I would agree about the straight stem being better for gurgle...it doesn't so much prevent gurgling, but they are MUCH easier to clear up with a pipe cleaner.
I've noticed that with straight pipes, the moisture often runs down the stem right into your mouth. The bitter, sour, disgusting taste can ruin an otherwise great smoke. Which is why I usually hold my straight pipes at a very slight downward angle.
Why do you not like Churchwardens? The longer stem provides a cooling effect, you get the "Gandalf" feeling, and they are typically not very expensive.
I actually stick a pipe cleaner down the stem and shank as I'm smoking. That soaks up most of the saliva, and clears it out a little. Do it gently though, as to not disturb the carbon build up in the shank or the bowl.
A pipe cleaner's helical design will not wick moisture out of a pipe if left overnight, very well. The capillary action is the wrong orientation. You need a fiber woven more like a candle wick, or better yet striated like a fiber optic cable. The private free market industry of my nation has spent millions of dollars on this kind of research.
From my understandings and dealings, the best way to keep pipes from gurgling is to take your pipe out of you mouth if you're not smoking it; or, if you need to leave it in, put your tongue over the hole to keep the condensation in your mouth from entering the pipe.
I have two pipes in particular that gurgle and spit pipe juice back at me while smoking....that will kill your smoke. These are both newer pipes, is it a chance they just arent' broken in yet? The are 2 of the best looking nicest pipes I have but the smoke is very moist, you can sense the humidity in the smoke and I cant taste the tobacco as well as in my others. I guess I just need to keep breaking them in and hope they get better. One is a bent pipe, the other is a straight/quarter bent.
I've been experimenting. I found that if you start with a cold pipe that is really CLEAN you get less liquid during a smoke. I think some of the gunk that builds up turns back to liquid where it gets heated up again. Also I left my pipe on a window sill in the sun and it dried very well in the warmth.
I smoke a bent churchwarden and that thing gurgles a lot. When I smoke Prince Albert it burns so hot that i can blow through the stem and force the liquids up into the tobacco, where I can only assume that it evaporates.
i usually take a moment and dump out the spit or the liquid of whatever kind and put my bit stem back after it's dry enough to continue, then when finished i'll dry it out with a pipe cleaner and keep it apart till completely dry.
@HaleFauntaine Dude cigarettes are not gay and you shouldn't use that term so loosely especially since some cigarettes have pipe or cigar tobacco in them prime time swisher sweets to name a few
Quite a annoying problem that I've had also. I find that letting your pipe sit for about an hour or so after you pack it before you smoke it helps a lot. I also always leave a pipe cleaner inside the pipe after i clean it. After 24 hours or so when you take it out it will be kind of greasy and it will smell terrible. they really do absorb a lot of gunk that you don't want in there.
Yes, it is indeed condensation from the tobacco. Try pipe filters from Ebay ( i use 9mm) which capture the moisture and gives a lovely cool dry smoke. The wetness may also be the juices, flavourings and additives put into the tobacco at the mill.
I find that it isn't saliva, but residue from the tobacco. Some tobaccos smoke really wet and leave copious amounts of sludge in the bottom of my pipe. Comes as quite a surprising taste sensation if you accidentally get a mouthful of that crap!

Hey good vid - yet another source of pipe infomation for the masses.
Another suggestion-- is to take out the stem from your mouth between puffs.
Pipe tobacco increases saliva production leading to more of it in your mouth and down your pipe stem.
Also have you heard of Falcon pipes.
The wet pipe mans dream.
keep up the good work .

You should try. Cigars are for hard asses, pipes are for bad asses. Etherway, it's better than the gayness of cigarettes.
