@FelicityMoep because if voldemort doesn't grow up to be evil, there is no reason for anyone to time travel and kill him. it would only work if harry took voldemort's place in the past and did all the things necessary to create his journey through time. this would mean after harry finished killing the original voldemort, the harry in his place in the future could stop being voldemort and start being harry again. to everyone else, it would just seem as if harry gained a few decades of age.

@FelicityMoep the reason you would go to the past to kill voldemort is because everyone knows he is evil, he attacked you at birth, and continues to attack you. if he were killed in the past, you would grow up not knowing he existed, not knowing he was evil, and not being attacked by him. if you don't even know he exists, and he isn't after you, there is no reason to time travel and murder a baby you have never heard of. its pretty simple, are you sure you don't see what im talking about?
