There was two strands of cartoons coming out of the late eighties. The unironic superhero cartoon that was made primarily to impress kids and sell toys like Thundercats, He-Man and Dinosaucers and there was also the wackier comedy cartoon trend that came from the New Adventures of Mighty Mouse like Tiny Toons, Bobby's World and Taz-Mania. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brilliantly combined these two strands and that's why it was so huge and still awesome today.

2003 series was FAR better show, because the Turtles are more fleshed out characters, Shredder was an actually threat and most importantly the show was much closer and more faithful to the ORIGINAL comic books than this show ever was.
