@mulleops I love that track. Never been able to drum to it very well though - it is incredibly difficult!!!! I have improved a hell of a lot over the past couple of years, so maybe I could do it now - not sure! I'll see :-)
In my case it took me about 30 years to get it anything like this. There are plenty of drummers out there who reckon they can play it when they have only been playing for three years. I guess that makes them geniuses and me either a dam slow learner or incompetent.
Personally, I think every Police track is extremely difficult, and requires a high level of skill and a lot of experience. I find them all horribly difficult.
Your timing is ok, but watch Stewart Copeland Masterclass, need to relax and flow with the tune (no need to lift your shoulder) very good for a self -tought drummer though
@misterio34 Many thanks for that. Yes, my style is horribly tense, though I think it has improved a lot with my more recent videos (this was my first ever YouTube vid), particularly now that I am using wooden drum sticks and a Roland drum kit - I am flowing and hitting everything properly, instead of trying not to annoy my neighbours too much and playing with Flix sticks :-)
Very good. I like your videos. I would like to know why you are not earning money with you tube? Is it because you're using copyrighted music? you need to make videos authentic. Give drum lessons. I think you deserve to make money with videos.
I have never been on YouTube to make money, that's for sure. It is just fun and sharing my love of Genesis and The Police and drumming. I have been amazed and humbled at how popular my stuff is. For sure, if I WAS making money, this would be a breach of copyright and none of these videos would be permitted.
I don't give drum lessons - no time. My band, my work with iGenesis, and my jouxplan drum videos, is more than enough for me!
very impressive!!! You playing like the great STeward Copeland himself, don t care about the negativ comments. Your a great and fine drummer!!!! Greatings from germany/Leipzig
one question: what kind of cymbals did you using on your kit?
@Generalesserk1 Thank you! Happily, I get very few negative comments, and when I do, if they are not constructive, I ignore them. I am more aware than anyone else of my own shortcomings!!
Cymbals - these are all zildjians. If you look on my Channel for the link to my 'jouxplan' website, you will find on there details and close up pics, of the kit :-)
"Why are shot trying to imitate great musicians as....? " Are you sure that you know something about music? I know that you have to be original but well, not everyone is Bach!!
Why are people complaining so much about this video? Isn't this what Youtube is for, to upload videos to be viewed by other people, not for a purpose, just because you can?
@kakuserver Por lo que veo, eres un amargado que te metes en videos de gente que te da mil vueltas en todos los sentidos, sólo para criticar. ¡Das pena muchacho!
My purpose is to defend myself against guys like you who believe that people enjoy watching videos on youtube.com to see guys with no talent. There are other guys who do the same to you but they do well. You could look at other videos.
I have many friends. If you want, I'll introduce you to some of them. I play on songs by other drummers, but not upload videos. I play in bars and small theaters and people applaud. Here is my self-esteem. You could try.
@kakuserver I am always intrigued by musicians who come onto YouTube and then proceed to be very unpleasant to us amateurs on YouTube who are having fun. It says an awful lot about a person when they seek to be so unpleasant. In my book, a musician has no business slagging off another - that is not what music is all about. In my experience, people like you have a huge chip on their shoulder. Why? It is you who have the issues, not the rest of us. Why are you so jealous?
I really do not understand some people like you, adults, they intend to do covers. What do you seek? To raise self-esteem? Do not have musician friends? Why are shot trying to imitate great musicians as coppeland? I really feel sorry for you. Keep practicing. Get friends. Make a video with your band. That it will be better.
@kakuserver whats your purpose of posting harsh comments? to raise self-esteem? do you not have friends? why can't you just enjoy the fact that someone was inspired enough by a great musician like stewart copeland to learn one of the police's songs and have fun jamming to it?
@kakuserver Hello, only just seen all this. My, my, you are a very angry chap aren't you? What do I seek? Fun. Sharing. That's what YouTube is about. I have plenty of musician friends. I play in a blues rock band, and a classic rock band. I also play in an international Genesis Tribute Band. I have no need to raise my self esteem. I am quite content, thank you. It is you I feel sorry for actually. People like you make me laugh - you have no idea how silly you look when you post such comments!
Allright, while I was waiting for the video to upload, I read the comments. They made me to wait for something big. Now, after seeing this vid, I can tell ya I wasn't that impressed. It was normal, but nothing special. Dunno why so this time.
@Heisssask Hmmmmmmmmm. Well, this was my first ever video on YouTube, and for my part, I don't like it anymore - I think my more recent version is much better.
"It was normal" - Well a lot of people find this very hard, so I am not sure it is 'normal' - are you trying to upset everyone who can't play it? I find it very hard to play, and as you have seen from the comments, most people think my attempt is better than normal.
BTW, I see that your channel says you are 14 years old............
@jouxplan No I am not trying to upset people, I'm just saying what I think, that's what I am. "A lot of people find this very hard" - it can be hard but - THIS IS NOT PERSONAL - when playing it this way I gotta say it's not very hard, but how it is played in the album it is hard. Check out for example Claude, he truly rocks it out.

@jouxplan I gotta say: if you get bemused because there's at least one person who doesn't like your playing THAT'S bemusing to me.
And about my age, interpretting peoples opinions and discussions by age, ethnic, or any other reason is quite discriminatory. Like if I told ya I'm a muslim you'd run away screaming "Don't blow yourself yet!"
shut the fu## up. I work in electricity in Austrailia. my brother probably sold his guitars etc, i tell you now, there is nothing wrong with the sound of jouxplan, unless you are some sort of perfectionist wierdo. but he is not playing in a venue. He is making a recording. When you make a recording, you use RECORDING gear. This is not rocket science. Like i said, the playing was great. The sound was poor. I point you to videos by Super C Music, and Cobus on how a video CAN sound when miked up.
I know of 3 drummers, that have used youtube videos to get gigs. All of them have decent videos, and the sound was a KEY part of the package.
@brothaman007 Like I said, I like to keep my YouTube vids simple. I think that has been a part of the huge success of my videos, worldwide. Makes my stuff more accessible. Many drum covers on YoiTube are so mixed you can't really hear the guy that uploaded it, which I say is a BAD thing, and a shame.
I never set out to use YouTube to 'get gigs'. I already have gigs and offers and am working with a cyberspace band. And I got a stick endorsement deal. So my vids have worked pretty well for me!
@magicdicko oooffffff! I would not say I have improved it! It is very kind of you to say so, but let's face it: Copeland's drumming is 'un-improvable' and it is hard enough for all of to just try and copy what he did, never mind improve it :-)
@yulelovethebeats There are things that Stewart overdubbed, but yes, you can get it fairly close. My more recent version of this ('Another Message In A Bottle') is I think, much more accurate than this one - have a look :-)
YouTube is full of hate comments, and I have got used to it - thankfully it is rare for me. I suspect jealousy is often the cause, though sometimes it is just spite for spite's sake, and occasionally, and shamefully, it's sometimes actually half decent musicians!! Such musicians have a real confidence issue IMO, and instead of encouraging others, they belittle everyone. Disgusting.
Listen "jouxplan" you did great dont listen to these people, so what you missed a couple notes who cares really.....its always good to do some covers your own way, thats what makes a good drummer, CREATIVITY. All in all you did well my friend....and thats all that matters
Don't worry, I do not listen to these people, and am constantly amused by coments like this. I know what I do is not the perfection that certain people seem to insist on - but then again, that is exactly why I have a day job and am not and never will be a pro drummer!
Knowing the limits of one's own capablity, and being humble enough to admit this, is the key in my view to being a decent amateur musician. Too many on YouTube cannot do this.
@jouxplan Dont ever say that man......if you really want to you can be a pro drummer.......all it takes is dedication and spirit.....and obviously practice, but then again what doesn't.........i think if you really wanted to you could.....never doubt yourself my friend......
@geoff7994 It is always tempting to say "please get a life", to comments like this, but I shall refrain.
I hit at least a hundred notes wrong in this, my first ever video on YouTube. You may enjoy my more recent, and more accurate version of this song, which has a lot less mistakes, but which still is by no means the perfection you clearly seek. You can then point out the flaws in that one too if it makes you feel happier.
For my part, I enjoy playing these to the best of my limited ability
@raventoot Yes the sound is not great but really, I did this video for the drumming rather than for the quality of the audio. The recorder is merely a camcorder - there are no drum mics.
@RyanLies Hey, thank you! And my wife will be delighted you like the garden! It is very nice having the garden to look at whilst drumming, I have to admit :-)
Hey dude, sounds good! If I may just give a tip, :) Try using a bit more dynamics when you play. For example, in the verse and pre-chorus, try and keep the volume of your snare and bass a bit lower. It just means that when you get to the Chorus, its a lot easier to create a build and make the song rock! Apart from that, sounds incredibly tight man.
@Thousandfeetdown Ha! Ha! I thank you! To be honest, I am at the limit of my ability here, and trying to play the verse / pre-chorus a bit quieter.........no way!!!!!! I have to play balls out, or it don't work for me! Seriously - I do agree with you, it's just a bit hard for me! Have you seen my more recent version of this - it is a LOT better, I think, though still lacks dynamics :-(
dude, i noticed something that really bugs me. from 1:01-1:30, you're supposed to play lefty on hi-hat to build endureance in the left side of your body. nobody seems to do it right.
@dsdrummerguy I'm sorry if it bugs you, but frankly, what is with the 'supposed'? Who says how you are 'supposed' to play this? I'll play it how I like, thanks - and I sure am not good enough to play to your high standards.
The reason no one 'does it right' (your definition) is 'cos none of us are good enough, me included.
Personally, if it sounds about right, that's good enough for me.
i learned over the years to have patience. no matter how much of a pain in the ass it is, you shold try to do everything the right way first. trust me on this one =)
@dsdrummerguy Having been drumming for the past 36 years without ever having lessons, I know all about having patience! It is a long hard road when no one is teaching you :-)
I took issue with the 'supposed' because it gives the wrong impression to lots of beginners on here who try this song out - it is hard enough to drum along to this 'normally' without someone telling them they are 'supposed' to use their weaker hand on the hi hats! And I dispute this anyway :-)
Kool Drumming Rhythm is Life never to old to play im 46 still playing its been 30 years of playing and the journey continues never made it to the top but who cares thats not what its about what you did on the video is what its about i could see you enjoyed that and thats what its about Keep Rockin man the world needs it
Cymbals - from left (nearest camera) - 8" Zildjian A custom splash; 15" zildjian paper thin (vintage circa 1986); 10" A custom splash; 16" A custom crash; 22" zildjian Impulse ride (vintage circa 1986) and a 15" zildjian K Mini china.
Lots more detail about kit on my jouxplan website (link on my channel).
ur wicked u shud be in a band but to really test u i would try this song by level 42 where the drummer plays all the tomtoms in one go going down he does it (the guy) so fast it sounds like a machine gun. i know cus my dad went to school with the drummer but great work mate (im 14)
thats fucking unbelievable! i know you probably dont have time, but if you put a police cover band together, you could be loaded! by the way, i just looked at "simoxnirvana1"s profile (dont waste your time looking) hes a talentless sack of shit! its painfully obvious that hes jealous!
As for simonxnirvana1 - unfortunately we all get heckler's like him from time to time. I find it amusing that such people embarrass themselves in front of all of us!
hi jouxplan-I must say i still prefer this version you done!! what do you do for a living? you put on your profile details we would not believe you, go on tell us lol
Shit. This comes up every now and then. Er, if I say that I wear a suit and I am the boss and I own the company and there are 50 staff and that it is a consultancy and laboratory dealing with contaminated land, will this ruin everything?
No one in my field of business believes that I am a drummer in my other life - it is not really the done thing! I am a bit of a maverick I guess.
I hope everyone is still gonna talk to me on here now :-(
Maybe, but the way I record, I have no choice. Just a camcorder and a cd player, no mics or mixing. So I got to be relatively quiet.
I happen to prefer playing with my Flix. Have not played with wood since 1987 - long story - see my website, link on my channel.
Flix can be used for whatever music you like, though admittedly using it to play metal would be a bit foolish! I think they work well enough on these vids of mine, and I use them when I gig and in studio :-)
hmm the recording might be snare... but everytime ive seen copeland play it live he uses rimshots pretty much through the whole song :S i dunno haha..
For what it is worth, I think this song is incredibly complex and has way more going on than people perhaps realise at first. The more you try and copy it, the more you realise you are missing stuff out! It's taken me many, many years.
If you like this vid, may I humbly suggest you look at my second cover / vid of this, 'Another Message In A Bottle' - that is way more accurate. It's in my Police covers Playlist on my Channel
First of all. Outstanding job playing that one. I'm a drummer, been playing for over 20 years. I know this one is tricky. You are very talented. Good job.
My band has decided to add this one to our set list. I decided to see how other people play it. Its so much easier to watch a video to learn a song. You nailed this one. I was able to get a handle on this one by watching you. Great technique!!! Thanks!!!
If you think I nailed this one, and you found this video helpful, may I humbly direct you to my more recent 're-make' of this? In January this year I did it again, and it is far more accurate, I think! It's on my channel - 'Another Message'.
I am sorry, but I have no experience of electronic drums, and so I cannot give advice about Roland or Yamaha. As far as I know, they are BOTH good! Try them, and go with what seems best for you.
I love it man, but I am not sure you got the hi hat stuff quite right (just going by memory).
I will have to pull out my cds and listen to the original again.
Great stuff man.

Excellent. I thought Stewart had overdubbed the part. Thank you for the enlightenment.
yulelovethebeats 1 year ago
@yulelovethebeats There are things that Stewart overdubbed, but yes, you can get it fairly close. My more recent version of this ('Another Message In A Bottle') is I think, much more accurate than this one - have a look :-)
Many thanks!

Im not really understand why people wrote this kind of paper ...
it s only jealousy and i would like to see them on this kind of exercice.
Personnaly i really appreciate your job, as i began last year, im often supprised
by performance and in your case, it s a dream to hear you and i imagine that is a lot of hours every days. Thanks for that !! Best regards
BILBO24H 1 year ago
@BILBO24H Thank you for your very kind comments!
Disgusting.
Be humble and encourage everyone, is my motto :-)

Listen "jouxplan" you did great dont listen to these people, so what you missed a couple notes who cares really.....its always good to do some covers your own way, thats what makes a good drummer, CREATIVITY. All in all you did well my friend....and thats all that matters
ProDrummer84 1 year ago
@ProDrummer84 Hey, thank you for the support :-)
Don't worry, I do not listen to these people, and am constantly amused by coments like this. I know what I do is not the perfection that certain people seem to insist on - but then again, that is exactly why I have a day job and am not and never will be a pro drummer!
Knowing the limits of one's own capablity, and being humble enough to admit this, is the key in my view to being a decent amateur musician. Too many on YouTube cannot do this.
jouxplan 1 year ago
@jouxplan Dont ever say that man......if you really want to you can be a pro drummer.......all it takes is dedication and spirit.....and obviously practice, but then again what doesn't.........i think if you really wanted to you could.....never doubt yourself my friend......

he played wrong during "a year has passed since i wrote my note " he hit the toms wrong
geoff7994 1 year ago
@geoff7994 It is always tempting to say "please get a life", to comments like this, but I shall refrain.
I hit at least a hundred notes wrong in this, my first ever video on YouTube. You may enjoy my more recent, and more accurate version of this song, which has a lot less mistakes, but which still is by no means the perfection you clearly seek. You can then point out the flaws in that one too if it makes you feel happier.
For my part, I enjoy playing these to the best of my limited ability

sound is bad its not from the drum its because of the place where drums are or because of the recorder
raventoot 1 year ago
@raventoot Yes the sound is not great but really, I did this video for the drumming rather than for the quality of the audio. The recorder is merely a camcorder - there are no drum mics.

@RyanLies Hey, thank you! And my wife will be delighted you like the garden! It is very nice having the garden to look at whilst drumming, I have to admit :-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
Hey dude, sounds good! If I may just give a tip, :) Try using a bit more dynamics when you play. For example, in the verse and pre-chorus, try and keep the volume of your snare and bass a bit lower. It just means that when you get to the Chorus, its a lot easier to create a build and make the song rock! Apart from that, sounds incredibly tight man.
Thousandfeetdown 1 year ago
@Thousandfeetdown Ha! Ha! I thank you! To be honest, I am at the limit of my ability here, and trying to play the verse / pre-chorus a bit quieter.........no way!!!!!! I have to play balls out, or it don't work for me! Seriously - I do agree with you, it's just a bit hard for me! Have you seen my more recent version of this - it is a LOT better, I think, though still lacks dynamics :-(

dude, i noticed something that really bugs me. from 1:01-1:30, you're supposed to play lefty on hi-hat to build endureance in the left side of your body. nobody seems to do it right.

jouxplan 1 year ago
@dsdrummerguy I'm sorry if it bugs you, but frankly, what is with the 'supposed'? Who says how you are 'supposed' to play this? I'll play it how I like, thanks - and I sure am not good enough to play to your high standards.
The reason no one 'does it right' (your definition) is 'cos none of us are good enough, me included.
Personally, if it sounds about right, that's good enough for me.
jouxplan 1 year ago
i learned over the years to have patience. no matter how much of a pain in the ass it is, you shold try to do everything the right way first. trust me on this one =)
dsdrummerguy 1 year ago
@dsdrummerguy Having been drumming for the past 36 years without ever having lessons, I know all about having patience! It is a long hard road when no one is teaching you :-)
I took issue with the 'supposed' because it gives the wrong impression to lots of beginners on here who try this song out - it is hard enough to drum along to this 'normally' without someone telling them they are 'supposed' to use their weaker hand on the hi hats! And I dispute this anyway :-)
jouxplan 1 year ago
Kool Drumming Rhythm is Life never to old to play im 46 still playing its been 30 years of playing and the journey continues never made it to the top but who cares thats not what its about what you did on the video is what its about i could see you enjoyed that and thats what its about Keep Rockin man the world needs it

ur wicked u shud be in a band but to really test u i would try this song by level 42 where the drummer plays all the tomtoms in one go going down he does it (the guy) so fast it sounds like a machine gun. i know cus my dad went to school with the drummer but great work mate (im 14)
coolboystouse 1 year ago

I AM in a band! It's called Cornerstone, and you can see a video of us playing live, on my Cghannel page :-)
Level42 were an incredibly tight band. Very funky, very difficult to copy. Anyway, you have not said WHICH Level42 track you are talking about!
Your Dad went to school with the drummer? Amazing!

thats fucking unbelievable! i know you probably dont have time, but if you put a police cover band together, you could be loaded! by the way, i just looked at "simoxnirvana1"s profile (dont waste your time looking) hes a talentless sack of shit! its painfully obvious that hes jealous!

Fair enough!
I hope everyone is still gonna talk to me on here now :-(
jouxplan 2 years ago
nope it will ruin nothing, to be honest i thought you were gonna say you were a policeman or a grave digger lol
bigmuso1 2 years ago
grave digger lol!!!!
That would have been a lot funnier, certainly!
jouxplan 2 years ago
Awesome, but you shouldn't have used brushes for this.
13thBarcodeDrummer 2 years ago
its not brushes its a cross between brushes and sticks, called flikstix.
bigmuso1 2 years ago
Sticks would have sounded better. The things he's using are more for world music.
13thBarcodeDrummer 2 years ago
The beauty of these sticks though is they have adjustable rings on them so you can get variable effect!! brilliant invention if i may say so myself.
bigmuso1 2 years ago
I used a set in college, i think they work well for some types of reggae, but not ska. Im a jazz drummer myself.
What kind of stuff do you play?
13thBarcodeDrummer 2 years ago
I play rock mainly, but more into guitar these days, play accoustic and electric.
bigmuso1 2 years ago
Cool, iv never picked a guitar up, been playing drums for 6 years, currently in six form college studying 3 A levels in music.
13thBarcodeDrummer 2 years ago
Cheers!
I think they work well enough on these vids of mine, and I use them when I gig and in studio :-)

wow man relax your to tense when u play haha... also use rimshots at the start instead of snare ... otherwise really good:)
MitchOshea91 2 years ago
My style is very tense! Not much I can do about it :-) Reasons for this poor style are on the FAQ page of my jouxplan website - link on my channel.
Rimshots at beginning? Really? I have always heard it as snare flams.
Have a look at my other version of this anyway ('Another Message') - it is much more accurate, although I still play with the same tense style :-)
Many thanks!
jouxplan 2 years ago
hmm the recording might be snare... but everytime ive seen copeland play it live he uses rimshots pretty much through the whole song :S i dunno haha..
MitchOshea91 2 years ago
Ahhh! Ok, I had not thought about the live version. I am sure the original is snare flams. I'll have to have a look at a live version :-)
jouxplan 2 years ago

startrektngfan03 2 years ago
That's very kind of you - glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks!!!
VMXGroove 2 years ago
That also is very high praise - thank you!
If you think I nailed this one, and you found this video helpful, may I humbly direct you to my more recent 're-make' of this? In January this year I did it again, and it is far more accurate, I think! It's on my channel - 'Another Message'.
Good luck with your band!

At 0'47 I am playing a single pedal, like I am throughout the whole song!!
My left leg is bouncing up and down on the hi-hat pedal, in quarter notes - you can see the hi hat opening and closing! This happens at 0'47!
Why would I lie, anyway?!!
Have a look at my new version of this song 'Another Message' (see my channel) - you can see the pedal much easier! SINGLE pedal!!!!
