in cs4 use the selection tool select all or part of an image, then go to Edit from the file menu and select "content aware scale" an you will get resize handles to do the basic stuff you see at the begining of the vid.

gotta search for tutorials on how to do the more cooler things though.

Gradient magnitude is pretty computationally intensive; I wouldn't think you'd be able to render in real time on most consumer boxes these days. Does the algorithm just use a local approximation?

Gradient magnitude (it's used for Edge Detection) is pretty fast, I think the calculation of the minimal energy path is (or was) much more important subject for optimization.

I know what it's for. A gradient is a sum of partial derivatives, which can only be defined on smooth surfaces. For that reason to calculate it you need to interpolate a manifold from your data points, typically with the Fourier Transform, a very expensive operation for large images. That's why I asked if the algorithm used a local approximation like Laplace or Sobel. The energy path can be found by a comparison sort, about O n*logn by Stirling's approximation.

There are many ways to count the gradient mag or similar function. For an example you can count linear difference in 2*2 pixels matrix for each pixel, or use quadratic approximation for 3*3 matrix. That's pretty fast and it will work giving better or worse quality.

It is very big number to direct sort for a moderate picture. This is subject of dynamic programming, and those guys had to use one of approaches.

Fuckin' impressive indeed - and it actually seems to work pretty well (as long as there's some background covering the whole length or bridth of the picture on at least one side). The option in PS CS 4 is called content-aware scale under "edit". Check it out.

I can run Final Cut Pro and Maya rendering at the same time, and I still have a good amount of memory left. I run it on a two year old iMac with a 2.16 GHz processor and 4 gigs or ram. I tried doing the same on a PC, it couldn't even handle Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle at the same time xD

PCs are great for gaming, but when it comes to work, go for a Mac. I'm not a fanboy, since I use both PC and Mac at school, I'm just saying what I find best to use.
