When I buy a new genset, first thing I do is drain the factory oil and I normally find debris in it as I run it through a screen filter. Then I fill it with some new oil and run it for about 2 hours under a varying but moderate load to seat the rings. Then I dump that oil and fill with a full synthetic, and you are good for 250-500 hours of runtime. But one should be checking oil condition every 24 hours of runtime at least.
That is a great genset, my dad has one...but it does have a duty cycle and needs to have the oil checked and changed every so many hours of run time. With that aux. fuel system you need to resist the temptation to run it 24/7..
Hey, about the toughest homes you can build on a homestead (or just about anywhere) are American Ingenuity Domes or Monolithic Domes. They don't even "blink" at an F5 tornado!
How far along have you come? I was in your shoes back in 1998-1999. I have been offgrid ever since. Using 800 watts pc..500 watts wind and a dc propane genset that's about 1500 watts at 1800 rpm.
Do you live near a town? Is social isolation a problem up there? If so have you found a solution to it? Thanks. I am contemplating moving out to a more rural area also but the possibility of being alone scares the you know what out of me.
I often day dream about living just like this. The only thing i would do different is run the generator on either home-made fuel or maybe this simple yet effective device.
Check out the marine stores where smaller fishing boats are sold for good quality jerry-can style gas tanks with a built in pickup and sifon/pressure bulb for use as the external fuel tank. Some even come with an external hose that could be modified for the generator cap as described in this video.
Since you made yourself a custom fuel tank system, I wonder if you could make a video show casing the things you did that might be considered custom or jerry-rigged.
Great idea. A simpler solution that would probably cost about the same as all the fittings would be to use marine fuel tanks like would be used with outboard engines. Keep up the good work!
Excellent video!. i have been using this same gen for over 6 years. Not only for remote work, but as a backup gen for my home. The only thing i don't care for (and it's a VERY small thing) is it's not easy to drain the fuel system for storage. I managed to figure a way tho, and this machines virtues FAR outweigh any small, nit-picky inconveniences. Also, it IS a 2000i..so running ANY sensitive electronics are no problem due to it's modified sine wave.
If you lines are empty how long does it take for you generator to bring the fuel from the can to the cap? Does it make a difference on how fast it brings it in if your generator tank is full or not?
Your videos are so inspiring and constructive. I can hardly wait to get onto my land and get started with gardening and other projects. The world is astir and events are happening fast; I am reading, studying and trying to learn all I can while time lingers. I am elderly and disabled but I know God will lead me to someone who will help me and in turn I will be a help to them mentoring them in things that must be done. May God help us all be ready to meet Him in peace.
Hey cody, i have spent quite a few cold winters in a trailer, and if you plan to i strongly suggest you build a small shelter outiside your front door, and put a woodstove in it, since you can get your own firewood this would make keeping warm easy, and it's a great place to keep large tools and stuff out of the way.
hopefully you are able to get alot of work done on site living on the location for a while... especially that garden!!
alot of information in this video i will try to review again and take notes later...
/// yeah, youre right about the goodness of your family, i wish my folks were as interested in my future as yours are...they wont buy or loan me cash for a tool shed to live in much less a trailer...they sold my grandfathers land also :(
Another Great Video , I spent around 20yrs in the RV bussiness . You might want to buy a 12 0r 18 gal marine tank and do the same set up . Its what I for an extra tank at home . As cold as its gonna get up ther I would sugest to isulate the bottom and build a small wall around it to block the wind and such .And a real good set of wooden steps !
I wish you the best in getting that house sold and setting up your awesome new OTG homestead. Hoping to get started on my own next year (or ASAP, really).
@beast12101 I understand. Sorry, I re-read what I wrote last night and I can totally see how I sounded like a real jerk, so I wanted to apologize for that.
Ive been working with small engines for 25 years and your extra fuel set-up is the safest and most well thought out ive ever seen. I WILL be borrowing you idea,, i.e. great idea. thanks.
sweet race can mods... do you have to open the vents on the cans? and also if you disconnect from everything "still leaving the the hose that is on top of the generator cap" will it run with no vent?
Some friends of mine lived in a camping trailer while they build there home. They put up a poll barn over the camper and used it for equipment after the house was built. They saved a ton of money and rolled it back into there new home. Took almost two years to complete.
Congrats on the new trailer. I have been keeping an eye on the Honda EU generators ever since I saw a review done by Analytical Survival. I really liked your increased gas tank capacity idea. Should give you hours or additional run time. Good luck on the OHP!!!
I was also wondering about venting the aux gas cans... What is your estimated run time on those two tanks before you're empty? Also, how far off the beaten trail is your new place? How far would you have to travel back into town to purchase fuel for the generator and propane for the trailer? I enjoy watching these video's showing the step by step process. I think it will be very cool to watch this project from the beginning to completion.
great info Cody, thanks! I have that same generator, I bought mine new and I love it. I take it camping and I also take it on the lake with me as a means of re-charging my batteries on my Bass boat (just in case) I was considering an axillary gas tank set up also but didn't want to mess up the cap but as you have shown it ain't too bad a deal. Thanks again
I like what you are doing Cody. I will put in my two cents worth of advice. If your house sells and you are going to stay up there buy a 500 gallon propane tank and a large gas tank (like you would have in the back of your truck to fuel cat--it will be usefull later) I would hate to be short on fuel to cook and heat with in the dead of winter. If you skirt the trailer it will help with heating and pipes freezing. This is very doable. Have you looked at what frontier families lived in!
Not sure if you've already considered this, but uscarbDOT com makes a propane conversion for that Honda generator. I was thinking about doing that with my Honda EU3000 so I don't have to worry about the gas getting gunky in storage. Thanks for the vid.
I live in a suburbia with my dad and we actually use propane tanks like that to help heat our house, which has saved a lot of money. He can get the propane tanks for free at work.
Living in a camper is not to bad. I have lived in my camper for almost a year now and its a 1973 20ft i bought with my tax return and i live next ot my sons place for now and i have to use water cans (nothing works inside) but the famaly has a 1/3rd ac in the mountians i am planning to move to if i can gain employment again / you can see a walk around of my camper in my uploads

Brother have you done any research on methane digestors? You can produce methane to run a generator or cook with from human waste, food scraps ext.
God bless, I'll see you on the golden streets.
