actual King Phillip of Spain was also King of other lands as well and he was blond blue eyed. In those days, kings were many times king of several countries at the same time. And this also changed around as they fought and defeated each other in wars. This is an awesome movie and well done.
That is only a film, it is not the true..... Stop the Discussion.
Every body know that Queen Elisabeth suffered of scabies …. For that reason she lost her hair, she became bald and the smell of her skin full of infections was so disgusting that the foreigners ambassadors couldn’t support it. …. That’s the TRUE, not Hollywood.
Perhaps that is why she is called the VIRGIN QUEEN.
There's been uncovered evidence that, myths aside, Henry VIII was corrupt as well as James I. Some suggest that Elizabeth merely covered for her father. But while others on the British throne may have failed, there is far too much evidence of positiive accomplishment and rightfulness on the part of Elizabeth I to suggest that she had knowledge of their sins. She committed none of her own. Family wasn't first for she placed England before producing an heir. The Golden Age is proof of her success.
There was zero slave trade in England and Colonies, during and before the Reign of Elizabeth I. Fact. The Post Tudor House Change introduced the acceptance of Colonial Slave usage in 1619 under James I. Only Spanish Colonies utilized Slaves prior to this time. While it's true that before this, rogue English pirates like Hawkins sold slaves to Spain w/stolen ships, they did so without English consent, nor Royal knowledge.
WHAT AN ANTI-SPANISH AND ANTI-CATHOLIC MOVIE THIS IS , THEY WENT AS FAR AS PORTRAYING THE SPANIARDS LOOKING MORE AS PEOPLE FROM SOUTH AMERICA ( NO DISRESPECT ) AND ALL DRESSED IN BLACK CLOTHING TO MAKE THEM LOOK BAD. ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS TAKE A LOOK AT HISTORY BOOKS TO SEE THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE , WHAT A PRO-ENGLISH , BULLSHITTING MOVIE.
@themailman43 Elizabeth stood up to Spain rightfully, for she refused to permit England to become part of the Spanish Empire. Instead, she kept Britian in tact. This was not anti-Spain, but pro-preservation, and was absolutely correct. The Catholic Church had to be removed from government. She was right in doing this yet did allow freedom of choice in religion, Catholicism included.
@themailman43 do your saying they make them look south american? and thats a disrespectful to them? that disrespects me and im hispanic you know almost all latin americans have a mix of Spaniard in them? doesnt that ring a bell? jesus man you sound like a little twerp.
@xxmetioqurexx Don't get me wrong and i apologize if i offended you. I know some Latin Americans have Spanish in them , but the men who fought in the Spanish Armada, were Spaniards, and the actors should look like Spaniards, not mixed race men.
@xxmetioqurexx Yes, there're some in the south of Spain who look like that, but they don't represent the majority of Spaniards in the rest of Spain. Why use these small group to represent Spaniards , and not Spaniards from the majority.?
@themailman43. there wouldn't be any difference if they were white with blonde hair and blue eyes because thats just simply another more unique looking spaniard. its clear you think the browner or less nordic someone looks the less appealing they are hence when you said the film was anti spanish for portraying the spanish people as looking like people from South America. im just saying that it shouldnt matter how they look because they are still Spaniards they are NOT hispanics not a big deal
@xxmetioqurexx The film is anti spanish and anti catholic. Elizabeth is portrayed like a heroine and King Phillip II like a hump back nut. In reality the cause for this invacion was Queen Elizabeth's continuous attacks on the Spanish , whether it be sending pirates to attack and plunder Spanish shipping indiscriminately or constantly meddling in Flanders and helping the protestants. There's nothing heroic about Queen Elizabeth, she's the one that provoked this war....And as far as how.....
@xxmetioqurexx .....spaniards looked , it would just be good that Hollywood would stick to what Spaniards really look like, instead of that racist stereotype.
@themailman43 WHAT THE HELL? racist stereotype? how is this a racist stereotype in any human way possible? they look like Spaniards simple as that. not every Spaniard is blonde and blue eyed as not every spaniard has dark hair and dark eyes. its actually better that for once Hollywood doesn't portray every European country to be stereotypically European looking which is your classic Nordic look. you sound like you have an inferiority complex >_<
@xxmetioqurexx I didnt' say they have to be blond, blue eyes, bud. They just have to look like the Spaniards that ive seen when i visited Spain, that's all. Im sure if they would make a movie about England and they use let's say , Egyptian actors to play the English, there would be more than a frew comments critizicing that, don't you think.?
@themailman43 okay so they have to look like Spaniards. well define to me the PERFECT Spaniard look because apparently to you theirs a CERTAIN Spaniard look and im curious to know what actor would fit the role perfectly because penelope cruz, javier bardem..antonio banderas... all look pretty moorish to me. but anyway thats not the point...IT doesnt matter if they make the spaniards look this way because thats not what the films about. the film is pretty bias though ive heard it doesnt
@xxmetioqurexx just take a trip to spain and see for yourself , it's pointless and a waste of time an argument like this. I gave my opinion on this video and that's it , if you dont like it or don't agree with it, too bad.
@themailman43 regardless i think you have a clear inferiority complex. at least you handled your arguments well and didnt curse at me and whatnot so for that props to you :3 have a good life.
@themailman43 represent true events, but anyway the point is WHO CARES how they looked lol they would never put egyptians to play british actors... that doesnt make any sense where as representing the spanish to look moorish does because its in some of there blood.
@themailman43 i am half spanish and all my family from spain and my fathers freinds look like what you called a racist stereotype; an I myself have darker skin, brown eyes and dark brown hair. It isnt racist it is just that a fair wack of spanish people look like that. From all my years of visting my family spread across Spain; not all bu about 85% of people i've seen look like the man in the movie.
@folladordeprostis Those are patriotic movies , after all the Russians were our enemies during the cold war right.?. What about the very lefty movie " Che " ? What about the actors in Hollywood.? , Benicio del Toro , Danny Glover, Shawn Penn , Susan Sarandon , Tom Hanks , and many others i can't remember right now , all swing to the left and have even defended Fidel Castro's Cuban dictatorship of more than 50 yrs. All these hypocrits wouldn't have made the millions they've made in ....
@themailman43 che was not a hollywood movie,it was an independent movie, and it have limited realease because most americans don't know who is che guevara, and by the way far left people consider hollywood to be right winger and pro-american,tom hanks is right winger,he did not even mention fidel, you must be a tea party dude who consider everything left winger, and you mention "south korea"??? ajahhaaha
While it's true that John Hawkins was in charge of the British Naval Fleet and was noted for taking exceptional care of the ships, rumors of piracy and involvement with the slave trade after the Armada, ended his career. All activity after 1589 on his part, was independent of England as he'd relocated to the colonies. Elizabeth I had neither knowledge of, nor had given consent to, his slave trade dealings. Britian itself had no slavery, as it was outlawed. The Queen in no way contributed.
Yes, slavery was outlawed but not because England was such a pious country... it was just a lot cheaper to keep the whole trade in its place of origin, Africa.
@Wallylex I'm not sure what you mean and I'm not sure of the view of the median population in England at that time, but Elizabeth I herself would have no part of that idea. All British dealings in slavery anywhere, were without her consent or knowledge.
Supposedly a rumor began. It is said that an Englishman who was also a pirate, named John Hawkins, stole 3 Spanish ships, with Spanish names, during the Armada, without the Queen's knowledge. He used these ships in the underground slave trade. When apprehended, he claimed the Queen issued him the ships, understanding his undertakings. This of course was not true. Despite the fact that one ship was named "El Jesus", sacreligious in English, but common in Spanish. Elizabeth I denounced such ideas.
My Name is Lincoln composed by Steve Jablonsky. the trailer song if anybody is interested, shame that the song was used in thei trailer, it's actually the original score for The Island.
@JamesCunnyy 30 ships sunk or damaged line 4 frigates sunk and at least 27 transport the Royal Navy.Battle Cartagena in Colombia. If not for the storms you speak Spanish, if Spain had allied with Napoleon in 1808 beyond speak Spanish, and were it for spain not for the Arabs had conquered Europe.
More respect than this crap movie that tells lies just ought to have.
We won the English, French, Moors, Arabs, Dutch, German Turks to all at the same time.
@JamesCunnyy With Cromwell, 14,000 Britons were defeated in Santo Domingo, the English army was defeated again and again in Flanders. Spain has always surpassed the other countries in value and balls, Wellington, said the Spanish infantry was the best in the world, the perfidious Albion has always been behind Spain. The biggest defeat of his island from pirates, won a thousand more than 30,000 Spanish Blas de Lezo British man is.

Tinyoak2 7 months ago 2
@maryo94 They are essentially two parts of the same story. The first film is of the young Elizabeth up until she declared herself the Virgin Queen, married to England. The second film is of her time after that, with religious turmoil, and up to and including the battle against the Spanish Armada.

...The famous or rather infamous Hawkins though, I am a direct relation myself, not the infamous John Hawkins though, I'm a direct decendant of his younger brother William hawkins, cousins of Sir Francis Drake. It's a shame that John pretty much started Britains involvement in the slave trade.
TheMarrification 8 months ago
@TheMarrification King James I was the first English ruler to legalize slavery in the U.S. Colonies in 1619, 16 years after the death of Elizabeth I who'd outlawed the idea. Slavery was never practiced on English soil. Hawkins worked with Spanish slave traders. He'd stolen 3 Spanish Ships in the Armada for use in the slave trade, and was exiled from England in 1589. He'd become a full-time slave trader for the remaining 6 years of his life.
StarQualityWins 8 months ago 2
I love hearing about the armada, coming from where I do, it was always taught to us all at school here all about Drake, Wraleigh etc. We've got all the famous history where I am, lol. We'd go on outings to The Hoe and historic Barbican and that. Who streets are named Armada Way, Mayflower Street and a whole area is called Drake...
TheMarrification 8 months ago
@ fortunaimperator1 I've studied years on this subject and queen Elizabeth did not have scabies as you stated and to all the rest ... The actual King Phillip of Spain was also King of other lands as well and he was blond blue eyed. In those days, kings were many times king of several countries at the same time. And this also changed around as they fought and defeated each other in wars. This is an awesome movie and well done.
777toogie1 8 months ago
Of course the 'heroic' scene where she screams 'THEY WILL NOT PASS'.
The spanish were fighting against aggressive protestant nations.

ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS TAKE A LOOK AT HISTORY BOOKS TO SEE THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE , WHAT A PRO-ENGLISH , BULLSHITTING MOVIE.
themailman43 9 months ago
@themailman43 Elizabeth stood up to Spain rightfully, for she refused to permit England to become part of the Spanish Empire. Instead, she kept Britian in tact. This was not anti-Spain, but pro-preservation, and was absolutely correct. The Catholic Church had to be removed from government. She was right in doing this yet did allow freedom of choice in religion, Catholicism included.
StarQualityWins 9 months ago 3
@themailman43 do your saying they make them look south american? and thats a disrespectful to them? that disrespects me and im hispanic you know almost all latin americans have a mix of Spaniard in them? doesnt that ring a bell? jesus man you sound like a little twerp.
xxmetioqurexx 9 months ago
@xxmetioqurexx Don't get me wrong and i apologize if i offended you. I know some Latin Americans have Spanish in them , but the men who fought in the Spanish Armada, were Spaniards, and the actors should look like Spaniards, not mixed race men.
themailman43 9 months ago
@themailman43 some spaniards are moorish looking also. which isnt your typical celtic look
xxmetioqurexx 9 months ago
@xxmetioqurexx Yes, there're some in the south of Spain who look like that, but they don't represent the majority of Spaniards in the rest of Spain. Why use these small group to represent Spaniards , and not Spaniards from the majority.?
themailman43 9 months ago
@themailman43. there wouldn't be any difference if they were white with blonde hair and blue eyes because thats just simply another more unique looking spaniard. its clear you think the browner or less nordic someone looks the less appealing they are hence when you said the film was anti spanish for portraying the spanish people as looking like people from South America. im just saying that it shouldnt matter how they look because they are still Spaniards they are NOT hispanics not a big deal
xxmetioqurexx 9 months ago
@xxmetioqurexx The film is anti spanish and anti catholic. Elizabeth is portrayed like a heroine and King Phillip II like a hump back nut. In reality the cause for this invacion was Queen Elizabeth's continuous attacks on the Spanish , whether it be sending pirates to attack and plunder Spanish shipping indiscriminately or constantly meddling in Flanders and helping the protestants. There's nothing heroic about Queen Elizabeth, she's the one that provoked this war....And as far as how.....
themailman43 9 months ago
@xxmetioqurexx .....spaniards looked , it would just be good that Hollywood would stick to what Spaniards really look like, instead of that racist stereotype.
themailman43 9 months ago
@themailman43 WHAT THE HELL? racist stereotype? how is this a racist stereotype in any human way possible? they look like Spaniards simple as that. not every Spaniard is blonde and blue eyed as not every spaniard has dark hair and dark eyes. its actually better that for once Hollywood doesn't portray every European country to be stereotypically European looking which is your classic Nordic look. you sound like you have an inferiority complex >_<
xxmetioqurexx 9 months ago
@xxmetioqurexx I didnt' say they have to be blond, blue eyes, bud. They just have to look like the Spaniards that ive seen when i visited Spain, that's all. Im sure if they would make a movie about England and they use let's say , Egyptian actors to play the English, there would be more than a frew comments critizicing that, don't you think.?
themailman43 9 months ago
@themailman43 okay so they have to look like Spaniards. well define to me the PERFECT Spaniard look because apparently to you theirs a CERTAIN Spaniard look and im curious to know what actor would fit the role perfectly because penelope cruz, javier bardem..antonio banderas... all look pretty moorish to me. but anyway thats not the point...IT doesnt matter if they make the spaniards look this way because thats not what the films about. the film is pretty bias though ive heard it doesnt
xxmetioqurexx 9 months ago
@xxmetioqurexx just take a trip to spain and see for yourself , it's pointless and a waste of time an argument like this. I gave my opinion on this video and that's it , if you dont like it or don't agree with it, too bad.
themailman43 9 months ago
@themailman43 regardless i think you have a clear inferiority complex. at least you handled your arguments well and didnt curse at me and whatnot so for that props to you :3 have a good life.
xxmetioqurexx 9 months ago
@xxmetioqurexx There's no inferiority complex , but you're entitled to your opinion also.....you have a good life too.
themailman43 9 months ago
@themailman43 represent true events, but anyway the point is WHO CARES how they looked lol they would never put egyptians to play british actors... that doesnt make any sense where as representing the spanish to look moorish does because its in some of there blood.
xxmetioqurexx 9 months ago
@themailman43 i am half spanish and all my family from spain and my fathers freinds look like what you called a racist stereotype; an I myself have darker skin, brown eyes and dark brown hair. It isnt racist it is just that a fair wack of spanish people look like that. From all my years of visting my family spread across Spain; not all bu about 85% of people i've seen look like the man in the movie.

StarQualityWins 9 months ago 18
@StarQualityWins
Yes, slavery was outlawed but not because England was such a pious country... it was just a lot cheaper to keep the whole trade in its place of origin, Africa.
Wallylex 6 months ago
@Wallylex I'm not sure what you mean and I'm not sure of the view of the median population in England at that time, but Elizabeth I herself would have no part of that idea. All British dealings in slavery anywhere, were without her consent or knowledge.
StarQualityWins 6 months ago
Supposedly a rumor began. It is said that an Englishman who was also a pirate, named John Hawkins, stole 3 Spanish ships, with Spanish names, during the Armada, without the Queen's knowledge. He used these ships in the underground slave trade. When apprehended, he claimed the Queen issued him the ships, understanding his undertakings. This of course was not true. Despite the fact that one ship was named "El Jesus", sacreligious in English, but common in Spanish. Elizabeth I denounced such ideas.
