I think, Zorzi and many other involved people can not laugh for the rest of the life. Very terrible und damn accident, very shocking pictures in the head...
The one thing that I always wonder when I see these videos about this accident, is what we would've witnessed, had the second cameraman zoomed out a bit. In a way I'm glad he didn't...
Wow....The driver walks backwards and stops at 1:19 and then runs back to the car. 4 seconds later the marshals body flies through where the driver was standing..Lucky it wasn't two drivers lost in this accident.
His head was crushed! thats for sure. Whats up with idiot trying to cross in front of oncoming cars. How stupid most deaths ive seen is caused by stupidity
Vurran did not die immediatly he died going toward the pit from loss of so much blood. Pryce died instantly because the 40lb fire extinguisher Vurran was carrying hit in the upper left corner to middle of the top of the helmet hitting his head with so much force it broke his neck like a twig. This was a very nice vid and im happy to see people actually taking their time to make these vids and watch them, thank you. R.I.P to all who died in any type of accident.
@iiRapezz What do you mean Van Vurren did not die immediately? The poor guy was cut in half. You say "he didn't die immediately - he died going toward the pit from loss of so much blood." What in the world does that mean? He got up in 2 parts and went back toward the pit and then bled to death? Please. The guy never knew what hit him, he died instantly.
@smitchix1 Well first off dumbass read articles and research before you troll me. If you had done your research you would know that they picked him up and then the last piece of his body split apart and then they carried him in two where he died on his way there from loss of blood. It may be hard to comprehend do to the lack of knowledge you have, but yes it is possible for someone to survive an accident like that. Very rare but quite possible. thanks for your time to read this, have a nice day.
@trex0021 yo jus fukin look it up plz im tired of explainin it over and over he didn/t die instantly im not say he died hours later or anythin like dat im sayin he died a min or 2 goin to the ambulance
@iiRapezz everything i've read said he died upon impact having been struck at 270 km/h, though after reading some of your other posts, apparently you know everything. Anyway, I don't really think its worth arguing about, and it certainly doesn't change the horrifying nature of the accident whether he died instantly or not...
BUENO QUE ESE HIJO DE SU PUTA MADRE CONDUCTOR NO TIENE SENTIMIENTOS, PERECE QUE SOLO VIO A UN PERRO ATROPELLADO, SOLO LE PREOCUPABA SU PUTO CARRO, Y EL OTRO TIPO QUE LE IBA A AYUDAR, QUE POCA MADRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zorzi retired unfortunately right after the 'kink' where there is a mound. Drivers before the mound couldn't easily see over it. Stuck just saw the marshals running blind across the track and avoided them but Pryce couldn't see past Stuck and hit 19 yr old Van Vuuren, tearing him apart at 170mph. They had to see which marshal wasn't there afterwards to tell who it was because he was so disfigured. His fire extinguisher hit Pryce's helmet and his chinstrap cut deep into his neck, killing him.
Van Vuuren got exactly what his lack-of-common-sense-dumbass self deserved. RIP Tom Pryce. Van Vuuren should have been charged with manslaughter at the very least, ANY COMPETENT ADULT KNOWS YOU DONT RUN ONTO A RACETRACK.
@goodwilltubing I imagine it was very similar to that. At the point the fire broke out, the knee jerk reaction instinct likely set in with them seeing a driver who looked to be trapped in his car as it went ablaze. Not thinking, just trying to go help him, the two marshals ran across the track with only the idea of getting the fire put out and helping the driver to safety. Not to mention, they might have assumed that a yellow would be displayed when the fire broke out.
@snappy452 First of all you have no idea what happened. Kyalami has a blind corner called the kink on the main straight and the regulations for the marshals were if a car caught fire two marshals must run and assist the driver with two more standing in for backups if their extinguishers were not sufficient. So the marshals did what they should have done and they did check for car but due to the kink and the car travelling 250+ it took less than a second for the cars to come around the corner
@777rvm so the marshals looked and saw nothing and a second later the cars were there. So this was just a freak accident. So as a competent adult you do cross a race track if the regulations tells you to do so. Get your facts straight snappy
@777rvm If you need rules and regulations to tell you what common sense should already dictate, that you dont run out onto a racetrack under green flag conditions, then you too deserve his fate.
@snappy452 So if your job is to help others in an emergency then you will rather stand there and do nothing and wait for the red flag?? They did what they were supposed to do. The regulations today are much different from 30 years ago. This was a tragedy and one of the worst accidents in the history of the sport. May it never happen again
@777rvm Standard operating procedure as a trackside rescuer: You dont step onto the track until it is safe to do so, lest you worsen the situation. Case and point, here. Logic still applied to this 30 years ago (compare to the Roger Williamson accident where ill-equipped men did not attempt to rescue him). It will hopefully never happen again. Just an over-zealous kid with improper training (if any at all.)
@snappy452 "Pryce was directly behind Stuck's car along the main straight, Stuck himself sensed Van Vuuren and moved to the right to avoid both marshals...From his position directly behind Stuck, Pryce could not see Van Vuuren and was unable to react as quickly as Stuck had done. He struck the [...] marshal at approximately (170 mph). Van Vuuren was thrown into the air ... He died upon impact, his body being literally torn in half by Pryce's car[...] ." be informed before judging!
@derHaiins89 Im informed by logic and my survival instinct. You dont run onto a green track, because youre literally playing in traffic. How about you go dance in the highway, see how good your being informed does then.
@snappy452 you presuppose van vuuren to watch over a righthander coupled with a small hill (called the kink), thats impossible! and of course he watched for cars, no one is so dumb to not do this, especially if his life stood is at stake...
and i would go and dance on a highway if i saw that no car is approaching
@derHaiins89 I presuppose that you do not approach a situation if you cannot be sure of the safety of both yourself and any other people who might be involved. There is a reason why you dont see anyone doing stuff like this today. Also, if you plan on dancing in the highway, please have your next of kin post the video on youtube
@snappy452 #1. thats really a cruel thing to say. #2 What would you do if a car was starting to set on fire? sit on your ass and do nothing. or do what you have to do.
Of course I mourn Tom Pryce but it was not either of their faults. plus that was the old days. these days the race is stopped from a fire for safety.
As a KID I saw this accident on a videotape that my father had. The movie was called Speed Fever (F1 Febbre della Velocita). The image was so graphic that I still can remember. (p.s. I wasn't suppose to watch this tape, but you know kids)
The wrost thing is that at a first mometn Zorzi and the marshall doesn't get what's happened, like nothing is happened. And i would do the same, how can i recogniaise a HUMAN body in that conditions?
@TheArtonSlo Although it's very true and very sad and horrific, it has to be mentioned as a sidenote that Van Vuuren's death was his own - incredibly stupid - fault and was the one to thus take Pryce with self. No sane one would run across a finish line during an F1 race. This was a horribly dark day of motorsports
@GileraXR1 true but the poor guy only wanted to save zorzi who he thought was in danger...i think the real problem was the whole organization in that gp. to put a 18 years old without a training in a place like that is madness
@TheArtonSlo But Van Vuuren ran into the track without permission. Pryce had no chance to stop with-in 5 secs at 200km/h speed. Pryce was hit with a exthinguinser (40lb)...
When Pryce struck Van Vuuren, the extinguisher he was carrying pulled Pryce's helmet UP, also off, partially decapitating Pryce. The driver that Pryce hit while deceased was Jacques Laffite.
@Dustinrollbrettert I posted a thread on a forum and a troll thought it would have been funny to post the uncut footage of him being cut in two. He literally got cut in two only his spine was keeping him together
I believe the so called "2nd Marshall" (William) that people are refering to is the man who you see Zorzi, and not the man jumping over the fence in the insert at 3:27. My thought is that guy might have possibly been another marshall who was positioned down closer to where Pryce's car ended up and was coming towards Zorzi's vehicle when the collision with Van Vuuren occured.
Awful accident but also a display of some nonchalance from the driver when the fire marschall that didn´t make it across the straight wasn´t even assisted. None of eihter the other fire marschall or the driver went to try to assist the just stricken fire marschall eventhough he obviously was dead. Of course the fire marschall had a job to do in preventing a fire otherwise smoke could have obscured the vision for oncoming drivers but the didn´t do anything as soon as the fire was put out.
Through youTube one can watch (and learn) all sorts of things. It still confuses me how Renso Zorzi & the other act sort of indifferent. Did they not know what quite happened? What could they do? Fire needed extinguishing? And what is that crumpled mass of rags over there?
@kolbpilot They were probably totally shocked. Look how quickly it all happens on the film and how unclear it is, even when you've been told what's unfolding before your eyes. They were (understandably) focussing on the possibility of the car exploding, and let's face it, if anybody was in Zorzi's potentially fatal position when the flames backed up in a car full of fuel, they're heart would be thumping too. Very, very sad.
Theres 'better' footage of the incident if you know what I mean. To give an idea of how hard the hit was on Pryces helmet according to eyewitnesses the fire extinguisher ended up in the car park after flying over the grandstand,
The marshalls full name was Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren btw
Thanks for the info, LB1973. Indeed there is better footage, especially the third angle, which only last seconds (will we ever see more from this angle?), but I wanted to only show the main parts of the crash footage. So or so, it is an horrific accident and it should never had happened.
@goodwilltubing actually, the clip was supposed to be longer and it showed clearly that the fire extinguisher hit pryce's head and the helmet was almost off. unfortunately, someone flagged the clip as "shocking and disgusting' and that part of the clip was taken off. So some actual footage of pryce in front still remains a mystery.
well, when you die in an accident everyone will lol. we therefore look forward to someone posting footage of your ghastly and bloody death on you tube so we can all have a good laugh. or else, get ya fucking head examined by a psychiatrist.
@adrenf ---- pryce was driving down the track when a track/race marshall was crossing in front of him carrying a 40lb fire extinguisher the impact sent the marshall flying thru the air killing him instantly the extinguisher struck Pryce in the head with such force it killed him, his car kept going at full speed til the next corner where he hit it but was already dead by then
@ltscarecrow The extinguisher wound up in the parking lot damaging a car. I think I learned of this accident (thru youTube) 18 mos. ago & it seemed there were different clips of this back then. Pryces car continued on & collided with another car whose driver was furious with Pryce untill realizing he was dead.
Tom Pryce hit a 19 year old marshal at 170 MP/H. His death was caused by the 19 year old marshal's (Van Vuuren) fire extinguisher (40 lbs). He died on impact.
He died because the foam extinguisher the marshall carried, it flew to Tom's face and killed him. Think: High speed, and the foam extinguisher comes to head...sad.
The marshall was carrying a fire extinguisher which struck him on the head.. killing him instantly the car was travelling at such a speed that the extinguisher was sent out of the track.
Im a racedriver and i feel safer knowing that there are safety marshalls ready to go at a moments notice. They risk theyr life too! in the states, all the scca marshalls which also work the pro races are ALL trained volunteers and my hat goes off to every one of them around the world.
A very sad freak accident, & a very wasrteful loss of life...have seen an uncensored version, & it is horrible...van buuren was so badly mangled he was identified by elimination; Ptyce's death was really frakish, the helmet got caught in the flying extiguiser & the strap broke his neck...talk abt really bad luck...
Very sad and tragic end for two young men. No disrespect, but being that Zorzi was clear of the fire , letting the car burn until the track was clear would have been much less of a loss than the lives of two innocent men. It is understanable though, for emotions to run high in a time of crisis. Thanks for sharing this historic and heartbreaking moment in F1. Godspeed, Tom and Jensen .
r.i.p. v+p.. motorsports exists because of you guys..people think you are a nuisance sometimes,.. but to us,the true motoring community, your`e essential for the racers safety.. god bless,RIP.. love to you both guys x x
So sad and tragic, I believe that could have been prevented but in 1977, standards was unsafe and haphazard at best. BTW Great work uploading this, GWT, I also research this field of study. I hope you do one for Scott Kalita and Fireball Roberts
The caption forgets to mention what killed Pryce. Vuuren carried a heavy fire extinquisher. When Pryce stuck Vuuren, he summersaulted, striking Price in the helmet with the extinquisher, destroying Prices helmet and caving in his skull.
It was a freak accident that only took nanoseconds to finish. Sad indeed.
I've looked at this accident in some other videos and I think this one belongs to one of the worst accidents ever, right after the Le Mans accident in 1955, and I also think this is the best racing tribute/tragedy videos i've ever seen
Yeah, that one if also a horrible crash but I think it's hard to compare which one is the devestaded one, Tom Pryce's or Gordon Smiley's, but I think Tom Pryce's crash is a little more devestaded then Gordon Smiley's, but that's only my opinion
Well, I don't think you can really compare the two. Gordon Smiley was the only one on track when he crashed and Tom Pryce was 21 laps into a race when the unthinkable happened. Janson Van Vuuren was a 19 year old who was only doing what he thought he should, Tom Pryce was a racer who just didn't see him in time. This was a nightmare I don't think anybody ever thought would happen, sadly it did. God bless'em both and everyone that's lost their lives to motorsports.
yeah you have a point, and it's very sad that he died so young Van Vuuren and you're right Pryce had hard to see, I discovered later today that it was actually Van Vuuren who flew, first I thought it was a piece from Pryce's car when he crashed to the barrier and when I discovered it was actually Van Vuuren who flew I was in chock for a pretty long time, R.I.P Janson Van Vuuren and Tom Pryce you will never be forgotten
@WawixWorld He struck the teenage marshal at approximately 270 km/h (170 mph). Van Vuuren was thrown into the air and landed yards in front of Zorzi and Bill. He died upon impact, his body being literally torn in half, with Pryce's car.
When I saw the uncensored footage for the first time(before I saw this one, which is a great memorial!) I was so shocked I nearly cried.
People talking about they should have done this or that is easy in hindsight, safety was basicly a joke back then.
goodwill. i just found out something. if you switched Eric Martin's music with Tom Pryce's music, they sound great! (don't ask how i did it i have my own special way =] ) its amazing.
There was no car to pit radio back then. The only connection to a drivers helmet was an oxygen tube. If you watch Niki Lauda celebrate on the podium it's only because he hadn't a clue how bad the accident was. He was only told the seriousness of it while he was up there!
Hey, I do not make these kind of comments that often, but I believe this video is the single greatest video ever made involving the Pryce/Van Vuuren Tragedy. I can tell this was made with much respect. Actually I think I can take it a little farther and call this one of the best racing tribute/tragedy videos I have ever seen.
i was about to say that. anyway did i request this video? or was it Helmuth Koinigg =S anyway im happy your doing your best in these videos. i wish i could meet you In real life. id pay you millions for your work. =)
I think i may have requested Bill Vukovich on RM, I posted a link on RM a long time ago to a site that has alot of stuff related to Vukovich's life and his crash.
There were marshal's on that side of the track but not near Zorzi's car. The two on pit wall - Jansen Van Vuuren and Bill were inexperienced and made the fatal mistake of crossing without orders. A lot of harsh comments have been made about Van Vuuren but you gotta remember he was only 19 years old and doing what he thought he should. Thankfully F1 has learned from this terrible accident and it has never been repeated.
The accident which killed Pryce and Van Vuuren is without a doubt one of the most gruesome accidents in motorsports.
It really begs the question why there weren't marshalls on the opposite side of the track or why these two decided they should go on the track? At the same time it's good to remember that F1 regulations today have changed to prevent such horrible accidents.

When Pryce struck Van Vuuren, the extinguisher he was carrying pulled Pryce's helmet UP, also off, partially decapitating Pryce. The driver that Pryce hit while deceased was Jacques Laffite.

You can believe me,you don't really want to see how this poor marshal get split by pryce's car.
Its really nasty what happened at this race.
I hope Pryce an Van Vuuren rest in peace.

PS...While I have seen Van Vurren's scene before, kudos to goodwilltubing for bluring him out for those who don't know what happened.

Both died? And only coz the marshall went on wrong time? SHIT
TheNoizeController 1 year ago

And what is that crumpled mass of rags over there?
kolbpilot 1 year ago
@kolbpilot They were probably totally shocked. Look how quickly it all happens on the film and how unclear it is, even when you've been told what's unfolding before your eyes. They were (understandably) focussing on the possibility of the car exploding, and let's face it, if anybody was in Zorzi's potentially fatal position when the flames backed up in a car full of fuel, they're heart would be thumping too. Very, very sad.

His name was Frederick Jansen - Van Vuuren (1958—March 5, 1977).
telescopereplicator 1 year ago
Theres 'better' footage of the incident if you know what I mean. To give an idea of how hard the hit was on Pryces helmet according to eyewitnesses the fire extinguisher ended up in the car park after flying over the grandstand,
The marshalls full name was Frederik Jansen Van Vuuren btw

@LB1973
Thanks for the info, LB1973. Indeed there is better footage, especially the third angle, which only last seconds (will we ever see more from this angle?), but I wanted to only show the main parts of the crash footage. So or so, it is an horrific accident and it should never had happened.
goodwilltubing 1 year ago 3
@goodwilltubing actually, the clip was supposed to be longer and it showed clearly that the fire extinguisher hit pryce's head and the helmet was almost off. unfortunately, someone flagged the clip as "shocking and disgusting' and that part of the clip was taken off. So some actual footage of pryce in front still remains a mystery.

adrenf 2 years ago
@adrenf ---- pryce was driving down the track when a track/race marshall was crossing in front of him carrying a 40lb fire extinguisher the impact sent the marshall flying thru the air killing him instantly the extinguisher struck Pryce in the head with such force it killed him, his car kept going at full speed til the next corner where he hit it but was already dead by then
ltscarecrow 2 years ago 2

Sad indeed.

Also one of the most horrific must be Gordon Smiley's crash while qualifying for the Indy 500 in '82.
twolaneblacktop71 2 years ago
Yeah, that one if also a horrible crash but I think it's hard to compare which one is the devestaded one, Tom Pryce's or Gordon Smiley's, but I think Tom Pryce's crash is a little more devestaded then Gordon Smiley's, but that's only my opinion
Stup1dSw3d1shB4D4ss 2 years ago
Well, I don't think you can really compare the two. Gordon Smiley was the only one on track when he crashed and Tom Pryce was 21 laps into a race when the unthinkable happened. Janson Van Vuuren was a 19 year old who was only doing what he thought he should, Tom Pryce was a racer who just didn't see him in time. This was a nightmare I don't think anybody ever thought would happen, sadly it did. God bless'em both and everyone that's lost their lives to motorsports.
twolaneblacktop71 2 years ago
yeah you have a point, and it's very sad that he died so young Van Vuuren and you're right Pryce had hard to see, I discovered later today that it was actually Van Vuuren who flew, first I thought it was a piece from Pryce's car when he crashed to the barrier and when I discovered it was actually Van Vuuren who flew I was in chock for a pretty long time, R.I.P Janson Van Vuuren and Tom Pryce you will never be forgotten
Stup1dSw3d1shB4D4ss 2 years ago
Yeah me too. Its quite shocking to see, to say the least. I was born 2 mths after this, which is why I came across this vid.
Just wondring, did Van Vuuren jump over the wall afterwards, meaning, was he conscious enough to do so??
And why did the Zorzi and other marshall just stand around still??
Im watching this 33 yrs after, and its shocking - let alone being 3 metres away.
WawixWorld 2 years ago
@WawixWorld
To the first question:
No, it wasn't Van Vuuren, he was killed on impact.
Must have been someone else. I think it is the other marshal jumping over the fence later on.
To the second question:
They were standing still, cause Van Vuuren was definitiely dead.
RIP Pryce and Van Vuuren
goodwilltubing 2 years ago
@WawixWorld He struck the teenage marshal at approximately 270 km/h (170 mph). Van Vuuren was thrown into the air and landed yards in front of Zorzi and Bill. He died upon impact, his body being literally torn in half, with Pryce's car.
When I saw the uncensored footage for the first time(before I saw this one, which is a great memorial!) I was so shocked I nearly cried.
People talking about they should have done this or that is easy in hindsight, safety was basicly a joke back then.

There was no car to pit radio back then. The only connection to a drivers helmet was an oxygen tube. If you watch Niki Lauda celebrate on the podium it's only because he hadn't a clue how bad the accident was. He was only told the seriousness of it while he was up there!
twolaneblacktop71 2 years ago
Just one little correction, you write that Zorzi had trouble disconnecting the oxygen pipe, but it was actually the intercom cord.
Other then that, it's great to see that there are people like you out there, that treat these people with the respect they deserve...

Thankfully F1 has learned from this terrible accident and it has never been repeated.
twolaneblacktop71 2 years ago
The accident which killed Pryce and Van Vuuren is without a doubt one of the most gruesome accidents in motorsports.
It really begs the question why there weren't marshalls on the opposite side of the track or why these two decided they should go on the track? At the same time it's good to remember that F1 regulations today have changed to prevent such horrible accidents.
Excellent video.

THX HandeToon!
This accident showed up the security issues F1 had.
I think it was pure idiotism to run over a race track when there are cras coming.
You see there was no need to rush.
It would have been more intelligent to wait and run over the track on a place where you can see oncoming cars.
Nevertheless
RIP Pryce & Vuuren
