I love love this song. Really wish their record producers would of let them sing these types of songs. This is really what they wanted to do. I saw an interview with them once and they said that they really wanted a rock career but that the people that they had to deal with with record contracts and so for thought it would hurt their image. So sad.
This song was a bit ahead of its time. When it came out the eldest one (whose name I cannot remember) explained on TOTP that it was anti pollution. I only just realised what horses the song is referring to.
While Merrill usually played the bass he could play the drums as well as several other instruments. Here, it is Alan on the bass. All of the brothers could play a number of instruments.
Interesting that in this clip Merrill is playing drums, because the clips I've seen he's playing bass (assuming that's him singing the prechorus in the other versions too).
WELL CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME WHO IS THAT ON BASS BECAUSE MERRILL USUALLY PLAYS BASS THOUGH HE IS ON DRUMS IN THIS CLIP WHILE JAY IS USUALLY THE DRUMMER ?
I have a feeling the boys could have held their own, had they gone the "harder rock" route..But the record company wanted Donny out front , and really killed any chance of that happening.Crazy Horses and Hold Her Tight, were just as good as any of the other "heavier" tunes out at this time
Yes that is Merrill on drums.. I saw the Osmonds at the Garden, In NYC in 71' - Great show., Believe it or not my Grandmother took me, my brother and my cousin, I think she went deaf after that concert, My mother thought she was crazy for taking us.
wait wait wait....um...why are the girls in the audience like screaming their heads off and why are they being carried out of the show? Could it be they see 5 Elvis's?? could it be mass hysteria??? anyone????
I love this song...it's amazing how the girls used to cry over performers in those days. I don't think too many celebrities today have that kind of reaction.
This was really their last collective 'hurrah'. This particular production is really a mess compared to the studio version. (The studio version could have been reproduced in concert...no voice doublings or anything). If they'd kept their focus as a pop act rather than try to compete with (as others here suggested) hard rock acts, they might have lasted longer.
I just spotted my friend Heather at 1:39 in a red top, lol, I was too young to go in 1973, my first Osmond concert was in 1975 at Earls Court. I was mesmerized.
Alongside there great songs and performances, It's amazing that all these guys were blood brothers and so multi-talented.. That's kind of a rare thing. They , alongside the Jackson5 were just a really great group of performers.
Do you think these girls were just a little bit excited lol , my mum said her parents would never let her go cause they were afraid of what might happen to her :) , but damn the osmand brothers were cute and they could move ;)
Everybody thinks the Osmonds were so bubblegummy, but they could get down and rock with the best of them when they wanted to. And they didn't have to be strung out drug addicts or alcoholics to do it. (Crazy Horses, Hold Her Tight, Down By The Lazy River, etc.) IMO Merrill had one of the sexiest rock and roll voices of all time. Mm Mm Mm. I am still listening to some of their music 40 years on, and I can't find a thing wrong with it.
I remember the Osmonds playing this tune on the Andy Williams show when I was a child. They looked out of place and wierd tring to perform it. This tune seems like kind of a psychedelic type song that would be performed best by a band other than the Osmonds, which in my mind were more of a bubblegum pop group..
@macksterful you are right, the songs enough to send you crazy anyway and with all that hysteria, what an atmoshere it must of been.......omg absolutey crazYYYYY lol
When I think of all the mania and the fans going wild in the audience (fainting, etc.), it makes me realize that we drove our parents crazy at these concerts of The Osmonds. When they came to Canada (where I'm from), my Mother sat beside me and I tried so hard to stay calm as I watched them perform onstage.
I'm sure our own Mothers went crazy and fainted when The Beatles were doing this ten years earlier! LOL. What comes around goes around. Love this song, by the way!
@PaulieDi I remember being second row from the front, right in front of Donny screaming my head off and feeling his sweat hit me in the face and almost going berserk - ah yes the good old days. We weren't as crazy as the UK fans but we let them know we loved them too lol.
@pattyken1 oh yes we WERE!... I was one of the "crazy noisey UK fans" loved every second of my Osmond-mania days..... oh wait, I'm still nutty about these guys! LOL x
@pattyken1 going to Vegas to see Donny & Marie in June and going to Wembley to Wayne, Merrill ,Jay & Jimmy in July..... all within a week......what a week woo hoo !
@glcfordco Omg what a week your gonna have,Is the wembley show your going to see "the once in a lifetime tour" if so Im going to that, with a bunch of BCR fans.
@pattyken1 yes it is ! I'm really looking forward to it aswell. I've got a meet & greet tkt with D&M (eeek) - finally meeting Donny THEN on to Wembley... I wont want to come back to earth will I !!
Yes and now I've had the pleasure of witnessing both my daughters scream over thier bands.... the eldest for Take That and the younger one for McFly.... as you say what goes around comes around LOL currently watching my niece swoon for Joe Jonas !
I get the distinct impression The Osmonds liked performing this even more than we liked hearing it. And look at we British girls going wild - not very stiff upper lip!
this just proved that the Osmonds can not only kick ass but they can also ROCK and get the girls all at the same time they are still great after all these years
Led Zeppelin rented the same PA that the Osmonds did . . . I played in the Osmonds band at this show (and others on this tour) and saw (and heard) 2 of the Zeppelin shows that were at the same venue as guest of the sound company . . . they were good shows, too . . .
I said it before and I'll say it again. Ken Awesome! Merrill on drums as well! I seriously underestimated the talent of these guys back in the early 70's. But forgive me, I am male and was only 12 in 1972 and had to compete against Donny and his brothers, David, Michael, Cat etc - I didn't stand a chance!
Oh Merrillyn....I still get 'butterflies' watching this clip. I can't get over how it brings it all back - you're just so instantly THERE! I feel like screaming all over again LOL
the Osmonds were my first concert at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1972. This is the best live footage I have seen that sums it all up. I was 7 and got really lucky, one of my sister's friends couldn't make it to the show so I got to tag along! I remember flashbulbs, electric guitars, white fringe and girls screaming. Needless to say, it had quite an effect on me as I am a musician, recording studio owner and produce records for a living!
My Mum wouldn't let me go and see the Osmonds at this time as I was only 10 and it was too dangerous!! I finally saw them in 1979 for the first (and not the last!) time. I used to love watching coverage on TV of all the early concerts and Osmania - awesome days! Thanx Gail for sending me this clip and to Lyn for posting it.
Thats exactly what I meant. This clip brings it all back, doesn't it? I remember, during the one I went to I didn't know at one point what I doing!! I do remember my sister forcing me to stand up willing me not to faint!! I was, quite literally, beside myself with pure utter joy!!
Not my concert either but thats how it was here in Australia too (smaller scale though) all the screaming, crying and the fainting, no one really listening etc lol.
Your making perfect sense cause I felt it too when I first watched this video it was like being in a time warp.
This has to be my FAVORITE ALL TIME clip of this song! I mean, man 'o man! This is so RAW! And everyone's so into this: The Osmonds, their fans, even the guys who have to help carry the poor fainting girls away! I mean, the whole thing is so full tilt that there's smoke, sound interference from the mikes and you can hear this CRAZY echo effect from The Osmond's voices. I'm just like, keep this thing going and GOING! And Jay running across the stage is well, just PRICELESS! Thanks for the post!!!
Jay is awesome! All the time growing up, I never knew who was who....well everyone knew who Donny, Marie and Jimmy were. Who dated Karen Carpenter? Was it Alan?
I watched a 6 part video of the Osmonds on tour in the UK in 1973 a few days ago - it was awesome!! but I can't find it anymore - anyone have any idea where to look?
TERRIFIC!!! Merrill standing in at the drums, now that's a rare sight you don't see very often, and he can surely kick up quite a beat as good as Jay's, in fact second to none! Merrill, like the rest of his brothers, is truly multi-talented.
Also. When I first saw this clip on Donny & Marie talk show I was like, where's Merrill. They were at the end of the clips and they didn't show Merrill.

OMG. I didn't know the girls fainted with the Osmonds.
OMG, Lyn. You have this video of Crazy Horses. I saw the whole thing a few months ago, but it was pulled. Its good to see it again. Also I remembered seeing a clip of this on the Donny and Marie show back in 1999 when the brothers were a guest. IT was interesting.
I'm with Osbird. I wasn't even born yet. I wasn't born until 1980. So I would do anything to see them in concert back then.
Well I'm hopping on 'osbird's' time machine to go back and make Merrill mine though I'll have to share him with her - so you might as well join us heheheheh.
Gawd we're crazy but hey what the heck they say that dreams are free. LOL
I'm with you 'osbird' when can be start WOW a 70's Osmond concert how AWESOME would that be - as our babe Merrill says 'an incredible moment in time'. Awe I wish.
Very very under ratedbest song they ever done

Is Alan playing bass? I can't tell.
