Hi all, I'm trying to start a new video game blog, focusing on the classics. First few posts on Mega Man. I'd love for anyone to come check it out! Thanks!
Some of the explanations here are pretty complicated. Here's a better one.
Super Mario Bros. 2 came out in Japan in 1986. It was the same as the first SMB but with different levels. It never was released outside of Japan. Then in 1987 Nintendo EAD (miyamoto's development team) created Doki Doki Panic and it was was released in Japan only because it was part of a promotion for a Japanese TV station. Now, it's 1988, and Super Mario Bros. 3 is soon to be release in Japan.
@chafenhimer But America and Europe still don't have a Mario 2. So to solve this problem, Miyamoto's team took Doki Doki Panic (which already had references to Mario games in it) and changed the four main characters, which were mascots for the Japanese TV promotion, and thus were owned by the TV station and not Nintendo. The characters were changed to Mario characters, but the enemies stayed the same as they were original creations by Nintendo.
@chafenhimer They also made some minor improvements in graphics and sound. Since the original Mario 2 was never released internationally, they decided to make a new one based on Doki Doki Panic. And so in October 1988, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros 3 both came out for the first time. Except one was in America, and one was in Japan... the American SMB3 wouldn't come out for about a year later.
@chafenhimer@chafenhimer Fast forward to the early '90s, and Nintnedo is releasing their old Famicom Disk System games as normal cartridges. Since the disk system never was released outside Japan, many early FDS games were converted to cartridges for an international release, such as Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania.
@chafenhimer Doki Doki Panic was also one of these games, except it was never released in America. And they couldn't release Doki Doki Panic on cartridge in Japan because they didn't have the rights to use to use the mascots from the Japanese TV promotion. So, they just took the American SMB2 game that they made, changed the title to "Super Mario USA", and released it in Japan in 1992. From that point on, the American SMB2 was in the official Mario canon.
Do you know why its called that, bcuz Japan released a game in 1987 called "Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic". And the U.S. took that game and just added the mario charecters and left the bad guys as they were. They called it Super Mario 2. Later in Japan they took the U.S Conversion and named it Super Mario USA. Just a little Info for you. Cool
wow that was actually very informative... always wondered why we never saw some of these baddies in any other SMB game.. lol they were just too random to be "SMB" baddies... eh makes sense now haha
@jhuL3z they were never actually SMB baddies. they were actually baddies ikn a game called Doki Doki Panic. This game was just a comlpletely a knock off of it if you compare the two.
@Soopahperry111 Technically, it's not even a knock off. A knock off implies it was a copy. SMB2 is the actual game "Doki Doki Panic" just with mario characters inserted into it.
This game is Doki Doki Panic in Japan. Super Mario Brothers The Lost Levels is SMB2 in Japan. This game is SMB2 in USA. Lost Levels is not in USA. There is no SMB2 in USA because we did not accept the game due to the difficulty. That is why we call it the Lost Levels. But if there was a SMB2 in Japan, there has to be one here. This game was the closest USA could find in gameplay to Super Mario Brothers. They put in new sprites for USA.
Yes, this was the Japanese title of the USA/European version of "Super Mario Bros. 2" because in Japan the title "Super Mario Bros. 2" was already in use for the version of the game we would get as "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels."
No. As ClassicTVMan81 stated, USA and Europe got the game, but it was titled "Super Mario Bros. 2". I'm pretty sure the only difference between the two is titles.
The real Mario 2 was out in Japan as SMB2 intended for those that mastered SMB1, but Nintendo USA decided it was too difficult for the Western audience and instead remade "Dream Factory - Doki Doki Panic" by wallpapering it with Mario. SMB2 did eventually get released as The Lost Levels. Europe suffered this likewise as the USA.
@cali727 yeah i hated this game with a passion, it was the US's cheap way out of making/developing a follow up to the original Mario Brothers on NES. gameplay in this game is nothing like any of the other Mario gameplay.....
@Tampabruh maybe...but we can also say it was a different gameplay...more characters to choose from, different ennemies...cool music....this is the good thing about the MArio serie on the NES....all 3 of them were different from each others, therefore we can have more fun and no situation in which you have the second one so the first one is good for trash or anything like that
I didn't hate it... But it just felt like a lie the entire time... I mean wtf is with the Fing turnips?! Then Later I find out it's techniqually not even the real Mario 2 and Imall pissed, because that means Birdo shold have never existed, yet the egg shooting transvestite is still here...
@JigglyPuff569 Yeah I beat that when I was 5. This Mario game gave me the most trouble back in the day but I could get to level 3 even at age 5 I'd just get owned by Mouser.
@JigglyPuff569 His behavior makes me think it must be his first time playing it. He tried to throw the POW and the potion at the enemies, he wandered around once he reached the right end of the first part of the level instead of going straight for the door, he didn't inmediately try to grab the eggs from the boss just avoiding them instead and he tried to jump on top the boss to see if that would hurt him. Then again, he knew he could pull stuff from the ground at the beginning...
luigi was fallllllllllllllllllllllllllllling! i wish i had that game but im happy of what i got. im just wondering what tipe of lectronic dose it need?(play stashin nintendo ds gamecube) anything.
well it is only really been available as this title in Japan, so as not to confuse with the REAL super mario bros 2 for Japan. The idea of calling it super mario USA was because it was the North American's idea of 'eazing' video game experience by adopting another game and changing it to a mario title: INTO THIS!!!
this is the USA version of doki doki panic

@chafenhimer That's why there are references to SMB2 in many Mario games after 1992, with characters like Shy Guy and Birdo appearing.

@Racecars721
Actually, to be more precise:
This game is Doki Doki Panic in Japan. Super Mario Brothers The Lost Levels is SMB2 in Japan. This game is SMB2 in USA. Lost Levels is not in USA. There is no SMB2 in USA because we did not accept the game due to the difficulty. That is why we call it the Lost Levels. But if there was a SMB2 in Japan, there has to be one here.
