This guy wrote a book about this incident...he ended up having both of his legs amputated at the hip.

The book is called "A Test of Will: One man's extradordinary story of survival"...available at Amazon for 2.78.
It's a good book. He says he asked the doctors to wait to see if his legs "came back to life"...and they told him he would be dead the next day if the legs didn't come off.
