According to the BBC documentary "the Maharajas Motor Car" In the 1920's a Rolls Royce internal company memo said in response to customers wanting faster cars:

"The serpent of speed and power has entered this company and is likely to poison its existence" It went on to say that any employees promoting faster cars would be sacked.
