Agnosticism- that humans are simply incapable of understanding what God is and how he exists- is nonsense. The bible- taken to be the very word of God- explains very clearly that God is an omnipotent, man-like being (created man in his own image). Aside from the obvious contradiction of terms there, it's quite obvious that nothing in the universe is infinite. If there was, it wouldn't be a matter of faith.

I became an Atheist because of the bible, the way it was written, when it was written, and the people who wrote it. If one reads any history, the church was riddled with 'sinners', and yet today people choose to totally disregard that.
Christians have always believed that everyone except for Jesus is a sinner. No one can achieve perfection. I'm curious as to what problems you have with the Bible and the people who wrote it. I don't understand why there is so much hatred towards this book when it is ultimately teaching Love.

as for why one would want to believe in God - for some reason, i've always sought a metaphysical meaning to life. just being happy and having fun and even helping people here doesn't satisfy me, if there is no eternal meaning and value to it. so that's why i personally want to believe in God. =)

@Clutchology I understand that you don't like to feel grouped as if athiests are all one person.But you have to understand,we christians keep getting the same answeres.I still havent gotten one good scientific fact that disproves God's exsistance.None of us do.The athiests I have encountered so far,either one,didn't read the bible properly,two. missinterperate the bible,three.wont sacrifice there pride,or they just don't trust him.I have never met an athiest that truly doesn't beleive he exists

I have little interest in 'proving' or 'disproving' sides. My 'disbelief' is not based on a reading of the Bible, science, or pride. It is simply my philosophical outlook on the world. My philosophy has no need of a deity, and I have never been given an adequate reason to include one.
@IamTheoneWhodreams It can be quite dangerous to deny the existence of those who disagree with your opinions. Critique their viewpoints. Challenge them. Disagree with them. And encourage them to do the same to you. But never claim that they do not "truly" oppose your position. You cannot grow that way, as a person or as a thinker. =)

However I have not read any of those books, so I wouldn't know what they say. All I need to read is the bible to get answers. Am I talking to a kid by the way? Just wondering.

@mysterymediacorp God is the only truth. There is no other, explanation for our existance. Scientists will search, until rapture. Then they will cower. I am trying to do my job, and help those who are damned. But they refused to be help. It's like someone lost at sea, who refused to be rescued by the coast gaurd.

I'm an Agnostic on the brim of becoming an Atheist. It's not that big of an issue in my life, I've never really thought about religion until my friends started making a big deal of theirs. The only problem I've run into when it comes to my belief is that people try to convince me I'm wrong. They want me to give arguments. The thing is though, I don't really have any. The reason that god created them was because he thought it would make things simpler for us.But he later realized that it only confused us.When god sent jesus he was meant to bring down the other religions so all the christians could be together as one.But some people didn't want that.Read the bible for yourself,and don't rush through.I hope this helps

I've been a proclaimed atheist since 2nd grade. Around kindergarten i starting thinking "But wait... there can't possibly be a god if there can't be a santa." it just didn't make any sense and over the years, my opinion has grown stronger and I am a very liberal, democratic atheist at age 15 :)

The most famous example I can think of is "Can god create a rock so heavy he cannot lift it?"
If he cannot, then there is a limitation to his power. If he can, then he cannot lift it and that is another limitation. Thus, God cannot be all powerful.

It has been rightly said that the atheist can't find God for the same reason a thief can't find a policeman. I don't believe in theism or any of the holy books. So I suppose I must be an atheist.
But I do believe there could be something out there, something that created us, but whether that creator is good bad or indifferent, or expects to be worshipped,there is no way for us to know. For all we know we could be part of a scientific experiment and our creator could be a scientist.
I don't find this idea any more far fetched than the god of the holy books iidea.
I meant that atheists can have very elaborate spirituality wich are not based on old dogma... Like buddhist believing in reincarnation or believing that universe will become god... Ad libitum... Often these spiritualities are richer because based on tangible reality...

As I am still a college student, when ever I talked about what I believed (Atheism), I was hated by all my classmated save for my very best freinds, they just showed respect.
I have alot of reasons for being an atheist, such as this one:
Whilst I am compleatly open to the idea of religion, and am not an atheist becouse I dont personaly like religion, all the reasons for theism I was given I was able to challenge them, so much so that the person simply didnt use it anymore -ever.
BTW: I am still only 14, but I do know what I am talking about, I was also raised to have God at the back of my head, never went to mass but my adoption mother is very theistic.
I would be a theist if I was given good reason for such an idea, a code of behaviour I have always held for everything.
I would challenge anything and everything, since if somethings true then its truthfullness should shine through so obviously, right?

Clutch, your position is very pragmatic, and I can relate. I was an Atheist until the age of 24. I changed that position while studying Engineering, of all things. The more I learned about the physical universe, the less Atheism made sense to me. Right now it's "hip" to call yourself an Atheist, but If you stay objective, you'll probably reevaluate your current position someday.

I'm usually reevaluating my ideas, about everything. Whenever I learn something new it changes how I think in some way. I don't view it as something that will happen once in the future. It's a gradual, continual process that's been happening for years and will continue to happen long into the future.
If our self awareness is due to our nervous systems, and our nervous systems are due to our genetics, then why do we have identical twins which have different self-awarenesses. What I mean is, why is an identical twin self-aware of his body rather than his brother's? They both have the same genetic makeup.
Didn't get it? think about it. Millions of bodies were born and died non of which I was self aware but BOOM my body was born and I was self aware of it. BUT it was possible for a body which has exactly the same genetic makeup as mine to be born which I wouldn't be self aware off, it was possible that I wouldn't be self-aware of my body, identical twins are proof, but I am, why?
@ItsameAlex If you want to know what caused humans to be self-aware I'd suggest reading up on published, peer-reviewed scientific writings on the subject. Neurology would be your best bet. Neither philosophy, me or the YouTube comment section are going to give you well-founded or respectable answers to that.
It's a complex scientific issue. You need a PhD for that stuff. If you want to be taken seriously, anyway.

Simple, really. Self-awareness most probably involves brain function. My hypothetical twin's brain may be genetically identical, but has no attachment to me whatsoever. The only brain that influences my biology, my body, is my own, so it's the only one I'm going to be self-aware of.
Neither my body nor DNA have a sort of genetic memory that links me to my twin.
The only way what you're arguing holds is if self-awareness is some ethereal thing planted in us. That would be the only way it could get mixed up or 'confused'.
Identical genetic make-up is really a non-issue. Both bodies are still different. They're both individual bodies, even if they're exactly the same.
The only thing that matters is that your body/brain is individual. Which it is. Identical twin or not. It's your brain, not your twin's. So it will only make you aware, and only of yourself.

Clutchology is intelligent and articulate, but also young. He has decades of experiences ahead of him. "Reevaluate" does not mean "arrive at the same conclusions I did." It means to "reconsider ones position in light of changing circumstances." (i.e. life experiences.)

I became an Atheist because of the bible, the way it was written, when it was written, and the people who wrote it. If one reads any history, the church was riddled with 'sinners', and yet today people choose to totally disregard that.

I have little interest in 'proving' or 'disproving' sides. My 'disbelief' is not based on a reading of the Bible, science, or pride. It is simply my philosophical outlook on the world. My philosophy has no need of a deity, and I have never been given an adequate reason to include one.

I'm an Agnostic on the brim of becoming an Atheist. It's not that big of an issue in my life, I've never really thought about religion until my friends started making a big deal of theirs. The only problem I've run into when it comes to my belief is that people try to convince me I'm wrong. They want me to give arguments. The thing is though, I don't really have any. The reason that god created them was because he thought it would make things simpler for us.But he later realized that it only confused us.When god sent jesus he was meant to bring down the other religions so all the christians could be together as one.But some people didn't want that.Read the bible for yourself,and don't rush through.I hope this helps

The most famous example I can think of is "Can god create a rock so heavy he cannot lift it?"
If he cannot, then there is a limitation to his power. If he can, then he cannot lift it and that is another limitation. Thus, God cannot be all powerful.

I'm sure that some of the stories from the Bible are based on real occurrences, but that doesn't mean you can jump to the conclusion of "There must be an all-powerful creator, an afterlife, and a magical sky kingdom."

For example, in Job chapter 26:7, written over 2,500 years ago, it speaks of an empty place to the north of earth. Empty as in no stars, no nothing. This is deep space, no way a human could see that far . With new technology, the Mt. Palomar observatory searched to investigate this claim. What they found was incredible!! A vast area of empty

Now the question, how could there be any reasonable answer as to how this could be known at that time other than by God, the creator of the universe? Wild guess? I don't believe in theism or any of the holy books. So I suppose I must be an atheist.
But I do believe there could be something out there, something that created us, but whether that creator is good bad or indifferent, or expects to be worshipped,there is no way for us to know. For all we know we could be part of a scientific experiment and our creator could be a scientist.
I don't find this idea any more far fetched than the god of the holy books iidea.

I meant that atheists can have very elaborate spirituality wich are not based on old dogma... Like buddhist believing in reincarnation or believing that universe will become god... Ad libitum... Often these spiritualities are richer because based on tangible reality...

As I am still a college student, when ever I talked about what I believed (Atheism), I was hated by all my classmated save for my very best freinds, they just showed respect.
I have alot of reasons for being an atheist, such as this one:
Whilst I am compleatly open to the idea of religion, and am not an atheist becouse I dont personaly like religion, all the reasons for theism I was given I was able to challenge them, so much so that the person simply didnt use it anymore -ever.

BTW: I am still only 14, but I do know what I am talking about, I was also raised to have God at the back of my head, never went to mass but my adoption mother is very theistic.
I would be a theist if I was given good reason for such an idea, a code of behaviour I have always held for everything.
I would challenge anything and everything, since if somethings true then its truthfullness should shine through so obviously, right?

Clutch, your position is very pragmatic, and I can relate. I was an Atheist until the age of 24. I changed that position while studying Engineering, of all things. The more I learned about the physical universe, the less Atheism made sense to me. Right now it's "hip" to call yourself an Atheist, but If you stay objective, you'll probably reevaluate your current position someday.
Whatever philosophy you follow, I hope it brings you peace.

Haha! Here none of my friends care what I think about religion. In high school I was demonised and hated for what I thought.
Not exactly a popular position for me to hold...
I'm usually reevaluating my ideas, about everything. Whenever I learn something new it changes how I think in some way. I don't view it as something that will happen once in the future. It's a gradual, continual process that's been happening for years and will continue to happen long into the future.

If our self awareness is due to our nervous systems, and our nervous systems are due to our genetics, then why do we have identical twins which have different self-awarenesses. What I mean is, why is an identical twin self-aware of his body rather than his brother's? They both have the same genetic makeup.

Didn't get it? think about it. Millions of bodies were born and died non of which I was self aware but BOOM my body was born and I was self aware of it. BUT it was possible for a body which has exactly the same genetic makeup as mine to be born which I wouldn't be self aware off, it was possible that I wouldn't be self-aware of my body, identical twins are proof, but I am, why?

@ItsameAlex If you want to know what caused humans to be self-aware I'd suggest reading up on published, peer-reviewed scientific writings on the subject. Neurology would be your best bet. Neither philosophy, me or the YouTube comment section are going to give you well-founded or respectable answers to that.
It's a complex scientific issue. You need a PhD for that stuff. If you want to be taken seriously, anyway.
So I would heavily recommend asking someone who could give an answer worth a damn.

Simple, really. Self-awareness most probably involves brain function. My hypothetical twin's brain may be genetically identical, but has no attachment to me whatsoever. The only brain that influences my biology, my body, is my own, so it's the only one I'm going to be self-aware of.
Neither my body nor DNA have a sort of genetic memory that links me to my twin.

The only way what you're arguing holds is if self-awareness is some ethereal thing planted in us. That would be the only way it could get mixed up or 'confused'.
Identical genetic make-up is really a non-issue. Both bodies are still different. They're both individual bodies, even if they're exactly the same.
The only thing that matters is that your body/brain is individual. Which it is. Identical twin or not. It's your brain, not your twin's. So it will only make you aware, and only of yourself.

But if i we're to say that i used to be a christian, and after doing research I am now Atheist, I am sure that most believers would jump on me and ask what kind of research i did.
So I just asked a question. To me it seems that learning about the physical universe, would push you farther and farther away from being a believer.
And I am not at all surprised by the reply you gave me, I expect about the same, from all Christians, or whatever you happen to be.

"Basically inferred", "implied" . . use those terms make it obvious you're looking for conflict where none should exist.
Clutchology is intelligent and articulate, but also young. He has decades of experiences ahead of him. "Reevaluate" does not mean "arrive at the same conclusions I did." It means to "reconsider ones position in light of changing circumstances." (i.e. life experiences.)
Re-read my post. I wished him the best regardless of what he believes in the end.

i understand atheist... i believe in god... but it is REALLY hard sumtimes to try not to wonder how stupid sum things in the bible sound like he created the world in 7 days or moses talked to a burning bush or that moses went up in the mountains for 40 days just to get sum bricks from god that had 12 commandments it's just hard to understand but in a way believing in god keeps society together and in control so i guess i'll just go along with it

Simple, as an atheïst i recognize my nature, and can therefor think about it better first i.o. going over to immediate action.
The centre of the brain gives us a good feeling when winning or being recognized.
Think of sports, games, a better job...
The democracy of the world would surely choose to put all that energy of wanting to win into a future for everybody, and for the individual.
