My guess? The deck is filled with 9s of Spades and one King of Diamonds. He starts with the King on the bottom, then, obviously, Span picks a 9. Cuddyer can then be seen picking a card from the middle to put it in the box (and not the King). So, a 9 is in the box when Cuddyer "searches" for Span's card. He gets it, then by slight of hand puts the King into Span's grip. The rest is just the result of the previous movements... Jus' an uneducated guess, however. Anyone know for sure?
