Very good selection with Chrono Cross. I also did an RPG top 10 openings and Chrono Cross won my vote for the best one. The first time I ever saw it, it took my breath away. It wasn't only the graphics but the music is just gorgeous. Yasunori Mitsuda is probably the best in the business when it comes to video game music.
I don't think it's a coincidence I agree with you with this choice. It's truly the best opening theme in any RPG. Good list overall, and it's your opinion in the end, but I really expected Liberi Fatali to be on the list.
Gosh this brings back memories. It was so good then. I can't really get into a game anymore. I thinks it's because I grew up. But I really want to re-live these days with epic games. That's just it. They're aren't really anymore epic games. It's not fun anymore. I really loved this game. *Sigh* Don't know anymore. Love the music. Maybe I'll go get Xenoblade.
Love your taste in music and games. This my personal absolute favorite RPG, for a variety of reasons. If you think the OP's good, listen to the ED (good end) Radical Dreamers. Guitar melody and vocals make it both minimalistic and sublime.
@dwagothegod this is ps1 homie ya know the system where most of the greatest rpgs r played on lol this is including some old ones for SNES brought to PS1 i would strongly recommend all of the following for PS1 RPGs: Suikoden 1 & 2, FF 7 8 tactics, Xenogears, Star Ocean 2, Valkyrie Profile, Grandia, Wild Arms 2, and Chrono Trigger my highest recommendation is for Suikoden 2 IF U CAN FIND IT!!!.
I played this game a long time ago when I was a kid, and didn't like it that much, but after playing it ago about a month ago, I actually like it more than Chrono Trigger. I guess it's better to play it at a more mature age to understand the symbolism and themes. But Chrono Trigger still had better characters (seriously, is there anyone more awesome than Frog).
FUCKING COMPLETELY AGREED WITH YOU, this was my first RPG, i will never forget how this whole game touched me, so deeply, i still have some signs of the depression this game gave me, i played it when i was 14, and i'm 17 now... AND I STILL PLAY IT, i own the original cd!

@mrcthemanha Lol...I didn't know people still played Playstation RPGs, even a few years ago. So you actually played this in the era of the PS3? impressive. I never played Chrono Trigger until 2004 on an emulator so I guess I ain't so different. The only one I'm dissapointed isn't in here- Grandia III, In The Sky by Miz. I heard that for the first time, and saw the video, I knew that I had an awesome game. It was one of the first RPG's I ever finished, too that had more than 60 hours to it... Which reminds me, I still gotta finish Star Ocean: TTEOT.
I can see why you wouldn't like Chrono Cross in that respect then, if you've played CT you don't start CC expecting a philosophical game... you gotta kinda leave yourself open to it. If you ever wish it, start the game in that mindset and it'll come to you then... it's easy to grasp so long as you keep that in mind.
one of the best songs and PRG i played...... Playstation 1 really had great RPG games........i played this when i was 12.....i really love the story and the songs is just great.....i think i will play this again..
yea i need to pick it back up i stopped playing when i found out it wasnt a really straight forward game that you had options i stopped when i had the options of either to let kid come with me or the other chick and the dog
If you like this then I highly recommend looking up Megadriver's rendition... they also have a lot of other great music, from Chrono Trigger and otherwise. ^_^
I love yasunori mistuda's use of trills. he does them in every single good song and they always make the main part of the song that sounds good. too bad you can't do it with piano cause i can't play violin :(
Alright you sir have an excellent list. BUT, i want you to look this up "Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter Opening" i with all honesty cannot believe you didn't add this opening, let me know what you think. Good list either way.
The Game is good stand alone but to link it to Chrono Trigger are some pretty big shoes to fill and while I enjoyed the game and the story it didn't feel like Chrono Triggers Sequel, it felt like it's Cousin.
I think I would have had Into the Wilderness at #1. I still love that game. Didn't like the sequals, but the original was classic. FFVIII didn't make this list, thats kind of odd.
If there were a JRPG that require a Ph.D for the understanding, I think, Chrono Cross would won over some touch of existentialists like Xenogears, etc just for the sake of its hella confusing pacing and storyline, just remember how many times you checked every places (and items) just because the game didn't give you a little bit less vague clues...xD
What perceived like the command of the Dragon Gods turned out to be another continuation of the 65.000.000 years-stalled war. lololol
Radical Dreamers was a canonical successor for Chrono Trigger, UNTIL they decided to re-made it into a full game called Chrono Cross and declare Cross the canonical one.
Great top list from a really knowledgeable person! I really love Chrono series to the death, really.
Also, it's a shame about Lunar, they got a bad start with Sega CD, if only they had come with just PSX...
You should really listen to the opening of Grandia. I agree with most of your list, but not having Grandia's opening theme somewhere in this list is unfathomable unless you've never heard it.
Oh my... I've just watched this list of yours and I liked it so much. In fact, there were some that didn't appeal me. For sure this is your own ranking but I was very, very happy seeing the first, second and third places. Without a shadow of doubt, these pieces are awesome. I would only put Genesis Beyond the Beginning closer to that three. Congratulations for you and your ears. lol
I believe chrono cross to be a true sequel to chrono trigger. Hell it reveals what happened to schala after she got sucked by Lavos! It said what was of Lucca and Robo. And it even gave chrono the ability to speak!
Chrono cross was simply a stunning game experience to me.
When you put it that way, I DO feel like I missed out for not enjoying the game more. I remember the game feeling pretty tragically sad towards the end, but I don't remember the ending itself much. It's been a long time since I played it, and I wouldn't mind giving it another shot, but I have problems tolerating the parts I don't like... Kind of like my relationship with Xenogears.
Give it another shot if you have a copy. I can tell you that the best part of CC was likely its battle system which was rather fresh, innovative, and very well-constructed. You do have a point about many aspects of the story being a little too vague (I really didn't know Lynx was Serge's long lost father transformed by FATE into Serge's worst fear until very recently, honestly where was that in the dialogue did I miss something!?) but the actual game mechanics are amazing. Masterpiece overall!
I did play CC through to the end, and I had no doubts that it was a true sequel. What little there was that tied it together was depressing and a bit sketchy. I have no problems with the depressing part, but I ended up reading a rather long article that discussed the plot intricacies and CT ties. It wasn't so much that I "wasn't paying attention" as it was that it was interested parties constructing theories and filling in plot holes.
The story was simply not told in a matter that satisfied most of the audience, so they had to fill in many, MANY blanks by themselves. Now, reading this article was interesting, but it should not have been nessessary. Ideally, the story would stand on its own. Most people will not have the patience to try to figure out exactly what's going on in the messily constructed plot of CC.
Setting aside the plot for now, I also did not like any of the characters as a whole. The characters that were cute or amusing did not have any plot development, and those that DID have plot development, I felt no attachement or interest towards. CC did not, in my opinion, fully realize ANY of the 100 or so characters that joined you. The accents that most characters had only served to annoy me.
Of course, another obvious point of fact, is that exploring two very similar dimensions is not as interestering or entertaining as traveling through time. CC had a lot of things going for it, but it failed to really draw the audience into it's world. The bottom line is that I did not have fun playing CC. It didn't work for me. Kickass music and FMVs though! No question there.
Wow, a lot of people should die then. What exactly was great about the Chrono Cross story? Not counting stuff that was great in Chrono Trigger but stuff that is unique to Chrono Cross. Convince me. I'm open to your opinion.
Excellent choice! I would have picked this as my #1 of all time as well. :)
The story is pretty convoluted, but if you pay attention and spend some time to piece things together it's actually quite incredible. :) Did you finish the game, by any chance?
well. this game makes more sense with the new Chrono Trigger release. you see the time devourer at the end of the game and it ties more the story of magus/schala/lavos/dimensions explained in part on CC, good choice , this intro is truly amazing
I could rant on and on about how terrible this game is, but I just LOVE this intro, as well as most of the music in this game. It's a masterpeice. It's kind of like FF8. Great music, graphics and awesome FMVs that keep you slogging through a terrible game to see more. In fact, I'm a bit surprised not to see the FF8 intro in this list. That was epic as hell. And yet, another greatly dissapointing game.
Oh man, great choice of Number 1. this theme is one of the best opening songs for a game period. It is musically genius, inspires, and sets the mood for playing the game. In fact, I think the entire soundtrack of this game is spectacular. Yasunori Mitsuda's best soundtrack.
Excellent choice for #1. I couldn't agree more. I remember seeing this vid as a trailer years ago when I first came out (I think I was like 11?) and the music and opening video made me *HAVE* to own this game.
I definitely loved CT more, but CC all in all wasn't such a bad game. No amount of awesomeness could have lived up to what the opening song/video had me psyched for though.
It remains to this day one of my favorite openings of all time.
There could not possibly be any other number one. I have a bias towards the FF series' music because I find most of Uematsu's work incredible, but I think a few of them should have hit your list. Final Fantasy VI's opening comes to mind first.
I posted on one of your other lists as well and mentioned songs that should have been on the list. I don't mean to be an ass by it, I just want to offer constructive criticism and hopefully mention a song you had forgotten or games that you havn't played
It's not a problem and I understand. I just have some different tastes and don't think some songs are as good as others suggest personally. It's all opinion. :)
Agreed, the Violin was soul of this song. The game made sense to me, but it was just scattered. It was like putting a big-piece jigsaw puzzle together blindfolded... you could do it, but it was going to take some time.
I did a review on this album on my site, as well as Chrono Trigger's ost and a short spot on Yasunori Mitsuda.
Check it out when you get a chance, you might find it interesting... or totally out there :)
the chrono series is epic. and i hate how people didnt play this game because they heard it wasn't good. i mean CC, nor do I think any RPG will ever live up to CT, but CC is still in my opinon one of my top 5 rpgs of all time.
Zapper, that was your best list yet. Keep up the good work. Chrono Cross' music seems great, too bad you don't feel the same about the story. I want this game after watching this, though. :)
This song makes me feel like everythings going to be ok no matter how bad things get

I know they're related games (obviously), but in in terms of the opening themes, the connection is at 1:37-1:44 and 1:54-2:01 (same melody).
go to /watch?v=NotILKfI-5o and compare with 1:42-1:53 there.
I love noticing stuff like this, even tho it's kinda obvious.

We should have known what would Square do with that.

:) Did you finish the game, by any chance?

well. this game makes more sense with the new Chrono Trigger release. you see the time devourer at the end of the game and it ties more the story of magus/schala/lavos/dimensions explained in part on CC, good choice , this intro is truly amazing

this is my favorite intro theme in video gaming history.

Lol I know what you mean. The game itself let me down, but at least the opening got me thrilled.

Gotta admit, besides the game being a bit disappointing, the music was absolutely ace.
Great choice. I personally like the flute (flute?) in the beginning. Sets such the mood before it kicks up the pace.

I know what you mean. It's still good stuff.

Ah, thank you.
Couldn't figure it out. I'm not much of a music man.

Check it out when you get a chance, you might find it interesting... or totally out there :)

definately agree with your number one
the chrono series is epic. and i hate how people didnt play this game because they heard it wasn't good. i mean CC, nor do I think any RPG will ever live up to CT, but CC is still in my opinon one of my top 5 rpgs of all time.

Well I did play it at least and even beaten it. It just did not click with me, but that's my opinion. It's definitely love it or hate it.

Zapper, that was your best list yet. Keep up the good work. Chrono Cross' music seems great, too bad you don't feel the same about the story. I want this game after watching this, though. :)

Thanks and it's worth trying at least once. It's pretty much love it or hate it in terms of story. Your opinion can greatly differ from mine.
