I think the cranberry joke referred to sicknesses and/or deaths due to poisoning from badly-processed canned cranberries, probably at Thanksgiving in 1960 - a rather morbid subject to joke about, particularly when directed at "a little girl" (as Henny says). Certainly the audience got the joke, judging by their laughter.
