Next time PBS or other 'public' broadcast entity tries to tell us Ken Burns is some kind of saint, think about Paul Gonsalves here, on sax; think about Juan Tizol, who wrote the tune, and think about Tito Puente, along with others who didn't get a peep about latin americans' contribution to the jazz art form in his 7-part series entitled "Jazz."
@GeorgeHarrysSon I do think about Juan Tizoi - who also wrote Caravan I believe. .... And I met Tito Puente in 1987, I was standing behind him booking into the same hotelI I actually played on the same bill as him that night - he had Celia Cruz on vocals and her old man was also in the band ..... Unforgettable ........
PERDIDO'S COMPOSER: Juan Tizol (22 January 1900 – 23 April 1984) was a Puerto Rican trombonist and composer.
He was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Tizol got the call to join the Ellington band in the summer of 1929. Juan also was a band composer. His best known compositions, "Caravan" (1936) and "Perdido" (1941). Tizol was responsible for bringing Latin influences into the Ellington band with compositions such as "Moonlight Fiesta", "Jubilesta", "Conga Brava", and others.
Paul Gonsalves, the tenor sax soloist, is Portugese. His parents were from Cape Verde islands. He served with Ellington from 1950 until his death a couple of days before Duke himself died.
Mammoth talent, a visionary with grace and wit. A CLASS ACT who took humble pride in his art, who treated all people with respect in the way he spoke and dressed, like his mama taught him.
Now compare THIS art to the garbage that's being forced down our ears & tell me who shall remain 100 years from now.
Oh Yeah Man...I hear you loud and clear...we now live in a world without Class..and..Respect..Though it is a wonderful thing thst we still have this heritage of recordings..visual/audio... what a grand legacy..!!

Great Historic Ellington Perdido Gig!
At that time i think only one(1) white band member in 1964, the trumpetsolo man Rolf Ericsson from Sweden.
Duke was the MAN, hat´s off for Him!

He was called the Duke for a reason:

The clarinet soloist is Jimmy Hamilton. Beautiful clear sound and great chops, huh?
He was a rocking extrovert on tenor, too.
One of my favorites.
Rolf Ericson is featured on trumpet.
