eukharistía (εὐχαριστία) derives from eú- "good, well" + kháris "favor, grace".= the one in good graces or the the thankful one = St. Eucharius (feast day 12/8) -- he was the first bishop of Trier, Hildegard wrote this song for him.
The song is originally in latin. Euchari is greec and means transformation, change. When wine or bread turns into blood or flesh, it´s that kind of transformation. "leta via" means 'deadly road' or path. It probably signifies that Jesus walking of the Golgata meant that change, in that he took the sins of people on hi´s shoulders.
I saw her in Lund 2002 with Garmarna. They were incredible with their performance of Hildegard von Bingen. They blew Emma Kirkby, well-known interpretor, away to another galaxy. She came out to the audience afterwards and talked. Typical cool behaviour by people from north Sweden.
Emma has really amazing voice which mixed with great folk-inspired music gives on of the best bands I've ever heard (Garmarna gives me hell of a goosbumps ;)) For those who like Emma's voice: you should also try another band she's vocalist in: Triakel. Sława!
You're confused, I'm afraid. :-) This is indeed the song "Euchari" from the album "Hildegard Von Bingen". Hildegard was a famous German abbess (and later saint) who lived in medieval times. This song (as are all songs of this album, I think) is based on a melody she composed. In this case in honor of Saint Eucharius, who was the first bishop of Treves and who is said to have protected the city from an epidemic of pestilence.
I'm afraid you're both confused. :-) This is indeed the song "Euchari" from "Vedergällningen", which is loosely based on the song "Euchari" from the album "Hildegard Von Bingen". Yes, two different songs with the sametitle from two different albums. The one from "Bingen" is entirely in Latin, and far less catchy. "Halling Jåron" is the song after "Euchari" on "Vedergällningen" ("Vengeance" in English), about a stupid girl who goes to bed with every boy.
You're right, those are two different versions. (both based on the works of Hildegard von Bingen) I stand corrected, then. Thanks for the clarification! :-)
Not really. Hildegard von Bingen was German, and her music is all written in the general style of catholic liturgic chants, traditionally credited as the invention of Pope Gregory I around A.D. 600. Hildegard's compositional style were however more melismatic and free-flowing than usual, though still strictly monophonic (for only one voice.)
We know very little about liturgical music in the Northern countries at the time. But we do have one hymn from the Orkneys (they were Norwegian at the time), notated around 1280 (a century after Hildegard). It is however a revolutionary piece of music, being probably the world's very first example of true polyphony ("multivoicedness"). So modern music may indeed be the invention of Norsemen.
Hildegard is a German nun from the 12th century and the original Euchari is entirely in Latin. (Garmana added the Swedish lines and mixed them with the basic melody and excerpts from the Latin lyrics)
Thank you for posting this video, I love it. I don't understand the language, but like German for me, I find this one really beautiful too. The band is great, if it wasn't for these videos, I wouldn't had become so suddenly obsessed with them! XD Now I know a new cool band! ^^ So, thanks!

O Euchari In leta via
The sun`s warmth trickled into you
Like the fragrance of balm.

Like the fragrance of balm.
All moving things breathe steadily
Sweeping across the ground

Like the fragrance of balm.

In the heat of our longing.

Euchari is from the Greek, but it doesn't mean transformation or change. It references giving thanks, or gratitude.

isn't this song called "halling jåron" on their album "vedergällningen"? i think "euchari" is quite a different song... or maybe i'm confused?

is euchari form 'Hildegard von Bingen' what clerical swedish songs generally sound like? (referring to the melodic line of the voice of course)
irinatl89 2 years ago
