With all due respect to Ms.Berganza, who was wonderful and is still an active teacher, she was singing Carmen 30 years ago. Ms.Garanca is well on her way to becoming the definitive Carmen for THIS time.

I saw her in the new Met Carmen 1-5-10 and she out-sang everybody which included Frittoli, Alagna and Kwiecien. Her mezzo is sizeable and filled that big auditorium easily. She's also a very convincing actor and of course a real beauty. I noticed she put on a little weight compared to her CD photos and YT clips, and it worked as the more earthy Carmen that the new production called for. She was terrific and got great reviews.

voce bella e donna bellissima, ma se devo essere sincero non convince pienamente...innanzitutto i fiati che spezzano continuamente le frasi e le parole (vite vite, per esempio) e poi manca di sensualità e di sfrontatezza ...la habanera (ancorchè non di Bizet) deve mostrare l'uno e l'altro dei due caratteri dominanti di Carmen...però bisogna sentire tutto il resto...e poi la materia c'è sicuramente

I don't think Elina is a type of mezzo for Carmen, her caracter is much to cold....Carmen has to be wild and hot....Elina is anything else but that...

Sometimes i thing she ist not mezzo at all....she sounds more soprano like!!!

you're right but netrebko is not a lyrical dramatic but "just" a lyric soprano..

maybe she performs as a dramatic but truly her tonality in the lower register is her most appealing. My opinion...Netrebko was originally a mezzo and trained soprano for better and bigger roles. Thats what my ears tell me.
