im currently showing these to my kids. the kind of tv shows we had before it all turned to crap. the drum beats on these baker series are as fresh as i can remember. i still laugh at the fall and its been 30 years! good memories. good lessons too. =D
This one features same characters in others such as the man who counts the spiders and the kid with the nickels - interesting how they lined them up with same characters I didnt realise that
I don't think i've seen this in 30 years and yet i still laugh at the baker falling down the stairs like i did when i was 6. Laughing out loud sure is good for the soul.
I remember they used to air this one more than any of the other numbers. Eventually I started thinking 'there's other numbers kids need to know besides this one.' Nevertheless I've always enjoyed this sketch. Thanks for posting it.
lol, omg, that baker is still so funny, Someone should still shout, "WATCH OUT BAKER!" Whenever he starts to come down the steps. And what's with that guy in that graduation outfit?.
It's a 1969-era steryotypical professor. In those days, it was assumed that professors wore the cap and gown when teaching. The one (stereotype look) I never understood is why do old-time accountants or card dealers wear a visor?
@HoustonRules Dealers and accountants were usually working under fairly bright lights for hours, so the green eyeshade/visor reduced eyestrain, headaches, etc. Either better lighting and more frequent breaks for casino dealers, or use of computers instead of paper ledgers, reduced the need for them in both professions.
I've never understood that, either. Why would an accountant need to wear a visor? All stereotypes are based in truth, so clearly some accountants used to wear visors in their offices. I just can't imagine what the heck for. XD
OK, it's just Jim Henson's voice, I've been schooled. I remember my little sister simply could not DEAL with the seven spooky spiders. She ran from the room every time! :D
Ah, the 70's! Could you even do a kids show segment like this today? Or would the lawsuits come pouring in..."my kid went into an epileptic siezure!" :D
I loved this segment as a kid. It really hit you over the head. The number 7 was like some kind of superstar! You had to love it cause it was so over the top. Counting rocks!
It's funny about the Family Guy spoof because there's such a distinct age cutoff for who in the audience would get the joke and who wouldn't. Sesame Street stopped showing the Baker series in 1988 or '89. So people born after about 1986 or '87 would have no clue what that joke was about. Anyone born before that most likely would.
@Marbles471 One of the things I love about Family Guy is that series creator Seth MacFarlane (along with, I think, many of the writers) is right about the same age that I am. So there are many pop-culture references that only my generation mainly gets!
Actually, the Family Guy spoof of the baker is in the episode "I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar". I've just watched that episode. It's in Season 2. I always wondered what it was referencing, now I know!
since Jim Henson is no longer alive, I don't know if that will happen, but I would love to see the # 1, I think I saw it one time and I never saw it again
I remember seeing on Wikipedia that the Song of 10 did originally have 10 Indians instead of bells. However, being born in '86, the bells version is the only one I remember ever seeing
I have it but I missed the counting up to 10 at the beginning. I'm not sure what everybody means about the "bells" version. The kid throwing down the 10 bells is the only version there is. The sound effects of each bell as it organizes in two rows is not different from the one they aired over 35 years ago.
Actually, what I meant by "bells" version and sound effects were that the "Song Of (Ten)" sketch origionally had "Ten Indians" but were then replaced with "Ten Bells" a few years later, and as for the sound effects,I meant that the current video up here has sound effects like a "Boing" and "Ding" when the baker was falling down the stairs and if I remember correctly, they were not origionally there.
I know what you mean about the stupid new sounds added to 10. Where did you hear that it used to be 10 Indians? The "10 bells" is the only one I remember and I've been watching these since the early 70's. You could tell by the film and the style of the kid that it dated back to the original. I think the "10 Indians" was a rumor or a mistake that someone posted.
If we ever find #1, can the title be "Sesame Street - Baker #1... at long last!"?
I had thinking up ideas for an 11 skit and a 12 skit. The items may vary, but how about these desserts? Are you happy with "11 vanilla-topped pies" and "12 upside-down pineapple cakes?" That'd really bring the poor baker to O.R. lol.

Spilling a whole group of desserts is not wanted when for real.
For spilling a whole group of desserts, as long as it's 100% fake, falling down the stairs is not wanted when in real life.
The best thing for America to do is to use drop zones plus "Family Feud" mushroom-style buzzers.

The kid with the seven nickles is a VERY young Brian Henson. He also showed up in the baker #3, with the "3 peas"
